MARKING THE FUCK OUT

Since we do have a MOTY thread, and we occasionally have Favorite Wrestler or something discussions, I think we should have a thread devoted to our favorite matches or segments. If possible, link to a video and explain why this is one of your favorites. Some of them will be obvious, some won't be as obvious.

Wrestlemania 23: Ric Flair and Carlito def. Gregory Helms and Chavo Guerrero

This one was the dark match to WM23, included only so Ric Flair could have a match that night. This was also the first wrestling match I've ever seen in person, and what better ending to the first match than a victory by Naitch, right? Going into this, there was three guys I wanted to see wrestle: Undertaker, HBK, and Flair. This match was a total surprise, in an awesome way. WOOOOOO.

Wrestlemania 23: Undertaker def. Batista - World Heavyweight Championship

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2...lemania_extreme

Supposedly, Taker and Big Dave were a little peeved that they weren't closing the show, so they went out and had a kick-rear end match. The first video is Taker's entrance, and the second is the match. This was memorable for having me mark out for Undertaker in person, and for the dueling Taker/Batista signs in the crowd. Also, no one could command a giant stadium quite like the Undertaker, for obvious reasons.

Shawn Michaels returns to Raw in 2007

I'm at a college on the western side of Michigan, with Grand Rapids being the closest big city. In the fall of 2007, Raw was coming to town, and I was offered a chance to go. I declined using this logic: out of my favorite wrestlers, most of them were on Smackdown, and the only Raw guy, Shawn Michaels (my all-time favorite) was supposedly thinking about retirement. So, I didn't want to spend most of what little money I had to not see Shawn Michaels or anything. Naturally, this happens.

I was alternating between excitement and kicking myself for screwing that up during that Monday night.

One Night Stand 2006: RVD def. John Cena - WWE Championship

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xm...mpionship_sport

You know how some sports events are significantly more exciting because of the setting? Hockey games are just better at Yost or the Joe, or on Hockey Night In Canada. Big baseball games are better in the old ballparks when they're loud. Lambeau Field makes any Packers home game enjoyable to watch. For wrestling, you've gotta put Hammerstein Ballroom as the equivalent. This is one of cooler matches for the ECW home-ring advantage, the crowd being into the whole match, and the post-match celebration.

Stone Cold Steve Austin Drives A Zamboni

Everyone always assumes that Detroit's finest wrestling moment was Hogan bodyslaming Andre at Wrestlemania 3. However, that wasn't unique to Detroit at all. This though...at the Joe, at the heart of Hockeytown, is something completely unique to Detroit. Go Red Wings.

Quite possibly the greatest match of all-time. We've all seen it, but go see it again. The five parts includes the full promo package and entrances. It's worth it.

I love this match. It and Punk/Aries (DBDIII) are my personal favorites from ROH.

As far as ROH street fights go, I really liked the ROH v CZW matches, both the street fight at The 100th Show and the Cage of Death match at Death Before Dishonor IV. That Better Than Our Best street fight was drat awesome, too. Outside of gems like Punk v Joe and Aries v Danielson 2/3 falls, which I recognize as probably being better matches, I personally really liked Danielson and Nigel at Unified. The hardway on the ringpost still makes my forehead hurt just thinking about it. I also recall having a really good time with my friends watching Joe v Daniels v Styles on PPV at Unbreakable back in '05. Jesus Christ, that was good too.

My favorite matches I've seen live was probably KENTA v Misawa, and RVD v John Cena at ONS 2, just for the personal experience those matches entailed. I live on an island in the middle of nowhere and seeing wrestling involves extensive travel, so I was rather under-prepared and overwhelmed, especially by those matches and the accompanying atmosphere.

...and the RKO his message.

I have several that come to mind:

The Rock vs Triple H, Backlash 2000
I had just started watching wrestling around then and, after watching Rock get his rear end kicked by Trips and the McMahon-Helmsley Facgime week after week, I marked out so hard to see Austin come to save Rocky and seeing Rock finally win the belt off Hunter (even if it was only for a month).

The Rock vs Big Show, Raw 2000
This was the one where if Rock won he'd get a title shot at WM 2000 but if he lost he'd retire. This literally had me on tenterhooks because I hated Trips and the Facgime so much at that time (in hindsight, I know that means they did their jobs incredibly well) and Rock was the only one standing up to them. And seeing Vince return to help Rock (even though I was half-expecting Vince to betray him later) made me mark out.

Mariko Yoshida vs Aja Kong, Tournament ZION 1999
I've been trying to find good women's wrestling matches on Youtube and stumbled upon this one just last night. This has been one of the best ones I've found so far but if anyone has recommendations of others I might watch feel free to make them.

John Cena vs Triple H vs Randy Orton, WM 24
A lot of folks may criticize me for this one but I personally enjoyed this one simply because Randy looked dominate here and won when the buildup to the match itself was simply that he didn't have a chance of winning.

Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels, WM 24
I probably don't need to explain this one; good yet heartbreaking at the same time. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Watching this on Youtube right now; good so far (good enough for my women's wrestling playlist) but I compare this to Mickie's matches now and all I can think of is how the "mighty" have fallen.

EDIT: Finished watching. Definitely impressive but I guess 3 years of trying to carry crap divas through a match took its toll on Mickie's abilities. And there was actually a story behind it which is nonexistent in today's Divas division.

Dynamite Kid vs Rollerball Rocco - World of Sport 1982

The first match I ever remember specifically watching as a kid was Tom "Dynamite Kid" Billington vs Mark "Rollerball" Rocco back in 1982. I've since gone back and watched and I still enjoy it. Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit - Royal Rumble 2003
I've waxed lyrical about this match many times, but suffice it to say that Angle and Benoit were essentially placeholders leading in to Brock Lesnar's crowning at Wrestlemania, and just like Benoit and Malenko once did in WCW, they just went out and put on an amazing loving match that blew EVERYTHING out of the water. The storyline was a simple one - each guy thinks they are better than the other - but being Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit, it really lent the whole thing an air of authenticity. These guys legitimately were the two most impressive wrestlers in WWE, and the only downside to it was that one of them had to lose.

The match was so good that after it was over, the crowd stood up and gave the LOSER a standing ovation as he stood in the middle of the ring almost crying. Simply incredible.

This is one of the matches that I play for anyone who doesn't like wrestling. It never fails to get people to mark out like a ten year old, especially when that sick release german Benoit throws in hits.

It is eerie to hear Cole talk about Benoit sacrificing his family and himself in the opening minutes of the match, though.

An awesome, awesome match. Great storytelling that really sells the whole dynamic of the viscious, evil heels and the faces valiantly fighting through, relying on their scrappiness and determination despite being overmatched (due to Watanabe's injured shoulder and again when  Watanabe escapes, leaving Ito to fight both members of LCO ). The way the match builds up to the ending is fantastic and then the ending itself is absolutely amazing featuring a ridiculously awesome spot and one of the scariest bumps I've ever seen.

I might be in the minority but in all the TLC matches it always felt like the Dudley Boys were more of a hindrance that Edge and Christian and the Hardy Boyz had to work around to get a great match. I swear the Dudley's spent most of those matches just blatantly setting up spots or laying flat on their backs.

My favorite match was the 1992 Royal Rumble match it wasn't the best Rumble but Ric Flair, Bobby Heenan, and Piper (who I was originally rooting for) were just on fire. They work the Mark Henry role, someone's gotta be on the receiving end of those bumps. D-Von also performed a sick (albeit missed) diving headbutt through a table off a ladder in this match.

I'd be here all day listing ROH/Danielson matches, so I'll go with 5 ROH matches, not listing the same wrestler twice.

1) Bryan Danielson v Nigel McGuinness - Unified - not their most technically sound bout by any stretch but it is the only time I have ever gotten chills watching a wrestling match. After the ringpost spot when a bloodied Nigel gets SO fired up in the ring, the top of my head gets tingly.

2) Kevin Steen & El Generico (Steenerico) v BxB Hulk & Shingo Takagi (New Hazard) - Supercard of Honor III - This match is something that I would show to someone who had never seen an ROH match before. It embodies what ROH is all about, and is an absolute blast to watch.

3) Samoa Joe v Kenta Kobashi - Joe/Kobashi - The crowd takes this match to another level. ROH's hottest crowd ever aside from Cage of Death. Stiffness. Chops. Head drops. My favorite part of the entire match is the very beginning where Joe pushes Kobashi against the ropes and slaps him right in the face. The crowd reaction and Kobashi's reaction were both priceless.

4) Austin Aries v CM Punk - Death Before Dishonor III - Amazing, amazing match. Again the crowd here is so great. And the aftermath is one of the greatest moments in ROH history.

5) AJ Styles v Paul London v Low Ki - One Year Anniversary Show - I just saw this recently and was blown away. Great action from bell to bell. Low Ki was SO good and over back then. London was insanely over as well. Great match.

Danielson/Strong - Vendetta and tons of others deserve a spot as well but I'm done for now.

My favorite matches were always cruiserweight and non main event matches from WCW involving Guerrero, Malenko, Benoit, Jericho, Saturn and the rest of the real talent in WCW. What I really enjoyed were true tag team matches between guys that actually worked together well.

One in particular that stands out:

Benoit & Malenko face Raven & Saturn

madam, your hydraulic pressure is atrocious!

Taz vs. Bam Bam Bigelow Living Dangerously 3/1/98

Taz is living proof that the monster formula can work on just about anyone as long is it looks credible. It's fairly simple: bring in a guy the size of a bus, have him destroy anything in his way, no-sell anything, and present him as an unstoppable force that no one can overcome, up until someone does. Undertaker, Kane, Andre, Lesnar, Goldberg, etc. It's a formula that's been around as long as wrestling itself.

Taz is not as tall or as big as those guys. He's short and stout, with tree-trunk legs. What he lacks in physical size he makes up in strength, and what he might lack in strength he makes up in attitude. A guy no-selling a powerbomb normally looks bad for everyone involved. Taz taking a powerbomb, no-selling it as he pops up, and flipping off his opponent as he clotheslines them works. The fans buy it, and that's all that matters.

Bam Bam Bigelow is the perfect opponent for Taz. He has years of credibility from his time in WWF and Japan. He's always been booked as a monster due to his size, continuing in ECW where he's easily the largest non-joke wrestler on the roster and launches smaller foes into the crowd. At the same time, Bam Bam also has surprising grace ad agility, which is important here. The monster booking is helped immensely by the flames tattooed on his head, which immediately make him stand out. It's one thing to be a big, toothy bald bastard. It's another thing to be those with loving flames tattooed on your head. No one else had a look like that, and it might be the smartest thing Scott Bigelow ever did.

More importantly, he was a big guy who was capable of bumping. Vader might have been a better big-man overall, but Vader couldn't bump like Bam Bam. What it did is it helped both men. Bam Bam could beat down Taz due to his superior size. Taz could take the punishment, the idea of the bully meeting someone who could stand up to him, yet he could throw around the larger Bigelow with suplexes, which added to his reputation of being a strong son of a bitch.

I argue this is the best match of Taz's career. Bam Bam controls the pace, and due to the ending bump a majority of the match takes place around the ringside area. Bigelow puts Taz through a table, almost airmails a moonsault, and generally imposes his will on Taz. Bam Bam has good enough timing on when to let Taz get in a hope spot, hitting a clothesline, or an impressive feat oopf strength where Taz deadlifted Bam Bam from a standing position, bending backwards to a near 90-degree angle before dropping Bigelow.

Much is made of the final bump and it's the one that ends up on all the highlight reels, yet Taz T-Boning Bam Bam off the entrance ramp is one of the nastiest ones you'll see. A guy of Bam Bam's size taking that hard a fall, while Taz cracks the back of his head on the guardrail. It's completely ridiculous, yet underscored by what came later on, a problem that plauged ECW.

The ending bump is what the match is known for. Taz is on Bam Bam's back with the Tazmission, and in order to escape the hold Bam Bam jumps backwards and drives Taz and himself through the ring. The pop is one of compete shock. Bam Bam is the one who crawls out alive, throwing Taz out of the hole and pins him, proving that Taz and his submission hold aren't invincible, you just need to drat near kill them to win. Everyone looks better, and it makes people want more, which is the point of professional wrestling.

Samoa Joe vs. AJ Styles: Super X Cup Finals at TNA Sacrifice 2005

Some of the major spots are recreated from when AJ challenged Joe for the ROH World Title, but there was a certain atmosphere here that made this match special. Samoa Joe had just debuted in TNA 2 months prior and seeing him on a televised wrestling show was a real treat. He was unbeaten going into the PPV after destroying most of TNA's X-Division. The finals of an X-Division tournament saw him go against TNA's golden boy in AJ Styles with the winner getting a title shot at champion Christopher Daniels who plays a great heel while commentating on this match. Joe and AJ play their roles really well. This was pretty much the beginning of the Styles/Joe/Daniels feud that, if you ask me, was TNA's peak.

The commentary is still terrible though.

Thanks for the link to the KENTA vs. Low Ki match. I've heard about it around this forum, but never saw it until now. Awesome match. KENTA is pretty much a fighting game character. It was interesting seeing him act heelish during the beginning of the match. I've always seen things of him when he's the face. I also chuckled a bit at the fans imitating the "KENTA!" cry.

A certain smackdown no DQ match between Edge and Eddie Guererro, very fast paced, and a lot of nice ladder spots that could be forgiven for not making sense, (not being a ladder match and all), and a standing O for a defeated heel Eddie. Heel Eddie before he was super-over, too.

It doesn't matter how much somebody hates John Cena. If they can't respect what he did here then they don't understand jack about poo poo. I cheered my rear end off for him that night and I never really was a fan before.

Worst goon in the universe.

Danielson vs London at ROH: Epic Encounter

The best ROH match I have ever seen and definitely one of the best matches I can think of period.
