OM NOM NOM

http://www.battlefield1943.com/

Aren't there already like 2 threads about this game?
Yes but they're primarily about the console versions of it, this is just for the PC version.

What's Battlefield 1943?
A strictly online FPS with 3 classic Battlefield maps remade for it: Wake Island, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. There's a 4th map called Coral Sea which is a dogfighting map that unlocked when the respective consoles reached 43,000,000 kills. Whether or not they'll do the same for the PC is anyone's guess. There is no single-player. Think of it as Battlefield 2 except on a better engine, set in WWII and with only 4 maps.

What teams are there? How do you win?
The two factions are Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and United States Marines (USMC). The gamemode is classic conquest. The more flags you have and the more you kill, the quicker the enemies tickets run out. The health system is different from other Battlefield games in that you regenerate health. To win Coral Sea you team must dominate a giant circle area in the centre of the map by shooting other planes down.

What classes are there?
Scout, Rifleman and Infantry.
Scout is your typical sniper class.
Rifleman use a KAR 98 if you're IJN and an M1 Garand if you're USMC.
Infantry is your run and gun SMG guy.
All classes have a pistol and a melee weapon.

If you're wondering why the Japanese are using a German weapon, DICE say: "The IJN are using a German K98 instead of an Arisaka. This choice was made not out of ignorance but rather because of budget constraints and we could not afford to build the correct rifle. We had a German rifle and had to go with it."

Does it have vehicles?
Yes! Tanks, jeeps and planes. There's also an air raid bunker where you can guide in 3 bombers and blow poo poo up.

Wait, didn't the consoles get it in July? Why the huge delay on the PC?
DICE decided they would make a proper version of 1943 for the PC instead of a sloppy console port. They're also optimising the Frostbite engine for the PC, as 1943 will the first PC game to use this engine.

What's the difference between the PC version and the console versions?
The PC version will have a 32 player limit (as opposed to 24 on consoles), joystick support and a server browser. DICE have been very vocal about dedicated server support, making GBS threads all over Infinty Ward and their IWNet service. There is apparently more 'PC goodness' but they haven't specified what.

When does it come out?
Q1 2010, it'll be something nice and cheap to play while waiting for Bad Company 2.

Cheap? How much is it?
£9.99/$15/€12.99

Where can I buy it?
As of now, only the EA store although DICE plan to sell it through Steam.

I'm eager to see how the Frostbite engine is on the PC and whether it's an improvement on the old, rusty and riddled with bugs Battlefield engine.

Oh hey, lots of Battlefield coming to the PC after a three year hiatus (unless you count Heroes, I don't know what happened to that). This looks pretty interesting, something to fill in the wait for BC2 as you said. From following the console thread a few months ago I got a bit of a "tech demo" vibe from it, though...

Looks pretty sweet for a cheap game. I've never really played any battlefield titles, but I assume vehicles play a large part in it?

I loving loved Red Baron II (my last dogfighting sim) so this will be a real blast to the past.

I figure because the maps were originally designed for 24 players, they'd just be way too small for 64 people.

It would support 64 if you put 32 of them in the sky with aeroplanes

There've been some rumours about 128 players on the Frostbite 2 engine that Battlefield 3 will use.

Quite liked the console version, so I'm going to enjoy actually being able to aim well on the pc release due to mouse aiming, but with other people getting that too I guess it means I'm not going to be able to run around with a katana and go on a killing spree for 10 minutes because nobody can shoot for poo poo.

I expect that with player hosted dedicated servers we'd see the player limit go up, or that they'd atleast put out maps designed around a larger number of players.

I do it because I love you.

Why do people think more players make a better MP game? Even in the BF series, the original Berlin map was awesome with 20 players but when there was a full 64 server it just plain sucked.

I will be waiting for this game. I hope it captures some of the magic or the original game.

Larger scale fights on maps suited for them are amazing to take part in, if the map is not suited to a large scale fight it will be the bad variety of clusterfuck where you're essentially tripping over other players.

Fantastic!

No Midway? But how will I get my fill of being called "faggot" when I ram my destroyer into the enemy's carrier for the tenth time?

Sandvich posted:

Yeah, Iwo Jima would be just like ridiculously overcrowded with 64. 32 Americans all try to run ashore and two Japanese dudes in tanks just sit there racking up hundreds of kills. Even Guadalcanal would be a bit much once the roads started loading up with cannon fodder.

On the other hand, Wake Island would be pretty hilarious with 64 players, but then again I hate Wake Island and will gladly support anything that ruins it for everyone.

It's been live for quite a few months now, it's a really fun game, nice blend of shooter and "level grind" addiction. Loads of people 'cos it's free, but some quirky enough microtransaction stuff to support development. I ended up spending half the purchase price of an AUS retail game on stupid costumes and emotes etc. None of the things you can buy help you in gameplay terms, with the possible exception of a "double XP for x days" thing.

Just hit up the website and jump in.

Not necessarily better but definitely more fun, at least for some (me). You get a huge map and a bunch of uncoordinated pubs fighting all over the place. Not really a good example, but I loved BF2142's Camp Gibraltar with 64 players. Tiny map with almost no vehicles, it often ended up being a gigantic grinder with plenty of over-the-wall grenade spam.

Truly a horror for a regular player but it didn't stop me from loving it. Until I got banned from some of the regular servers I played on for God knows what reason. Pretty much lost all desire to play.

Joys of dedicated... oh, well, lets not go there.

The M1 Garand isn't bolt action. It's the first Semi-Automatic rifle to be used by American forces.

Also, this game look awesome. The Xbox 360 version is a lot of fun, but I find the controls infuriating. Glad there's a PC port.

Who cares? I doubt the PS3 can render 256 people at the same time so that's obviously going to be compartmentalized to hell through map design or occlusion.

Whatever platform Battlefield wants to run on I usually follow. I have 'Nam, BF2, BC, and 1943. Whenever someone starts talking about how great the next Call of Duty is going to be I ask them if they've ever checked out Battlefield and almost always they ask me "what is that?" I always chuckle, and say condescending things in my head beacuse they think they've found the best war combat simulator out there. I got knews for them, you can't know what full out virtual battle is like unless you've had a player-controlled dual seated apache hovering over your spawn point. Then you gotta go into commando-stealth mode, manage to sneak out and get into position to either rocket the chopper from your anti-tank missle laucher, get on the AA, or snipe that mother loving pilot out of his seat through the glass. Love my battlefield and can't stand its sellout wannabe a real online combat game cousin Call of Duty.

Oh and speaking of BF, I've always wnated to get into competitive BF2 or at least partner up with someone who wnats to be mainly my helicopter buddy among regular cap-point taking and sabotage missions.

Dedicated server support, PC optimizations and perks, cheap price tag AND they're calling Infinity Ward mean names? Color me intrigued.

So one question... Based on their previous titles, how good are they about stuff like adjustable FOV / mouse sensitivity / fine-tuneable graphics settings?

My one beef with CoD4 was the drat tunnel vision FOV on what was otherwise a really good port, so if I'm going to take this up as a substitute for Modern Warfare 2 it'd be nice if DICE are even better about that sort of thing.

It took them five years before they decided using a widescreen monitor wasn't cheating, so... I'm not sure. Hope for the best, and that the "made for PC" stuff isn't just them pulling a Borderlands.

$15, actually.

Yeah, it's a cheap cash-in, but I'm cool with that. It looks a little fun, and I'm not going to go cry about no 64 player servers when most of the BF1942 ones were pretty bad.

BF2 was really the only game in the series with maps that were actually designed to support 64 players. In all the other games, it was just a clusterfuck.
