"nydailynews.com posted:Memorial arson: Drunk out-of-towner sets fire to sacred WTC area ![]() I don't know Brian, but he went to high school with a group of my friends, where he was valedictorian. He went to Duke for undergrad, then Harvard Law school, clearly he's always been very hardworking and ambitious and he's got to pretty smart. But apparently he blows off steam by getting trashed in NYC and setting fires. This is maybe the worst thing you could manage to get arrested for doing without physically hurting anybody. Everybody's pretty blown away by it.

People do stupid poo poo when they're drunk. Hell in high school my friends and I would drive around and throw beef at street signs for some reason. Couldn't even tell you why but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Wait we weren't even drunk for that.

Maybe he did it to protest the positive remembrance of the technocrats of imperialism.Ward Churchill posted:As for those in the World Trade Center... Well, really, let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break. They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of America's global financial empire - the "mighty engine of profit" to which the military dimension of U.S. policy has always been enslaved - and they did so both willingly and knowingly. Recourse to "ignorance" - a derivative, after all, of the word "ignore" - counts as less than an excuse among this relatively well-educated elite. To the extent that any of them were unaware of the costs and consequences to others of what they were involved in - and in many cases excelling at - it was because of their absolute refusal to see. More likely, it was because they were too busy braying, incessantly and self-importantly, into their cell phones, arranging power lunches and stock transactions, each of which translated, conveniently out of sight, mind and smelling distance, into the starved and rotting flesh of infants. If there was a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers, I'd really be interested in hearing about it.

9/11!! This sonofabitch is going to fry. Terrorists flew planes into buildings, and it changed everything. Meh, I can't really talk. Every time I see a roadside memorial I want to torch it.

I can't imagine turning myself in for something I did while drunk, and then having everyone hate me anyway. That's some serious torture. The lesson here is never to turn yourself in.

He doesn't remember how or why, but he knows he did it? Curious. Of course, I've never been 'blacked-out-and-set-fire-to-a-memorial' smashed, so I don't know how blacked out memory works. It would be pretty ironic if he was pretty straight edge until that one night. "I'll go out drinking. Just this once. Nothing career-ending could possibly happen." That's a fairly sad story. Why is it always the grade-A kids who do horrible things? We're not surprised when a natural moron does something stupid, but this kid was a Harvard grad that was going places. Then he decided to become a terrorist.

NOTE: Like Schroeder, Barack Obama was a summer associate at Sidley Austin (in its Chicago offices, where the firm is based). Did Obama put Schroeder up to this? Someone call Orly Taitz.

Horrible? He didn't really harm anybody or do much damage beyond property damage. Offensive? Not any more so than burning down any other building. He didn't do it because of his hate for a religion. The people mostly offended by it are going to be the people who are already on soapboxes bitching about any little thing that seems to take away from the memory of 9/11.
