Got Me A Movie

Check out Corin Tucker's Stalker's fabulous thread here for non platform-specific info.

Release Dates:

Out Now (NA), November 6 (EU)

Console Specific Information as of Nov. 3, 1:13AM EST

Differences from PC
As you may already be aware, Dragon Age: Origins was born as a PC exclusive and only became a console port rather late in its development. What this means for you as a console gamer is as follows:

- Though by no means ugly, console graphics are, of course, at a somewhat lower quality compared to a higher-end PC.

- No Baldur's Gate style isometric camera. The camera is a fixed third-person view of your currently controlled character with 360o rotation and limited zoom.

- Console optimized UI.
      - In place of a hotkey bar, three abilities can be assigned to square, triangle, circle or X, Y, B buttons with an alternate trio set to be toggled by a shoulder trigger, giving you a total of six readily available spells/abilities.

      - Additional abilities can be assigned to a radial menu and triggered directly while the battle remains paused.

      - No full party movement control. Instead characters can be selected on the fly by cycling through the shoulder triggers and issued movement/ability orders individually.

- Difficulty
      - Due to hardware limitations, larger battles (40-50 allies/enemies) are staggered into waves of foes rather than one solid lump.

      - Friendly fire is turned off by default below Hard difficulty, though this may be an individually togglable setting.

- No mods, obviously.

I guess I'll be the first one to post - I've liked far more Bioware RPGs than I haven't liked, both on the PC and consoles, and quite a few of them were pure crack to me. I'm hoping this is one of them.

Whooo!!

I'm glad to be posting in this thread because hearing anyone ever talk about the advantages/disadvantages of PCs versus consoles instead of actual gameplay makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

That said, I predict those content-laden gameplaycentric posts will start flowing in tomorrow though, because most of us console babies are being held back by jerk game stores not giving us the game early because they care about "keeping their jobs" or something

Got Me A Movie

This'll be my first. Baldur's Gate, KotoR, Mass Effect, NWN were all games that I always heard good things about but somehow never got around to playing. I didn't even tie them all to Bioware until DA:O caught my attention.

It can never be too clean

If this game was truly BG3 I would definitely buy it for PC, however I have become jaded and pessimistic. Too many games have made promises like this and they never delivered. No doubt this will be a fun game and worth the money paid, but I won't miss the isometric view that is only for the PC. If I wanted Baldurs Gate I would play Baldurs Gate.

I'm really liking the way the combat and the actual gameplay looks but pretty much everything else looks awful so I'm kind of torn on wether to rent this or not, because I sure as poo poo ain't buying it.

Got xbox 360 version, arrives tomorrow, thanks to amazon shipping option which basically delivers the game on release date. Awesome, when did they made such an option exactly? Funny enough the game still came out cheaper, thanks to crazy rear end CA taxes, which amazon thankfully doesn't have.

Picking it up tomorrow morning. I was going to try and finish Batman first but I'm way too excited about this not to grab it.

The joy of the character creator, though, is that I can make my character tonight! Trying to make a Duelist that looks like Cary Elwes.

I couldn't get the creator to run on my PC

My first character is definitely a dwarf rogue, however; I always seem to gravitate to those classes in RPGs (Scoundrel in KOTOR, Thief in Oblivion, etc) and the dwarf commoner origin sounds the freshest to me.

They've been doing release date shipping for a while for certain games. The extra $10 GC along with this preorder was icing on the cake.

Just finished up Journeys on hard tonight to get my mage ring. Mm, elemental goodness.

Rogues are pretty good from what i've experienced so far. I like that you have to position your character behind stuff to get the backstabs activated and the stealth speed isn't super slow. They're also able to put out a lot of damage and attack multiple mobs. I'm also a good amount of money from stealing.

Giant Bomb review's up. Five stars.

quote:

In the end, Dragon Age: Origins feels like a real throwback to the good old days of PC role-playing epics. It also feels like exactly what you expect the makers of Baldur's Gate to come up with as a follow-up to that classic. While that means you could rightfully fault the game for not being especially innovative, it's this adherence to a classic style of gameplay that will ensure that it's welcomed by the legions of nostalgic RPG players that make up this genre's core audience. That said, this is definitely not the game for those frightened of the idea of micromanaging a game to the point where a large portion of it will be spent in a pause screen. However, as the sort of guy that has lovingly played an Infinity Engine game at least once every year for the past decade, I can think of no higher praise for this throwback than to say that Dragon Age: Origins leaves me feeling fairly confident I won't need to dig out the classics for this ritual next year.

Gamespot says the PS3 version is mostly better than the 360 version, for those of you choosing between the consoles.

quote:

The differences between versions aren't limited to the interface. Dragon Age doesn't look amazing on the PC, but it's an attractive game nonetheless. Zooming from an isometric view to a third-person perspective is slick, and while environments don't hold up quite as well when viewed up close, they're consistently lovely when viewed from above. On the flip side, the Xbox 360 version looks positively disappointing. Textures are highly compressed and colors are washed out, though the upside is that this version maintains a smoother frame rate than on the PlayStation 3, where things might get jittery when swiveling the camera around. The PlayStation 3 version features higher-quality textures than those on the Xbox 360, better color saturation, smoother facial animations, and shorter load times. Minor visual hiccups, like corpses that disappear and reappear, are a bit more common on the PS3, however. The PC version is the superior experience, but if you're choosing between the two console releases, the PlayStation 3 has the upper hand. Some minor glitches are shared between the console versions, however, such as rare occasions when the soundtrack or voice-overs disappear. We also ran into a few quest malfunctions that could be replicated on all three platforms, though they were relatively minor and did not interfere with the progress of the main quest.

PC got 9.5, PS3 got 9, 360 got 8.5.

On Gamefly I decided to go with the 360 version for two reasons. One was that it was showing as available yesterday (11/2) on the site and they shipped it out yesterday, meanwhile the PS3 version wasn't available until I think today. And also because there apparently is DLC available right off the bat for the 360 version according to Kotaku

But now that I read further into it, only those who purchase the full retail game will have access to the free DLC. Which is kind of a bummer because I often rent from Gamefly the day a game becomes available and if I like it I can keep it for 15 or 20 bucks less than retail and it is essentially a brand new game (I hate/never buy used games) because I got a first shipment copy.

e: Now I'm kind of enticed to go out and blind buy the game at retail just to get the expansions. The main site doesn't seem to differentiate between the add-ons being available only for the 360 as far as I can read. I do enjoy playing games on my PS3 a lot more, but another key deciding factor is the add-on for additional armor that will also be usable for Mass Effect 2. Which I am definitely getting. And even though I'm pretty sure there are no talks of a PS3 version of that, even if one were to come down the line I'm not sure I'd care to wait since it will no doubt be a great game, and the fact that you are supposed to be able to use your character from ME1 as well.

These are the kind of problems I face, not knowing which loving system to buy a game for. I feel kind of

You might want to shoot an email off to Gamefly. Since the free DLC is unlocked by entering a code that comes on a card, they might send you that unused card with the packaging when you buy the game from them.

I now this is a shot in the dark, but I'm much more comfortable asking here than in some other places.

I got DA:O special edition for PC, but I want to get Mass Effect for 360, so the special armor code doesn't do me any good. Anybody here get DA:O for 360 that's getting Mass Effect for PC and wants to swap codes?

Edit:

I should probably add, since I don't have Platinum, that my e-mail is rawsatire (at) hotmail.com

The codes will be connected to your EA/Bioware account and should be cross-platform compatible.

If you do decide to "Keep It" you'll most likely get the dlc code when they send you the manual/box. I kept Forza 3 from them and my code was in the box and untouched.

I'm renting the PS3 version because they're sending it out tomorrow and I didn't have an open slot in time to grab the 360 version.

This game is driving me nuts and Ive barely started.

First I installed it to the 360 hard drive and downloaded the free Shale content and the game would lock up at the main menu. Once I deleted Shale it worked again, so I guess Im screwed there. Then I played 2-3 hours through the City Elf origin, which was pretty good, and when I got to the end and was recruited to the Wardens - disc unreadable error, plus it corrupted my saves. Uninstalled the game, mashed through the origin in like 30 minutes and it finally got me through to the game proper. Im paranoid now that eventually Ill hit a crash or error I cant get past and wont be able to finish the game. Not to mention Im forced into playing without the free content and with longer loading times.

I blame my very old 360, not the game or disc itself but it's really getting to me since Ive been looking forward to this game since like 2007

I'd hold onto Runes, even if you don't want them. They have another purpose later, and 60 silver is basically cat food.

Enemy damage and HP changes significantly, and enemies tend to use better tactics on harder modes. You can even see this between easy/normal. On lower difficulties, enemies may forgo ranged attacks or use weaker moves, while on harder modes they'll fight more intelligently. I've seen cases where I tried difficult modes on a fight and a boss stood back and fired arrows and ranged attacks while I was fighting his mooks, but switched to running in like a spaz if I lowered the difficulty, and started using harder-hitting moves and more debuffs when I popped it up even higher.

How far back is the camera zoomed out on this? I ask because I get motion sickness; Arkham Asylum, Fallout, and Oblivion (well, those last two are technically the same game) are unplayable for me.

If the camera's placed back along the lines of a DMC4 or FFX, this game's a definite purchase for me.

Oh, okay. Well, I'm getting slaughtered in the forest against the first tough Darkspawn (don't know if that is out of the "origins" part of the game or not), maybe I will turn the difficulty back down to normal.

Are you wandering into the traps? Remember that the game gives you a rogue, and that you can order the rest of your party to stay still.

Also, one tip, especially early on: If you don't have anything you absolutely want to invest your Talent Points into, don't level up. Unspent Talent Points can be spent later on something you meet the level requirements for instead of wasting them on something "now."
