I think one of the cats brought this bird into our house. I just found it in the hallway, and to be honest, I never thought that our cats were smart enough to catch a bird (plus they have bells on their collars), so I am wondering if the bird was already injured. Another possibility is it flew into the house as I did have the door open today, but I am sure I would have seen it earlier. It is still moving, but it wont get up, its just laying there, it moves one of its legs, but not the other. A friend said to put it under a lightbulb and a towel in a box, so that's what we did. Here is a picture. What do I do?

If you don't live in Australia, that is someone's pet budgie If your cat got to him, he is probably not going to make it, cat saliva/claws carry bacteria that is very harmful to birds. As it is likely a pet bird, you need to locate and take it to an avian vet as soon as possible if you intend to try to save it. If you do live in Australia and it is a wild budgie, find a local wildlife rescue and contact them. He sounds like he is in bad shape, you really need to get him to a vet as soon as tomorrow

Yeah I keep looking all around but there is no one open right now. He is moving around a lot, just not on his leg, so I dunno if that is a good sign? He doesn't look like he has any broken skin anywhere, and none of his fur looks like its wet/matted from cat saliva. I know I had just put my son to bed not even an hour before and I would have seen it then. I've seen what my cat's do to their toys, and he looks like he is in great shape compared to the cat toys, so perhaps he must have nipped the cat on the nose or something. I really dunno. We live in the US, so I guess it's someone's pet, but my husband isn't so sure because it's wings are not clipped. We found a bird rescue place we can take it tomorrow so we just have to make sure he lives through the night. Rathina fucked around with this message at Nov 03, 2009 around 06:46 |

That is super heartbreaking, I was expecting some bird like a sparrow but no its a BUDGIE, A PET BIRD. I want to hug the little thing The towel in a box seems like sound advice, keep it quiet, warm and dark. Hope the cat didn't injure it, keep us updated tomorrow!

If you don't mind my asking, which state do you live in? Most states require pet birds to have leg bands. Does this one have one? Yeah, his wings are not clipped at all, but some pet owners leave them flighted. Also, even if he was clipped, depending on how long he has been out of captivity, the feathers would grow back (my budgie needs a new trimming of the flight feathers every month or 2). The bird rescue is nice, but they might not take him in because he is a non-indigenous species. You can find a small list of avian vets here: http://www.birdsnways.com/articles/abvpvets.htm If you don't find anything listed, call your nearest vet and ask for a referral. Please take care of the little guy, he is so cute

Oh god. I really hope he has a leg band or something.

No leg band was on him. Around midnight I was finally able to get a hold of a friend who cares for larger birds, and he felt comfortable taking care of it till we could get it to the bird rescue, sometime later this afternoon.

If you can get him to a vet ASAP. Even if you don't see skin broken, bacteria from the cat could have gotten into the birds system, which will generally cause them to die in 12-24 hours. Poor little dude

He's definitely someone's escaped (or turned loose) pet, since parakeets are not native to the US. And he looks like a baby-- see how the dark bars on his forehead go all the way down to his nostrils? That means he hasn't even gone through his first molt yet. Where are you located? PI might be able to recommend some good vets and/or rescues. If your cats touched the bird, he needs to see a vet and go on antibiotics. Doesn't have to have been a bite; just the saliva is enough to put him at risk of deadly infection. You can try posting on Craigslist and 911 Parrot Alert to find the parakeet's original owners... if he has any. The post could be as simple as "Found: young green & yellow (normal color) parakeet that flew into my house in (location) on (date). Contact (your number) or (rescue's name/number) to claim." Good luck, and please keep us updated on the little guy.

Yeah I was going to say that it is a baby and the coloration pattern is not of wild budgies, unless there is a feral flock where you are thats someones pet. Poor budgie. Wash the cat saliva off her with lukewarm water please its very toxic to birds. I hope you can take her to a vet or somewhere. Hope he's doing okay. My sister found a budgie flying around her boyfriend's barn five or so years ago. We took it in and placed an ad in the paper to find out a few weeks later that he had escaped from a small city half an hour away from where we found him. That little girl was so happy to get her buddy back. Our budgie was glad to have his cage to himself again.

To be honest, I would not be surprised to find out that your cats stole the bird from someone's house. Its rare to find bugies flying around the US, even when they are accidentally released, and even more rare that one would be caught by a cat with a bell.

Poor little fella ![]() I read a study that said 40-60% of birds die when they are bit by a cat, not from injuries but from bacteria in the cat's saliva. So if the cat punctured the bird's skin in any way and he didn't get antibiotics there's a good chance he will die even if he doesn't have severe external injuries.

This thread is too sad ![]() So here's a video of my very-much-alive budgie Peep attacking a pen. Hopefully it will cheer everyone up a bit after the sad budgie news.
