!~!~IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN PWG FANS~!~!

The Battle of Los Angeles is a yearly tournament held by Pro Wrestling Guerilla since 2005. Basically they just get a bunch of pretty awesome indy wrestlers and then they put them in a tournament, where the winner goes on to get a shot at the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Championship sometime after the Tournament.

HOWEVER This year will be different!

At Pro Wrestling Guerrillas "Guerre Sans Frontières" Chris Hero had lost the championship to a man who had already been (presumably) signed by the WWE:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA8pwJu3cQ0

Because of this, the winner of this years tournament WILL BECOME the PRO WRESTLING GUERRILLA CHAMPION~!

We have what SHOULD be only 16 participants this year. 16 have been announced.

If you would like some history on BOLA:

Past Winners:

2005:  Chris Bosh
2006:  Davey Richards
2007:  CIMA
2008:  Low Ki

I don't even know why I'm spoiler tagging those. Especially 2008.

You can check Wikipedia for the actual tournament details on what matches took place.

You can check out the Mini BOLA Site here: http://www.prowrestlingguerrilla.com/2009BOLA/

Kevin Steen

4th Battle of Los Angeles

From Marieville, Québec, Canada
Finishing Move: Package Piledriver
Height: 5'10
Weight: 219lbs
Age: 25
Wrestling Debut: 1999

Past Accomplishments:

PWG Champion (1 time)
PWG World Tag Team Champion (2 times) – with El Generico
ROH World Tag Team Champion (1 time) – with El Generico

Site Blurb: As a former World Champion and World Tag Team Champion, Kevin Steen's name will be forever etched in the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla history books. However, Steen will make his long-awaited return to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla in order to capture the one prize that has eluded him: the Battle of Los Angeles. The landscape has changed drastically since the last time Steen competed in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, but he is confident that the skills that brought him to the top already will be more than enough. But with the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship on the line at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, competition will be at an all time high. Kevin Steen may have to up his game, or risk facing a first round elimination.

Jerome "LTP" Robinson

1st Battle of Los Angeles

From Compton, CA
Finishing Move: Sky Twister Senton
Height: 5'5
Weight: 168lbs
Age: 24
Wrestling Debut: 2002(???)

Past Accomplishments:

None.

Site Blurb: Site Blurb: As part of the influx of new talent Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has seen in 2009, Jerome "LTP" Robinson had no trouble winning over the fans thanks to his high-flying wrestling style and charismatic demeanor, but getting a spot in the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles was a much different story. At "Against The Grain", LTP had to beat out three other men in a 2009 Battle of Los Angeles Qualifier 4-way match, which was undoubtedly the toughest test of his Pro Wrestling Guerrilla career. But with his entry into the tournament secure, LTP intends on making his mark on the wrestling world at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla's biggest event of the year.

Brandon Gatson

1st Battle of Los Angeles

From Austin, TX
Finishing Moves: 450 Splash/Sasuke Special
Height: 6'0
Weight: 200lbs
Age: 25
Debut: 2000

Past Accomplishments:

None.

Site Blurb: After facing what was the biggest challenge of his Pro Wrestling Guerrilla career at "Against The Grain", Brandon Gatson heads into the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles for what will be the biggest challenge of his professional wrestling career thus far. While fans were impressed with his deceptive agility before the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles Qualifier 4-Way match, Gatson proved he is capable of much more by winning the Qualifier in convincing fashion. With the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship on the line at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, Gatson could be just four matches away from being a well-respected local competitor to a worldwide professional wrestling phenomenon.

Scott Lost

4th Battle of Los Angeles

From San Diego, CA
Finishing Moves: The Big Fat Kill/Sharpshooter
Height: 5'9
Weight: 205lbs
Age: 29
Debut: 2001

Past Accomplishments:

PWG World Tag Team Championship (5 times) - with Joey Ryan (3) & Chris Bosh (2)

Site Blurb: Having defeated three former Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World champions in recent months, Scott Lost is experiencing a groundswell of fan support heading in to the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles. With the opportunity at hand to win not only the tournament but the title as well, Scott must be careful not to get too caught up in the fans' reactions. Too much cockiness could cost Scott this opportunity at the singles glory that has eluded him for so long. However, the right amount of confidence could lead to Scott running away with the entire tournament. Will the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles usher in the Scott Lost Era of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla?

Brian Kendrick

1st Battle of Los Angeles

From Venice, CA
Finishing Move: Sliced Bread Number 2
Height: 5'8
Weight: 185lbs
Age: 30
Debut: 1999

Past Accomplishments:

World Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with Paul London
WWE Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with Paul London

Site Blurb: Unlike the other first-time tournament entrants in the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, Brian Kendrick has already proven to the professional wrestling world that he is a top tier competitor. However, much like the other first-time entrants, Brian Kendrick still has a lot to prove to the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla fans. Since joining the roster in August, his win-loss record stands at 1-2, which is not exactly "top tier." Winning the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles would not only add four pluses to the win column for Kendrick, it would also earn him the top prize in the company: The Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship. Brian Kendrick is certainly capable of it, but will he be able to put his ego aside and focus on winning the tournament?

Chris Sabin

2nd Battle of Los Angeles

From Detroit, MI
Finishing Move: Cradle Shock
Height: 5'10
Weight: 205lbs
Age: 27
Debut: 2000

Past Accomplishments:

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with Alex Shelley
TNA X Division Championship (4 times)

Site Blurb: Since his return to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla earlier this year, Chris Sabin has only competed in one singles match, a tough loss to the most recent Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion, Bryan Danielson. Though he injured his ankle in the match against Danielson, Sabin says that is no excuse. "The level of competition in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla since my last singles match here [in early 2007] has increased tremendously, and I just wasn't ready for it." Sabin remarked. While he won't be able to avenge his loss to Danielson, Chris Sabin says he's now ready to prove that he is one of the top professional wrestlers in the world, and he will do so by winning the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles.

Matt Jackson

1st Battle of Los Angeles

From Hesperia, CA
Finishing Move: More Bang For Your Buck
Height: 5'10
Weight: 172lbs
Age: 24
Debut: 2004

Past Accomplishments:

PWG World Tag Team Championship (1 time, Current)

Site Blurb: Recently, The Young Bucks became the longest reigning Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Tag Team Champions ever, which is impressive on its own, but combine it with winning DDT4 earlier this year, and it puts the Jackson brothers at the top of the list of greatest tag teams in company history. With their names indelibly written in the record books, the Bucks approach the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles with the intention of performing a feat that most likely could never be duplicated: a reigning Tag Team Champion winning DDT4, the Battle of Los Angeles, and the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship all in the same year. While Nick has more singles experieince in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Matt is certainly capable of winning the tournament, as well. History will be made at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles; whether The Young Bucks make it remains to be seen.

Roderick Strong

4th Battle of Los Angeles

From Tampa, FL
Finishing Move: Gibson Driver
Height: 5'10
Weight: 212lbs
Age: 26
Debut: 2000

Past Accomplishments:

PWG World Tag Team Championship (3 times) – with Davey Richards (1), PAC (1) & Jack Evans (1)
ROH World Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with Austin Aries

Site Blurb: Since joining Pro Wrestling Guerrilla in 2005, Roderick Strong has been entrenched very near the top of singles scene, but he has never been able to take that final step. Yes, Strong has been a multiple time Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Tag Team Champion, and he is the only man to have won the DDT4 tournament twice, but the World Championship has always eluded him. Even the Battle of Los Angeles has proven troublesome for Strong, who reached the semi-finals in 2006 and the tournament finals in 2007, but has never been able to win the entire tournament. At the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, Strong is potentially four matches away from winning the title and the tournament in one fell swoop. The final step to the top may be the biggest of Roderick Strong's career; will he be able to take it?

Human Torando

2nd Battle of Los Angeles

From Hollywood, AL
Finishing Move: DND (Dat Nigga Dead)
Height: 6'3
Weight: 171lbs
Age: 26
Debut: 2003

Past Accomplishments:

PWG World Championship (2 times)
PWG Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with El Generico

Site Blurb: After losing the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship in mid-2008, Human Torando has struggled to get his singles career back on track, and the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles may be just the opportunity he needs. Sidelined for nearly 8 months with a knee injury after losing the World Championship, Tornado returned to wrestling intent on working his way back to the top, rebuilding some bridges along the way. With many of his fractured relationships now repaired, Human Torando plans on returning to his winning ways at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, where if successful, he could become the first ever three time Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion.

Joey Ryan

4th Battle of Los Angeles

From Los Angeles, CA
Finishing Move: Mustache Ride
Height: 5'10
Weight: 210lbs
Age: 30
Debut: 2000

Past Accomplishments:

PWG Championship/PWG World Championship (1 time)
PWG Tag Team Championship/PWG World Tag Team Championship (3 times) – with Scott Lost

Site Blurb: Earlier this year, Joey Ryan held distinction of being the longest reigning Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion, not an easy record to set, and an even tougher one to break. However, despite Joey's best attempts he could not prevent Chris Hero from breaking the record. With the World Championship now vanact, Joey Ryan sees the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles as a way to not only reclaim the title, but also as the first step on his path to breaking Hero's record. Already looking ahead fourteen months, Joey is confident that in January, 2011 he will once again be celebrated as the longest reigning World Champion. Maybe so, but Joey Ryan need not forget that at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, there will be fifteen other men gunning for the World Championship, looking to set records of their own.

Colt Cabana

2nd Battle of Los Angeles

From Chicago, IL
Finishing Moves: Colt 45/Billy Goats Curse
Height: 6'1
Weight: 245
Age: 29
Debut: 1999

Past Accomplishments:

ROH Tag Team Championship (2 times) – with CM Punk

Site Blurb: As the lines that define his career become more and more blurred, Colt Cabana plans on making a major statement at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles. "Fire and foremost, I am a Professional Wrestler, and a adamn good one at that." And what better way to make such a statement than by winning not only the tournament, but the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship title, too? Sure, you can finding Cabana performing at comedy clubs around the country, but he insists that his heart belongs inside of the ring. At the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, Colt Cabana intends on proving that despite outward appearances, professional wrestling is his job, comedian is just his hobby.

Austin Aries

4th Battle of Los Angeles

From Savage, MN
Finishing Moves: Last Chancery/450 Splash/Brainbuster
Height: 5'7
Weight: 210
Age: 31
Debut: 2000

Past Accomplishments:

ROH World Championship (2 times, current)
ROH World Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with Roderick Strong

Site Blurb: Few, if any at all, expected to see Austin Aries as an entrant in the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, but now that he has been announced, he poses a very real threat to all other competitors. Aries has found little success in his three previous Battle of Los Angeles outings, but swears that 2009 will be the year of A-Double. Aries is as physically gifted as he is cunning, so it is likely that he will bend every rule in the book (and break a few, too) in order to win. With the tournament and title at stake this year, Austin Aries will undoubtedly be in top gear at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, and he is confident that there are few, if any at all, that can keep up with him.

El Generico

5th Battle of Los Angeles

From Tijuana, Mexico
Finishing Move: Brainbustaaahhh!!!
Height: 5'11
Weight: 180lbs
Age: 24
Debut: 2002

Past Accomplishments:

PWG World Championship (1 time)
PWG World Tag Team Championship (4 times) – with Human Tornado (1), Quicksilver (1) and Kevin Steen (2)
ROH World Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with Kevin Steen

Site Blurb: Not long ago, El Generico dreamt of helping the downtrodden denizens of his hometown by establishing an orphanage. Los Angelitos de El Generico, in Tijuana, Mexico. However, when Generico lost the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship, the funding for this great work of community service dried up, and so did the hopes and dreams of his niños. But all is not lost for his "little angels;" with the title and the tournament on the line at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, Generico would be entitled to a sizable bonus that would go a long way toward reestablishing his facility. Since he has participated in each previous Battle of Los Angeles, El Generico knows the challenges he will face. But are his opponents prepared to face the wrath of a man fighting for the future of his community?

Kenny Omega

2nd Battle of Los Angeles

From Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada
Finishing Moves: Hadouken/Croyt's Wrath
Height: 5'11
Weight: 206lbs
Age: 25 (26?)
Debut: 2000

Past Accomplishments:

KO-D Tag Team Championship (1 time) – with Kota Ibushi[

Site Blurb: In the one year since Kenny Omega debuted in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, he and Chuck Taylor have climbed very near to the top of the tag team division, but by concentrating his efforts there, individual recognition has eluded him. Though his singles record is spotted at best, Kenny Omega sees the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles as an opportunity to gain that recognition, and so much more. Without Chuck Taylor to watch his back, Kenny Omega faces the field of competitors alone at the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, though he will have a growing legion of fans for support. Will that be enough for Kenny Omega to become World Champion, or will his second tournament appearance end just like his first?

Alex Shelley

2nd Battle of Los Angeles

From Detroit MI
Finishing Move: Sliced Bread #2/Shellshock/Border City Stretch
Height: 5'10
Weight: 199lbs
Age: 26
Debut: 2002

Past Accomplishments:

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship (1 time)
TNA X Division Championship (1 time)

Site Blurb: As the sixteenth and final participant in the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles, Alex Shelley returns to the tournament intent on improving upon his first appearance in 2007. Announced as a last minute addition to the 2007 Battle of Los Angeles, Shelley managed to make his way to the Semi-Final Round, where he was defeated by Roderick Strong. While progressing as far as he did is nothing to scoff at, this year Shelley's potential opponents will have plenty of time to prepare in advance. Without the element of surprise, Alex Shelley will be forced to call upon every shred of his ability in order to win the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles. Will it be enough?

Johnny Goodtime

1st Battle of Los Angeles

From Scranton, PA
Finishing Move: ???
Height: 5'11
Weight: 188lbs
Age: 28
Debut: ???

Past Accomplishments:

None.

Site Blurb: With Chris Sabin injured and unable to compete in the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles just days before the tournament, Johnny Goodtime is being given the opportunity of a lifetime. Thanks to his performance in recent months, most notably in the 2009 Battle of Los Angeles Qualifier at Against the Grain, Goodtime will now step in to the D Block and take on Roderick Strong in the opening round. While a lot of pressure is on Johnny Goodtime heading in to the tournament, there may be even more pressure on his opponents. Roderick Strong has been preparing for weeks for his first round match with Chris Sabin, and now he has less than 24 hours to formulate a new gameplan. Johnny Goodtime has pluck, moxy, grit and the element of surprise in his corner. Will that be enough for him to win both the title and the tournament?

I've always been a fan of Lost. Seemed to me like he was the best worker in Dynasty, but got swallowed up around a time that Ryan was either champion or doing his 70s thing and Chris Bosh was...being himself.

I'm glad they've been putting points into his stock as of late, but I don't know if he's due a win. I'd love for him to do it, though. Had to vote Kenny Omega.

LTP is goddamn great.

THAT match, to me, is what indy wrestling is missing. Just unknown hungry wrestlers straight up rocking it in an opener. gently caress this "oh, but it was a spotfest..." poo poo... THAT goddamn ruled. Fans were going insane for that. So many markout moments in that match. About as much fun as I've had watching a six man of unknowns since the SATs and Red vs. Divine Storm XL CZW match in 2001.

Brandon Gatson is loving incredible - CURSEWORTHY even. That Muto elbow he did blew my tiny little mind... and then the dive sequence later - like holy poo poo!!! I'm now a big fan of every guy in that match, especially Gatson and LTP who is just LOADED with charisma and is like Koko B. Ware meets Ruckus with a couple of cans of Red Bull thrown in, dude is ALL energy.

Love it love it LOOOOOVE IT!!!!

Hero Chris posted:

Just watched the opening 6 man match. And loving A was it crazy!!! he was like a real life wrestling version of NFL Blitz. There were bodies flying everywhere and just so many moves that went down, too hard to try and tell them all. Call it a spotfest or whatever, I loved every second of it. Fanfuckingtastic opener.

Tim Sanchez posted:

Gatson totally stole that match.
I still am not nearly as high about LTP as everyone else seems to be.

That opening 6-man was supposed to be a regular tag.
But PWG was running even later than usual with the gigantic turnout.

It got turned into that crazy 6 man to save time, I assume.
Like 30 seconds in just BOOM, crazy dive that immediately gets the crowd into it and forgets about how crowded it is and how long they had to wait. After that is was all loving awesome. Great show.

PCN_Thomas posted:

I didn't see the big deal about Gatson. He's got an awesome spot, but I thought the rest of his stuff looked ehh.

But, LTP did rule. He's a little ball of charisma and energy and all of his stuff looked great. I thought everyone but Gatson looked awesome. Not saying Gatson looked awful, but I didn't see why everyone's all about him, other than his handspring getting good air.

I hope people don't sleep on Goodtime either; he was probably the tamest in the match, in terms of cool spots, but I thought he looked great too.

Andrew_Barrett posted:

6 man was so loving sick. Brandon Gatson is a beast. Being a gymnast makes all the difference, as average flippy moves you see from others look 5000x better by him. Hope he gets some charisma behind him, because he could be the next big thing for PWG. I can't believe the match I want to see most on the 9/4 show is the opening 9 man, not Shingo/Generico!

You just mad at Naylor & Alan from that one time you listened to Dr. Keith and you thought he was boring.

A Psycho Driver for Charlie Rose? Awesome.

I'm gonna go ahead and say, though, that Super Dragon didn't really get good until he started gaining weight.

edit: voted Human Tornado.

No, Naylor just has really weird tastes. In 2007 he declared Mark Briscoe vs Kevin Steen from A Fight at the Roxbury to be one of his MOTYs.

Alan is the happiest loving guy to ever watch wrestling. He loves everything. It's awesome.

I voted Roddy to go all the way.

The God Damned Human Tornado is better than everyone else, and why has he not been given a shot out of the indy scene by TNA or WWE yet? <>

He is almost as injury prone as Nigel was, so theres no way WWE would sign him. TNA are missing out though, he would be a great fit in the X-Division. Plus Russo would love writing for him.

Didn't he have like 0 injuries in his entire career until last year? He just had 1 really bad injury.

I thought it was the case that he kept on getting injured whenever the focus was placed on him. I do know that that injury just after he won the PWG title cost him a dark match on a TNA taping.
