So I recently made a couple of changes to my diet, one chiefly being that I stopped drinking soda in favor of water. Which is great and all, but I miss having flavorful soft drinks to go along with my food, so I was wondering if you all could suggest something that won't make me gain 10 pounds when I eventually give in.

I'm guessing cane sugar isn't magnitudes better than sodas sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, so Jones et al are out, but what about diet sodas? How do aspartame and splenda/sucralose compare? And has anyone tried stuff like Izze that can recommend them? Thank you very much.

Coke Zero is the poo poo.

There's going to be a bunch of fags in there in a minute telling you that you should quit drinking anything that isn't water. Diet sodas are fine. Find a flavor of diet you like and go with it.

Be sure to drink water too though.

Are Coke Zero and Diet Coke not essentially the same thing, with a different label?

I'm looking for something primarily to drink with my meals as opposed to throughout the day, so don't fear for my water intake.

Completely different, at least to my taste buds. With Coke Zero they really did get pretty close to actual coke taste. The Aftertaste of Diet coke makes me gag

Yeah. Diet Coke tastes terrible to me, I don't taste any sweetness in it. Coke Zero is loving magical.

I don't really understand the controversy with diet sodas. If they have no calories they have no calories. Other than being high in sodium I don't really see a downside.

Is this like Ribena? That sort of thing doesn't exist here (or at least is very uncommon). Powdered sugar mixes are much more popular. I'm sure they come in diet varieties.

Yeah, like ribena basically. Concentrated juice, to which you add water.

How about sparkling water with a hefty squeeze of citrus, or a flavored mineral water? That's what I tend toward when I don't want something as sweet as diet soda, but more flavor than plain water.

just stop drinking non-diet soda, it's loving disgusting, I remember like a year ago some guy posted somewhere something to the effect of "i switched to diet soda and eventually you start appreciating the way it tastes sort of crisp and regular soda will taste too sweet " and I thought he was a big loving pussy but he was right. it's not a matter of "once you are deprived you will learn to appreciate what you have" but rather, you get used to not requiring excessive amounts of sugar in the stuff you're drinking to enjoy it, and neurologically adapt. I don't even really like juice any more because it's mostly pointless to drink.

Yeah I'll often just squirt some lemon or lime juice into ice watter whenever I want something different. It's not really sweet at all but tastes different enough to enjoy.

Diet Coke was designed after the New Coke fiasco to be the competitor to Pepsi. In focus groups people overwhelmingly said they preferred the taste of Pepsi to Coke, so the Coca-Cola Company came out with New Coke and pissed everybody off. When they brought back Coca-Cola Classic they also introduced Diet Coke, which nobody had any loyalty to either way. It was designed from the start to be a 'smoother' competitor to Pepsi, since if Coke was 'bitter' and Pepsi was 'smooth', more 'smooth' must be better. That's why they used to have tons of commercials with Ray Charles advertising "Just for the taste of it, Diet Coke!"

Anyways, after 20 years they realized they needed something to appease the Coke loyalists who were approaching retirement and getting diabetes. So they created Coke Zero, which also allows them to avoid the 'diet' moniker because focus groups have said they don't like the association with dieting in their sodas.

So, in terms of flavor:
Pepsi=Diet Pepsi=New Coke=Diet Coke (ish)
Coca-Cola Classic=Coke Zero

This is also part of the reason why there are so many commercials advertising that any particular diet soda tastes 'more like regular XXXX', since Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Classic taste so different.

I'd also like to agree that once you get used to diet sodas you can't stand the sweetness of regular sodas. Every time I have even a sip of regular soda it feels like it coats my teeth in goo. I used to drink tons of Mountain Dew (hey, it was high school) and now I can't even handle the smell of it.

I switched to diet coke in law school because I was drinking like 6 20 oz bottles a day to stay awake through classes. And aside from that, I'm one of those people that just HAS to have a beverage at my side ALL DAY, EVERY MINUTE. But for some inexplicable reason I went back to regular sodas after I graduated, and that's when I *really* started packing on the pounds.

When I eventually quit them again, I saved my last mountain dew can like some people save the last cigarette in their last pack. I think I'll put it in a display case someday with a little plaque, or something stupid like that.

I think unsweetened iced tea is a pretty good alternative to plain water, very refreshing, and you can always put a little bit of lemon in it for negligible calories extra. It also gets you a modest amount of caffeine but not a crazy amount. I'd down that all day, except it's expensive bottled and I never remember to make it myself even though the drat iced tea maker is sitting right there on the countertop.

For me Coke Zero still tastes too "diety." The flavored ones like Cherry Coke Zero are pretty drinkable though.

As for Izze, it tastes pretty good, but it has about the same calories as a regular Coke. So the only real benefit is a tiny bit of vitamins. Looking at their website, it does look like they've come out with a low calorie version but I've never seen/tried it.

Unless you are a phenylketonuric, there is basically no rational reason to drink sugared soda. It takes a little getting used to but after that you will come to prefer diet soda.

When I first switched, I had to mix regular and diet Coke. You could try that while you get used to it.

Agreed. I used to be unable to STAND diet flavored soda. I ridiculed those who drank them.

I forced myself to switch this summer after working day after day in a cubicle. Within two weeks, I found myself addicted to diet.

Now, I'll take diet over any regular soda. The flavor is delicious. You just have to watch out, though, because diet soda has a risk. The body expects sugar because it tastes sweet, and then it doesn't get sugar, so you get cravings. You're not as satisfied by the diet coke and you want cookies or something with sugar in it. Gotta fight those urges.

I also used to hate the taste of water, but about two years ago I steadily started drinking more water as part of a new year's resolution and I haven't looked back since. I can now go between water and diet soda with ease and am really happy about it.

Good luck! You can do it!

Diet soda is ok but I can't stand the taste of diet coke or coke zero. I literally hate them.

I couldn't stand the taste of water either at first but I somehow got used to it over the months and years. By now it's the only thing I am drinking daily. There's a chance I could get used to diet coke as well but, well, there's no reason to. I will stick with original coke from time to time instead

Fight them with whole grain cookies sweetened with Splenda.

Gingerbread is actually better with Splenda. It doesn't turn rock-hard.

Or DIY frozen yogurt. Take fat free plain (unsweetened) yogurt, mix in fruit, fiber and Splenda. Freeze in an ice-cream machine and serve whenever.

I find that I can trick myself with the fiber. My body, I assume, just thinks the sugar hasn't gotten into the system yet, but it must be there because the fiber has substance to it.

I heard (and it could be bullshit) that Coke Zero was also an attempt to market it towards men.

Basically every single diet coke advert in the UK has a load of women drooling over some bloke on a "diet coke" break.

So it had the appeal that diet coke was for women, so coke zero is basically the same but with adverts which has stuff blowing up and general bloke stuff.

Diet Dr. Pepper is the best zero calorie soda on the face of the planet.

Diet Dr. Pepper (or, D.D.P) is by far the best. My diabetic friend, who's surveyed every possible diet coke vouches for this. Also Diet Barqs rootbeer is really good.

I'm not gonna tell you not to drink diet soda, but how long did you give it up? I drank 4-8 a day for 20 years basically, and after six months of just water I don't miss it anymore. I had two last month on different occasions to prove to myself I can do it in moderation now - and they tasted amazing, but the way a 1500 calorie sundae does. I don't wish I had soda at every meal now.

Edt: and yes, until April when I stopped drinking soda, I would go das, sometimes weeks without drinking water. I'm amazed I'm not dead of kidney failure at 26, but I'm doing a lot better now.

The one or two in diet sodas may not be the ones that will kill you, but they very may well be the ones that do. Chemicals in everything? Well, why not try to decrease the intake of chemicals where you can then?

People keep saying how easy it was to get used to the taste of Diet Coke/soda over the course of a couple weeks... why not instead get used to the taste of something else instead? If you aren't drinking water on a consistent basis, try it out for a while, it might do you some actual good (besides just quenching your thirst). Other alternatives have already been mentioned, and they are great (I liked the iced tea idea - not a big fan, but why not become one).

Go ahead and enjoy your soda from time to time; but everyday, multiple times a day? C'mon now.

When it comes to food/drinks I like, I have no self control. I used to drink a lot of Dr. Pepper, and decided to just cut to water. So I did only water for a long time. I also began to miss the soda, so I'd have a can every now and then, especially on the weekends. Then I realized what I wanted to avoid was the caffeine. There are a lot of choices for caffeine-free sodas, unfortunately that type of Dr. Pepper has not been available locally.

When vacationing in Wisconsin to see family, I discovered a local brewery called "Sprechers", and they also have a line of fantastic sodas. Formerly I had been interested in IBC, but I didn't purchase it all that often. Sprechers gave me a renewed interest in niche-market sodas. Sadly, you can't get Sprechers soda in Massachusetts (where I live). Trying out different brands of glass-bottle soda lead me to the "Polar Classic" product, which is an old-timey take on Polar's regular soda. It also helps that Polar is located in Worcester MA. ALL Polar soda has no caffeine, and the Polar Classic also uses cane sugar instead of HFCS, not really a big deal for me but for some it is.

Anyways, the point of my ramblings is, I still drink water all the time, but I treat myself to a single bottle of Polar Classic (Vanilla Cream or Root Beer) at dinner. On the weekends I may have a bottle at both lunch and dinner. I was pointed in various directions by friends who made suggestions, but ultimately I had to try out many different kinds before I found what would fit into my narrow criteria. And rather than drinking just that, I made sure I moderated myself down to just one a day at a meal, and drink water the rest of the time.

From a physiological standpoint this is BS. If you're getting urges from something without sugar in it to have something WITH sugar in it it's psychological (all in your head). This is as bad as the people the last time we had this thread saying you'd get a Insulin spike from drinking diet soda because it taste sweet.

Also if you can't control your urges, switching to diet soda isn't going to do poo poo for your diet because you're likely to fail anyway.
