You wouldn't like me when I'm angry...

Memorial arson: Drunk out-of-towner sets fire to sacred WTC area

An arsonist set fire on Saturday to a chapel where the remains of unidentified victims of Sept. 11 are stored, city officials said.

None of the thousands of remains was damaged but virtually all the mementos - pictures, notes and flowers - left by loved ones at Memorial Park were either stolen or damaged in the fire, according to the mayor's office.

Firebug's a Harvard graduate: WTC chapel blaze spurs outrage

He's New York's newest Public Enemy No. 1 - and he has a Harvard law degree.

Outraged kin of 9/11 victims were reeling as Ivy Leaguer Brian Schroeder spent another night in jail on charges he set fire to a sacred chapel that holds the unidentified remains of those killed in the terror attacks.

Defense lawyer Gary Lesser said Schroeder was boozed up - and believes someone may have "put something in his drink."

Schroeder also had no idea what he was lighting on fire.

"He voluntarily went to the precinct the next day after he realized the gravity of what had happened," Lesser said.

Brian Schroeder, Ivy League grad accused of setting fire to a sacred 9/11 chapel, loses job offer

An Ivy League law grad told his mom he must have been out of his mind to spark a blaze at a sacred 9/11 chapel - and now he's out of a job, too.

White-shoe firm Sidley Austin yanked Brian Schroeder's employment offer Monday morning, firm partner Bill Conlon said.

Schroeder, a Harvard Law School grad, worked in the firm's New York office for part of the summer, Conlon confirmed.

Sidley Austin -- the nation's seventh largest law firm, according to The National Law Journal -- had five floors and some 600 employees in the north tower of the World Trade Center. One employee, switchboard operator Rosemary Smith, died in the attacks.

Schroeder's mom told the News on Monday her 26-year-old son doesn't remember how or why he committed the atrocious act.

"He doesn't really have any explanation or memory of what took place," Alice Schroeder said. "Now, he's just trying to minimize the damage to his career and make amends. You know, take responsibility and move on."

I don't know Brian, but he went to high school with a group of my friends, where he was valedictorian. He went to Duke for undergrad, then Harvard Law school, clearly he's always been very hardworking and ambitious and he's got to pretty smart. But apparently he blows off steam by getting trashed in NYC and setting fires. This is maybe the worst thing you could manage to get arrested for doing without physically hurting anybody. Everybody's pretty blown away by it.

People do stupid poo poo when they're drunk. Hell in high school my friends and I would drive around and throw beef at street signs for some reason. Couldn't even tell you why but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Maybe he did it to protest the positive remembrance of the technocrats of imperialism.

Ward Churchill posted:

As for those in the World Trade Center... Well, really, let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break. They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of America's global financial empire - the "mighty engine of profit" to which the military dimension of U.S. policy has always been enslaved - and they did so both willingly and knowingly. Recourse to "ignorance" - a derivative, after all, of the word "ignore" - counts as less than an excuse among this relatively well-educated elite. To the extent that any of them were unaware of the costs and consequences to others of what they were involved in - and in many cases excelling at - it was because of their absolute refusal to see. More likely, it was because they were too busy braying, incessantly and self-importantly, into their cell phones, arranging power lunches and stock transactions, each of which translated, conveniently out of sight, mind and smelling distance, into the starved and rotting flesh of infants. If there was a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers, I'd really be interested in hearing about it.

He doesn't remember how or why, but he knows he did it? Curious. Of course, I've never been 'blacked-out-and-set-fire-to-a-memorial' smashed, so I don't know how blacked out memory works.

It would be pretty ironic if he was pretty straight edge until that one night. "I'll go out drinking. Just this once. Nothing career-ending could possibly happen."

That's a fairly sad story. Why is it always the grade-A kids who do horrible things? We're not surprised when a natural moron does something stupid, but this kid was a Harvard grad that was going places.

Then he decided to become a terrorist.

Idiotic? Sure, I'll give you that.

Horrible? He didn't really harm anybody or do much damage beyond property damage.

Offensive? Not any more so than burning down any other building. He didn't do it because of his hate for a religion.

The people mostly offended by it are going to be the people who are already on soapboxes bitching about any little thing that seems to take away from the memory of 9/11.

We only know he was Ivy League. His family could be super-rich, but they might just be kind-of-rich. They'd have to be at least very-rich to buy him out of almost drunkenly burning down a 9/11 memorial.

I find burning down a chapel that happens to house remains of people who died in 9/11 no more offensive than burning down any other chapel. Yes.

And when it comes to burning down chapels, I don't find that particularly offensive either. In bad taste? Insensitive to the burial practices of others? Unproductive use of time? Sure.

Does it make me want to stand up, get angry, sue or assault somebody? Nope not one bit.
