The sequel has officially been announced! New info directly below, scroll down for the base game and expansions/DLC.![]() ![]() On July 8th, BioWare officially announced Dragon Age 2. With a new main character, a new art style, and reworked combat mechanics, it appears that the sequel won't simply be a new story with a few tacked-on minor updates. Whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen. The official announcement: quote:Dragon Age 2 thrusts players into the role of Hawke, a penniless refugee who rises to power to become the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age. Known to be a survivor of the Blight and the Champion of Kirkwall, the legend around Hawke's rise to power is shrouded in myth and rumor. Featuring an all-new story spanning 10 years, players will help tell that tale by making tough moral choices, gathering the deadliest of allies, amassing fame and fortune, and sealing their place in history. The way you play will write the story of how the world is changed forever. I'll keep updating the OP as new info comes out. In the meantime, here's some concept art: ![]() ![]() ![]() BioWare's spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins is a single player RPG for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 built upon the Eclipse engine with a proprietary D&D-ish rule system. Unlike BioWare's last few titles, it began as a PC game and that continued to be the lead platform throughout development. A single playthrough including all side missions will take an estimated 80+ hours. They drew the most powerful mages and the finest warriors from all races and forged them into a fighting force that time and time again drove back the Blight. They remain legends, watching with vigilance for the return of their ancient foe, and stand ready to do battle once more when that day arrives. The player will create a character with one of six backgrounds (Daelish Elf, Dwarf Commoner, Mage, Human Noble, City Elf, Dwarf Noble), each of which has a unique starting experience and elicits different reactions from NPCs as the game goes along. Hence one meaning of the "Origins" part of the title. ![]() You control a party consisting of up to four active members - your character and three NPCs. You'll meet more party members, but as in previous BioWare games they'll hang out by a campfire and gossip about you behind your back while you fight skeletons and orcs. The camera can be pulled back to a Baldur's Gate-style isometric view or zoomed in to several behind-the-back views as in Mass Effect. Sorry, no first-person 2.5D view with toilets that can be flushed and kicked. Talking Thankfully, there is NO Good/Evil alignment meter. Instead, the way you handle conversations and the choices you make will simply have an impact on the people that hear about those particular choices. There is a dialogue tree with lots of questions, snarkiness, persuasion, intimidation, and hidden options that will pop up depending on your investment in things like Cunning and Willpower. There is also a TON of incidental dialog between your party members and in the world around you. Fighting Combat takes place in real-time, but you can pause at any time to issue specific commands to your party members, and you can establish tactics for the AI to follow while you focus on the character you're controlling. During combat you can perform combat skills, cast spells, and chug potions. As long as one of your party members survives a fight, the rest will regain consciousness at the exact same moment when the battle is over. Thanks, guys. I totally believe that you weren't just pretending to sleep while I did all the work. ![]() Each class has a set of four specialization subclasses. ![]() Newest questions are added to the top. Be sure to check back often, I'll be updating this section as much as possible. What builds are viable? Every build can beat the game. Even an archer, which is generally considered the weakest. All you need to do is focus on what you want to do (i.e. backstabbing as a rogue, tanking as a warrior, whatever), think about the talents and type gear you're going to want, and make sure that you spend your Attribute points accordingly. I'm an Arcane Warrior. Which spells can I cast without sheathing my weapon? Added 11/24 The Dragon Age Wikia has a really helpful list of every spell in the game, tagged to designate whether or not they can be cast with a melee weapon in your hand. How much of (stat x) do I need for the high-end equipment/special abilities? Added 11/17 You can head off anywhere you'd like, but there are differences in difficulty. Threep posted this handy map that suggests the ideal (but not required) level range for each location: ![]() Are there any good mods? Updated 11/17 Speeddub put together a comprehensive list of possibly useful mods that you should really check out. How do I get more slots in my quickbar? Added 11/14 Grab the right-hand border and drag it as far as you'd like. You can also shrink it if you don't use many skills/items. Where are my screenshots saved? Added 11/13 Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\Screenshots\User I read up on Tactics and have everything set up, but my guys are just standing around. Added 11/10 There are a few things you might have done to make your team a bunch of idiots. - You pressed 'H', didn't you? H puts everyone on Hold. They'll only attack someone that comes within range of their weapon. - See that drop-down menu in the top-right on the Tactics screen? Sometimes people accidentally set a melee dude to Ranged, or Passive, or something else that just plain doesn't work. I've never experienced my AI spazzing out when it wasn't a direct result of something I did, but some people say it does happen. If all else fails, just select the problematic party member and kickstart him by manually giving him an order. What are the bonuses for item sets? Added 11/8 KoB posted:Griffon: Immunity to Flanking How the heck do I register the game and get my DLC? I'm getting errors! To register the game, head to http://social.bioware.com/user_bw_games_register.php and create an account/log in, then enter your key. For Steam users who aren't sure where their key is, right click DA:O in your games list and choose "View Game CD Key" It will be the key with no dashes. For Impulse users with key problems (including a "serial already in use" message), head to the Impulse EA Subforum and check the sticky thread. (thanks to Gabrielite for this one) DLC Code Redemption Instructions: 1. Enter your code at http://dragonage.bioware.com/redeem. Again, make sure you've created an account and are signed in first. You will probably get an error message, but chances are it worked and the social site is just acting screwy. For Steam dudes, this is where you'll enter the code(s) with dashes. I believe that if you pre-orderered, you'll have a code for each DLC and one for your bonus items. 2. Start Dragon Age: Origins and log in to your EA/BioWare account. 3. Go to the Downloadable Content menu to view the download progress. 4. Once installation is complete, follow the instructions in the Quest Journal. My DLC downloaded, but it's not showing up in the menu at all! 1. Shut down Dragon Age: Origins 2. In Windows, press the 'Start' button and select 'Run'. In the command line type 'net stop DAUpdaterSvc' 3. Navigate to 'My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Settings' and delete 'Manifest.xml' 4. Navigate to 'C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Application Data\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\' and delete the 'DAUpdater' folder 5. Restart Dragon Age: origins and log in 6. Your content will be available for redownload on the Download Progress tab Thanks to Zarkov Cortez for finding that. How exactly do I get (insert specialization here)? You can unlock specs for other classes, you just can't use them on that character. Once a spec is unlocked, all of your future characters have access to it. alseyn posted:Somebody posted this earlier, saved it for myself but didn't get name. Jesus, this game is hard. Absolutely. The default difficulty will require you to pause, think about what's going on, and coordinate your characters on a regular basis and still go through a few potions in most fights. Easy requires less pausing (if you set up your AI's Tactics) but is still fairly challenging. What's up with sustained talents/spells? Do they drain all my energy? Also, what's fatigue? Sustained talents and spells set aside a portion of your total mana/stamina while they are active. If you have 70 mana and use a sustained spell with an upkeep of 30, you will have 40 mana to draw from until it is deactivated. Fatigue increases the mana/stamina cost of all abilities by a set percent. You can see your current fatigue level on the lower left of your character pane. What are some good tactics? There are two basic tactics that will help in just about every combat situation. 1. Self: Health below x% (25 is usually good, 50 if you're paranoid) -> Use health poultice: Most powerful 2. Enemy: Target of main character -> Attack (or their primary Talent/Spell) Make sure that all of your companions have these tactics, and you'll have a team of focus-firing dudes that can heal themselves if things get hairy. As you progress, you will adjust to compensate for new talents and methods of crowd control, but this is a good start. Do unused party members level up? Yes. They seem to gain experience at a similar rate to the active party. Is there a level cap? BioWare has stated that most players will probably finish the game somewhere between level 15 and 20, while it's looking like 23 is the most you'll probably be able to reach by doing every quest/unlocking all chests/disabling all traps. Do enemies scale? The first time you enter an area, they scale within a set range depending on your level. For example, if you enter a zone with a predetermined range between 3 and 7 at level 3, they will mostly be 3 and 4. If you enter at level 8 or higher, they will be 7. Some creatures that are meant to be particularly challenging are handled in a different way that hasn't been specified. How do I enable the console? Are there any good commands yet? Start the game with -enabledeveloperconsole in the shortcut, so the Target field looks something like "blah/daorigins.exe" -enabledeveloperconsole. (Note: If you're on Steam just right click on the game in your list, then go to Properties->Set Launch Options and plug in -enabledeveloperconsole) Once you're in the game, hit the ` (tilde) key to bring up the console. It won't be visible, but it's there. Now you can enter any of the commands found right here, but be careful because a few can potentially screw up your progress/saves. What are the differences between the PC and console versions? (added 10/15) PC: Full camera control (can pull back to an isometric angle), the ability to select the entire party at once, full UI with a hotbar, user-made mods and access to the toolset. Console: Camera limited to behind-the-back with some zooming, can only control one character at a time, button mapping for potions and a few of your combat talents as well as a radial menu, official DLC only, less enemies in big battles. What's in each version? The regular edition simply has the game plus free DLC in the form of The Stone Prisoner (a quest and recruitable NPC) and Blood Dragon Armor (a suit of armor that will show up in the game as well as a suit of armor for Mass Effect 2). The boxed Collector's Edition comes in a tin case, with a ubiquitous cloth map, extra DVD (Making of, art, soundtrack), three exclusive in-game items, and the DLC mentioned above. In addition to this, there is a Digital Deluxe Edition that comes with all of the above DLC as well as Warden's Keep (which will also be available separately for $7 US). This didn't really get commented on in the last thread, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to post it again. So here are some random comments and questions I have: Yes the game is hard (on normal) and has been requiring lots of micro. I use at least one potion per fight usually and usually someone dies. I haven't had to reload at all though. I made a warrior and I feel like I should have made a rogue. I've just entered the first town and I feel like I've had too many warriors in my party and I don't like missing out on chests. Should I ever be using a bow on my warrior? I made a dwarf warrior and he started with two weapons and a two-weapon skill that I've never used, because what type of dwarf warrior doesn't use a huge loving axe? I can't tell how useful the Skills are. Do I need to be making traps? I was going to take herbalism, but I feel that someone in the party will always have it and it might not be the traditional warrior thing. I guess I'll get coercion even though it requires cunning, but the tool-tip says you can use strength to intimidate. Does a warrior need Magic? I've been mainly doing strength and constitution. I haven't put any in magic. I feel like I need to crank up willpower for my stamina because of the next point I make. How do we manage all these stances? I think I have 4 different ones right now and they drain my stamina so fast even with just one enabled. It doesn't really seem obvious when to use say Precision Striking over the big wild two-hander one. I haven't completely figured out the Tactics yet, so I've been microing a lot. I understand they happen in order, but do they cycle through all of them before going back to the first one? On Daveth in the beginning I couldn't find a way to Stealth on first enemy sighted, so I just had him stealthed at all times. Then out of stealth though he would open with his dirty fighting which doesn't give the backstab/crit bonus from stealth. Should tactic 2 been just attack and then dirty fighting been 3? Wouldn't he then never use tactic 3 if tactic 2 is just attack and has no stamina requirements? God, my computer chair is really uncomfortable. This game has lots of story/reading/listening and wish I was on my couch and TV.

I realize most of us are just starting out but I am still interesting in hearing about opinions about running a dual wielding warrior. DW is stat heavy and I can expect to only have 3points x ~15 levels = 45 points to put to strength or dexterity. Anyone doing this right now? Also, any opinions on useful/useless warrior specializations? Barb/Reaver looks like a great match, but champion looks cool too. Templar wear skirts so gently caress that poo poo

Un-l337-Pork posted:Are rogues pussy in this game or what? Can I make a dwarven rogue that is headshotting people without getting the poo poo kicked out of him? Will I find a tank early on or is it better just to make a warrior and tank that poo poo myself? Can I bone the healer mage without hearing about how her wings got ripped off or whatever the gently caress? rogues are excellent damage dealers and have very good utility besides. Also keep in mind only 2 possible recruitable NPCs can be rogues -- five of them can be warriors and you get a pre-specced tank immediately after your origin story concludes. the healer mage is an elderly woman who is not romanceable

Aw, the hell with the DLC, I'm jumping in. The dwarf commoner/ thief story is awesome. You're literally gutter trash selling your sister to a pimp.
