Since the iTunes App Store was introduced in July 2008, the iPhone and iPod Touch have become quite the mobile gaming powerhouse, with some of its best titles rivaling what you'd see on the DS or PSP. Stats are few and far between when it comes to Game-specific Apple statistics, but as of September, 2009 Apple announced there were more than 21,000 games available for the iPhone. While this is an impressive feat in itself, it unfortunately means the vast majority of them are crap. Thankfully, this thread is here to help us sift through the thousands of games on the App Store and find the really good ones. But before that, here are some links. Previous Threads iPhone Game Threads The following is a list of threads for iPhone games that are popular enough that some goon gave a poo poo and started its own thread:

Also, here is a rather spiffy goon-run iPhone gaming community site created by our very own Yaoza: http://www.playhaven.com/ Thanks to io_burn http://toucharcade.com is a great resource for iPhone gaming news. Eeenmachine has also put together a site categorizing the best of the App Store with games having their own section: http://appclassics.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Featured Games (i.e. what you should be playing now) Eliminate Pro (First Person Shooter, Free) - The latest title from ngmoco:) brings a legitimate MMO-esque FPS to the iPhone. The premise is pretty simple: Players use energy to enter into deathmatches with other folks across the world. The more you win, the more credits you get to buy and upgrade weapons and armor. Limited energy means you can only play for credits a few times a day (unless you pay extra for more energy). Tricky controls and the occasionally lackluster 3G support are the only things that hold this game back. Doom Classic (First Person Shooter, $6.99) - The classic title finally makes its debut on the iPhone. If you can get past the typical iPhone FPS controls, you'll find a very solid port of one of the classic FPS titles that started it all. Rock Band (Music Tapping, $9.99) - Bringing as much as it can from its console brethren, Rock Band allows iPhone gamers to play songs by "tapping out" either lead guitar, bass, drums, or vocals (actual vocals are not supported - it's just tapping). With it's impressive built-in music store, Rock Band is a decent music game and a solid competitor against the Tap Tap games (but don't expect it to sway you if you're not a music game fan). Canabalt (Twitch Jumping, $2.99) - Admittedly, I don't know much about this twitch jumper, but it appears to have a big following among goons. Sniper vs Sniper (Tap Shooting, $4.99) - A very addicting online multiplayer game where you play as a sniper scrolling through environments looking for your opponent to snipe. Goon Classics: (Courtesy of the spiffy AppClassics mentioned above) ![]() Game with Goons As requested, the following is a list of good WiFi/3G games that are recommended for some goon on goon action (a lot of these have separate threads listed above).
Have a request for any of the lists above or below? Feel free to post it in the thread or send me a PM if you feel it pressing. The Giant loving List of iPhone Games The following is an impressive collection of good iPhone games that were compiled by this thread's previous owner, BOOM! DOCTOR WATSON, along with current additions by goons in this thread. It's a sure bet that every one of these games has its merit and deserves at least a download of its lite version (assuming it actually has one). Games are organized by category. ACTION Moon Drop Another masterpiece from eeenmachine and Nimblebit, the goal of this title is to steer your "lander pods safely onto the landing pod." Addicting as always, and worth the price of a big mac. Top Gun A great fast paced, arcade style flight shooter featuring a new story based on the classic movie. Also you get to listen to Highway to the Danger Zone (well worth it for that alone). Meteor Blitz One of the best space shooters available on the iPhone platform, hands down. Alive 4-Ever Zombie-themed twin-stick shooter that owes more than a little bit to Left 4 Dead. Play as one of four different characters to complete thirty missions and earn cash to buy a variety of weapons. One of the best twin-stick shooters on the iPhone. Blades of Fury A Soul Calibur-alike that somehow manages to make good use of a virtual D-pad to create the best one-on-one fighting game on the iPhone. Blue Attack A top-down shooter in which you and a group of wingmen defend your space station from attackers. Has an extensive upgrade system and glowy not-quite-vector-style graphics. Bluebird You control a bluebird trying to fly as high as he can. Tap your screen to make the bluebird flap its wings and eat bugs while avoiding other birds. Car Jack Streets An open-world action game in the style of the old top-down Grand Theft Auto games (in fact, some of the original GTA team worked on CJS). You have to do odd jobs to earn $50,000 per real-life week to pay back a casino owner to whom you're in quite serious debt. The game runs in real-time: when someone tells you to get somewhere at 10:30 PM, you need to get there when it's actually 10:30 PM. The main issues with Car Jack Streets are the lackluster driving controls and the wonky collision physics, but it's a good game past that. Doom Resurrection An excellent rail-shooter based on Doom 3 with an all-new story. This is a really impressive technical achievement and one of the best-looking 3D games on the iPhone, and it's fun as hell to boot. Dr. Awesome Similar to the arcade classic Qix, this has you cutting away parts of a cell to isolate and destroy virii. The twist is that it reads the contacts on your iPhone to give the patients the names of your friends. I LITERALLY CRIED IRL (no I didn't) Dropship (Lite) A twin-stick shooter, played in 2 dimensions but viewed in 3. Navigate your ship through labyrinths of ever-increasing complexity to rescue human hostages and retrieve a package. Vector-style graphics reminiscent of classic arcade games like Asteroids. Earth vs. Moon Appears at first to be a simple Missile Command clone, but soon turns into a wild homage to arcade classics like Space Invaders and Pong, with a great sense of humor. Eliss (Lite) This one is kind of difficult to describe with words, so I would advise you to just check out the Lite version. Suffice to say that this is a really stylish, original game that makes great use of multi-touch controls. Enviro-Bear 2010 Who is driving that car? Oh my God, a Bear is Driving! How can that Be?! This is literally the best dollar you can spend on the App Store. Anyone who doesn't like it is probably racist against bears. F.A.S.T.: Fleet Air Superiority Training Somewhere between Top Gun and X-Plane in terms of realism, F.A.S.T. is an Ace Combat-esque dogfighting game framed as a series of training exercises. It also includes a robust network-play mode. Hero of Sparta Gameloft's answer to God of War. You control a guy with a cape as he slashes through a whole bunch of monsters to save the President or something. I can't really remember, but it's pretty fun. Uses an on-screen joypad and buttons to control the action, which work reasonably well. Hybrid: Eternal Whisper The latest from Gamevil, this is a 2.5D beat-em-up not dissimilar to Devil May Cry with RPG elements and gorgeous pixel art. I Dig It Not unlike Dig Dug, I Dig It has you playing as a farmer who has to dig for gems underneath his farm to save it from foreclosure. Beautifully polished graphics and little touches like a fuel meter set this one apart. iDracula (Lite) A twin-stick shooter in the vein of Geometry Wars, but from an isometric persective and with a Castlevania-esque vampire hunter theme. Use flintlock pistols, blunderbusses, and other increasingly ornate and destructive weapons to defend yourself for as long as possible against hordes of monsters. Isotope (Lite) Geometry Wars with "rpg elements". A twin stick shooter with two gameplay modes, campaign and survival. In Campaign you play through various arena style combat missions gaining money and experience to purchase new ships, upgrades and abilities. Survival mode is just straight up arena wave combat, . Best to attempt this when you have a good, leveled up ship and plenty of addons and abilities or you won't last long. (by Bummey) Knights Onrush (Lite) Use your finger to murder knights attacking the door of your castle. You can also buy defenses like cannons and ballistas to mount on your castle, or just hang the dudes on a hook and let a dragon eat them. Like Stick Wars but not lovely. Kryzer Prologue (Trailer) You basically spin around a circle and shoot things. Watch the video. Like Flight Control, it's great for quick play with difficulty and speed that ramps up much quicker than Flight Control. (by Bummey) Kyper Tilt your iPhone to move your ship back and forth to avoid falling orbs. The object is to go as fast as you can, which is accomplished by moving as close as possible to the yellow orbs while staying away from the orange ones. Metal Gear Solid Touch (Lite) Essentially a very polished shooting gallery game. MGS Touch retells the story of Metal Gear Solid 4 in text cutscenes, in between which you control a stationary Snake taking out Outer Heaven paramilitary personnel and other enemies. Modern Combat: Sandstorm A first-person shooter with some of the best 3D graphics on the iPhone and a virtual D-pad-centric control scheme that somehow works really well. This is probably the best FPS on the iPhone right now. Payback (Lite) Another GTA clone, this one has actually been around on various platforms since 2001 or so and sets itself apart by having a full 3D engine with HDR lighting. Payback has a more traditional GTA structure, answering phones to do missions at your leisure rather than working within time constraints. It uses the accelerometer for turning instead of a virtual D-pad, but the jury's still out on which control scheme is better. Resident Evil: Degeneration (Lite) A Resident Evil game in the third-person style of Resident Evil 4 and 5, with a storyline following that of the Degeneration CG movie. Some accelerometer features, like shaking the phone to shake off an attacking zombie and tilting the phone back to reload your weapon. Resident Evil 4 Now we're talking. This is an abridged version of RE4 with a kind of nonsensical plot, but the gameplay is still there and still awesome. Plays like Degeneration (above), so play the lite version of that if you're curious about the controls. Samurai: Way of the Warrior Similar to Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, this is a top-down swordfighting action game with gorgeous 3D cartoon graphics. Scoops Another accelerometer-based game from NimbleBit (creators of Bluebird and Kyper), Scoops has you tilting the phone to catch falling scoops of ice cream on a cone. That's pretty much it, but it's amazingly addictive. Sky Burger A sequel of sorts to Scoops, featuring the same tilt-stacking gameplay, but this time you're filling orders for a burger restaurant. Catch the right ingredients and avoid the wrong ones to complete orders and earn Pieces of Flair. Space Invaders: Infinity Gene Vertical scrolling shmup that starts out like the classic Space Invaders, but soon becomes something entirely alien (no pun intended). A fantastic minimalist style and the ability to create stages on-the-fly from songs in your iPod library make this a must-buy. Wolfenstein 3D Classic (Lite) The id Software classic, ported very smoothly to the iPhone by John Carmack himself. All six episodes of the original game, each with ten levels, and a control scheme that works a lot better than it should. If the quality on this is any indication, the upcoming Doom port will be amazing. PUZZLE Magneto A quasi-goon made puzzler featuring magnets! Intriguing, simple gameplay combined with .99 price tag makes this one worth a shot. Mr. Driller It's Mr. Driller. On your iPhone! What more needs to be said? Namco actually did a good job bringing this title over, so it deserves some praise and play. Block Busting Planet Panic Block Busting Planet Panic is a physics-based puzzle game with 50 levels. Destroy various blocks, while making sure your rover does not fall. Storm Attack Storm Attack is an addicting, fast-paced, arcade block-blasting game. Drag, organize, and zap away a constant stream of falling blocks… but be careful! Every minute, a storm rains down an ever-increasing swarm of blocks. Archibald's Adventures (Lite) A fantastic puzzle platformer from Rake in Grass, the people who brought you Jets 'n' Guns for Windows. You're a kid exploring a mad scientist's laboratory, using all manner of devices and contraptions to get through safely. Aurora Feint: Arena Daemons (Lite) A fantasy-themed Match 3 puzzle game with an MMORPG element. You can level up your character, gaining more abilities, by recording a "ghost" of your best times and pitting that against other players' ghosts in an online arena. The production qualities on this are off the charts. Azkend (Lite) Another ridiculously polished Match 3 game, this one is played on a hexagonal board and has an East Asian theme. I've personally put a ton of time into this one, trying to finish boards as quickly as possible. Blocks2 Lumines, basically. Unfortunately it lacks the synaesthesia element of Lumines, but the core gameplay is all there. Drop7 (Lite) Drop numbered balls into a grid, clearing the balls with a particular number on them when there are that number of balls are in the corresponding row or column. That is a really bad description, so play the Lite version. Dungeon Scroll Similar to PopCap's Bookworm Adventures, Dungeon Scroll has you forming words from a set of letter tiles to deal damage to monsters and collect treasure. Flight Control Flight Control has garnered unanimous critical acclaim. It's a chaos-management game in which you draw a path for approaching aircraft to land on their respective runways. Starts out slow but gets incredibly chaotic before long. This was just updated with two more airfield layouts. Geared Drag gears into their proper position to connect one fixed gear to another. You have a limited number of gears of specific sizes so the challenge comes from finding the perfect positioning to reach from the first gear to the last. Hanoi A particularly nice-looking implementation of the classic tower-stacking puzzle. HydroTilt (Lite) An accelerometer-based physics puzzle along the lines of Archer MacLean's Mercury. Tilt the iPhone to roll a drop of water around an assortment of rails and platforms, using various devices to turn it into a ball of ice or a cloud of steam. The most recent update adds a level editor. PathPix PathPix is a number puzzle in which you have to draw lines across a grid between a pair of numbers, the numbers specifying the length of the line. There's only one possible solution to each puzzle, and the lines are automatically colored such that the whole thing makes a picture when you're done. I've been utterly addicted to this for the past week. Peggle The best mobile version of the infamously addictive PopCap game. Like Pachinko on crack. Everyone always wonders what the big deal is about Peggle, then they play it... and play it and play it. There is no reason not to buy this. Puzzle Quest (Lite) The entirety of Puzzle Quest on your iPhone. This one had some serious issues when it came out, but the latest version has had the major problems ironed out and is now perfectly playable. Well, the AI still cheats, but that's nothing new. Ravel (Lite) Wheel of Fortune, without the wheel. You're also given all the letters needed to solve the phrase, but it's harder than it sounds. (by Bummey) StoneLoops! of Jurassica (Lite) Basically Zuma, harder to describe than just linking this gameplay video. (by Bummey) TanZen (Lite) If you dig tangram puzzles, this is the game to get. It's got over 400 puzzles, none of which are particularly challenging, but it's a great game to play when you've only got a minute or two and you don't want to play anything stressful. Textropolis An anagram game, this has you making as many words as you can out of the names of cities. Each word you make adds to your population total, but asking for a hint kills off a few of your citizens. Toki Tori (Lite) A port of an almost-forgotten Game Boy Color puzzle platformer in which you guide a little yellow bird of some kind through increasingly complex levels to collect all the eggs. The graphics and animation are simply gorgeous. Trism (Lite) A tile-matching game that makes full use of tilt controls: the direction from which new blocks fall is determined by the orientation of the iPhone. Trixel (Trailer) The goal of Trixel is to flip over tiles and make the game board match the image in the upper left. Each time you pass over a tile with the cursor, its color flips. You can normally only move up, down, left and right, but certain powerups and items allow you various other movement patterns and tile flipping capabilities like bombs and teleporters. (by Bummey) Unify Kind of like Puyo Pop, except the blocks come from both sides and stack in the middle. Also features a trippy synaesthetic electronic soundtrack. Word Ace Like Texas Hold-Em, but with letters being used to form words instead of poker hands. Features online and offline play, and there's a pro version that costs $1 and includes 12,000 chips and the option to buy more. Words with Friends Multiplayer Scrabble over the Internet. A random matchmaking feature means you'll never be without a game, and you can also search for a specific player by username. The Lite version is fully functional with really annoying ads. Zen Bound (Lite) The sequel to indie PC game Zen Bondage, this has you tilting your iPhone and using your finger to wrap a wooden object with a rope. The objective is to wrap it in such a way that the ink bleeding out from the rope covers the entire object. Zentomino (Lite) Much like Tanzen, this is a recreation of the classic Pentomino puzzles. You have to arrange tetris style blocks onto a shaded shape on the board. Since it contains many more pieces of varying dimensions and each puzzle does not necessarily use every piece, it is far more difficult (though no less good) than Tanzen. (by Bummey) PLATFORM Wheeler's Treasure A goon made randomly generating platformer with pirates? Sounds like a recipe for success. Hook Champ - A grapple-based platformer featuring retro graphics that's been pretty well received here on the forums as well as the rest of the iPhone gaming community. Blimp: The Flying Adventures Use the accelerometer to fly a blimp around beautifully hand-drawn levels to ferry cargo and passengers from one platform to another. The whole game has a gorgeous steampunk ( Bounce On (Lite) Roll and bounce a ball around four worlds, collecting gems and avoiding enemies. This is one of the oldest platformers on the App Store, yet its creators continue to support it and add new content. Castle of Magic (Lite) A cartoonish sidescrolling platformer reminiscent of classic Genesis and SNES games. Uses virtual buttons, but they actually work reasonably well, and it runs on a solid framerate for the most part. Gomi A curious little sidescroller, like LocoRoco meets Katamari done in MSPaint. Contains over a hundred fairly long stages, so this one will be with you for a while. Rolando (Lite) Rolando is basically the Super Mario Bros. of the iPhone. It's a fully-realized, insanely polished platformer that simply would not work on any other device. Tilt the phone to roll the Rolandos around while using your finger to manipulate devices and objects in the world. Cute, colorful graphics reminiscent of LocoRoco round this one out. Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid The sequel to one of the best games on the iPhone, Rolando 2 moves from 2D to 2.5D graphics and adds a lot more types of Rolandos with unique abilities. Everything good about Rolando is even better in the sequel. Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor Made by some of the guys behind Thief, Spider has you swiping your finger across the screen to make your spider jump and spin webs to trap bugs. What really sets this apart are the amazing hand-drawn backdrops that tell an extremely interesting story if you really look for it. Soosiz A quirky Platformer with great art style that's gotten rave reviews from TouchArcade, among other iPhone gaming sites. Elements such as reduced gravity, freezing fountains, and slippery surfaces are some of the things that distinguish this game from other platformers. TOWER DEFENSE 7 Cities Based on the colonial setting of "7 Cities of Gold," this has you defending your settlements from invading pirate ships. The twist is that your towers gain experience as they destroy enemies, and are awarded new abilities that way. The Creeps In this fixed-path TD game, you're defending a sleeping kid from monsters using things like flashlights, glue, and boomerangs. A colossal update was released not too long ago, adding a bunch of new levels, items, and powerups, and the most recent update adds Facebook integration. Crystal Defenders (Lite) An open-field tower defense game based on Final Fantasy Tactics A2. If you like people with clothes made entirely out of buckles then this is the tower defense game for you! Fieldrunners An open-field TD game in the vein of Desktop Tower Defense. This is a goon favorite, not least because the author has been releasing frequent content updates. GeoDefense (Lite) Another fixed-path TD game, with an aesthetic more like Geometry Wars than anything else. Things really start looking crazy when you've got a bunch of towers blasting away at a bunch of enemies. GeoDefense Swarm The look and feel of GeoDefense in an open-field format. Not a lot to say about this one; it's GeoDefense where you make your own paths. Sentinel: Mars Defense Another fixed-path TD, this one is sci-fi themed with gorgeously detailed graphics for everything down to the menus. It's intensely polished and more than a little challenging. Some of the enemies have immunities to certain types of weapons so it forces you to strike an effective balance between your towers. Sentinel 2: Earth Defense The sequel to Sentinel: Mars Defense, the most notable addition here is that your ship is armed with a super-weapon of sorts. All of the polish and glitz of Mars Defense is still present in this one. Star Defense The latest from ngmoco, Star Defense is a sci-fi themed TD game played on a sphere instead of a flat plane. This means that the enemies can roam over the entire surface of the planet, so you've got to continually keep tabs on every part of the map. This one has gotten mixed reactions from goons, but general critical reaction has been positive. Vanguard Storm (Lite) The sequel to Crystal Defenders, this is presumably similar in style and play. I haven't actually played either so I can't really offer an opinion. ADVENTURE Beneath a Steel Sky Considered a cult classic, BASS comes to the iPhone remastered, offering the same "narrative puzzle-solving" that it's been known for throughout the years. Flight of the Amazon Queen A port of a classic SCUMM point-and-click adventure from 1995, in which you're a 1940s-era turboprop pilot whose plane crashes in the Amazon jungle while carrying a prissy actress. To my knowledge, this isn't really a native port, but instead an implementation of SCUMMVM using the original game data. Frotz A Z-machine interpreter. It includes an integrated IFDB browser, allowing you to download any number of Z-code games from the Internet in addition to the assortment of good-to-excellent games included with the app. It's the only one on the App Store right now, as far as I know, and fortunately it's a good one. Myst It's Myst. You know the drill. This is a big one, clocking in at over 700MB. Return to Mysterious Island A port of a 2004 PC adventure based on "The Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne. Unlike Myst, the iPhone version of RtMI has apparently been cut down, with some portions of the story and ambient noises removed. However, as far as I know, the gameplay is intact. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition The iPhone version of the Monkey Island remake that came out on Steam and XBLA in July. It looks great and plays just like the original, although a few people have complained about the way the cursor moves. Simon the Sorceror 1 Another ScummVM game packaged up and sold on the App Store. Simon the Sorceror is a classic point-and-click adventure by Adventuresoft Publishing, one of LucasArts' main competitors in the early '90s. RACING 2XL Supercross (Lite) One of the best-looking 3D games on the iPhone, 2XL Supercross is a dirtbike racing game along the lines of Motocross Madness. 2XL Games employs a rather nifty trick in which the amount of stuff on the screen is scaled with the processor of the device it's played on, ensuring a solid framerate on every device. Fastlane Street Racing (Lite) A supercar racing game reminiscent of classic Ridge Racer titles, Fastlane features a solid 60FPS framerate and gorgeous city environments. Mastering drifting is tricky, but necessary to winning races; fortunately the game contains an Easy Mode to help ease the player into it. Need for Speed: Undercover The iPhone version of the latest entry in the long-running Need for Speed franchise is a glitzy, high-stimulus affair which has you racing totally sweet import tuners against other totally sweet import tuners to see who can do the most totally sweet powerslides and totally sweet nitro boosts. 24 events, five drift competitions, and and 20 cars make up for the fact that it's rarely very challenging. Phaze Essentially a clone of Sony's Wipeout games: zero-gravity vehicles on futuristic suspended tracks, with powerups and weapons galore. Real Racing This is the cream of the crop as far as iPhone racing games are concerned. The whole thing oozes quality, from the intro video (rendered on the fly) to the menus to the cockpit view with the HUD on the actual instrument panel. Even without licensed cars, this is about as close as we're likely to get to Gran Turismo on the iPhone. SlotZ Racer The fanciest button-pushing simulator of them all. This is basically a recreation of toy slot cars, with one button that you use to accelerate (but not so much that you fly off the corners). SlotZ contains a number of tracks and events, but the real meat of the game is using the accompanying track editor to create and share custom tracks with other players. STRATEGY Archon (Lite) A port of the 1983 classic in which you take turns moving your pieces around a shifting chess-like board, doing battle in real-time when once piece attempts to capture another. Chess with Friends Asynchronous multiplayer chess over the Internet. Civilization Revolution (Lite) The latest installment of the venerable Civilization series, designed to be easy to learn and quick to play. This is exactly the same game as the 360/PS3/DS versions, sans multiplayer and fancy-pants graphics. Some people are reporting sluggish performance on older devices, but for the most part this is a pretty good port. Defender Chronicles: Legend of the Desert King Defender Chronicles is what happened when Warcraft III, Odin Sphere, and a tower defense game did something really horrible one night and somehow all fathered a single child. Defend your castle against the approaching hordes while constantly leveling up and buying new gear for your hero. Mecho Wars A really, really slick Advance Wars clone. Somehow this is by the same guy who did that godawful WiiWare platform, the name of which I can't even remember. The entirety of Mecho Wars is simply gorgeous, and while it's missing a few of AW's niceties, it does a drat good job of approximating the experience. Orions: Legend of Wizards This is a fantasy-themed CCG dressed up in a campaign in which you have to defend your own castles/cities/towers (called orions) against opposing wizards, while simultaneously attempting to capture theirs. Rise of Lost Empires (Lite) The closest thing to Warcraft III we've got on the iPhone right now. The graphics are really nice and vivid, and it has two single-player campaigns so it's of a pretty decent length. SimCity An almost direct port of SimCity 3000. The only differences are the lack of elevation (the whole city is on a flat plane) and a reworked, finger-friendly UI. This had some stability issues when it first came out, but it's pretty solid now. Star Hogs (Lite) Star Hogs is a Scorched Earth-style turn-based artillery game set in space. Customize your ship with a unique weapons loadout and battle other ships in environments of varying gravity. Also has a robust online deathmatch system. UniWar Another Advance Wars-style turn-based strategy game, this one is played on a hex map and features play-by-email multiplayer. The multiplayer could use some streamlining, but at this point it's already quite playable. Warfare Incorporated Warfare Incorporated is a port of a popular Palm OS/Pocket PC game from a few years ago. It plays (and looks) a lot like the classic Command & Conquer games. Unit selection is a bit of a pain but overall it plays pretty well. You can also download a bunch of add-on missions from within the game. ROLE-PLAYING Undercroft One of the better first person, turn based, adventure RPGs around. This game features a full party experience and over 20 hours of gameplay. Dungeon Hunter The best Diablo clone out for the iPhone. Period. If you love hack n' slash and collecting tons of items and equipment, look no further than this game. Arvale: Journey of Illusion (Lite) A Final Fantasy-esque RPG with turn-based battles. It's not half-bad, and it's of an appreciable length. Arvale: Ocean of Time (Lite) More of the same as above, except now with time travel. It's also apparently a lot longer. CozyQuest An MMO! Sort of! This is the kind of MMO you play in a web browser by clicking on pictures of poo poo and watching numbers go up, except it's all presented in a dandy little package with some decent art. The author adds content pretty frequently, so if you can get past the grind (of which there is a lot) it's a decent little MMO-lite. The Quest (Lite) The Quest is the closest thing we've got to an Elder Scrolls game on the iPhone. It's a port of a Pocket PC game, so the interface is a little messy at times, but the production values are still pretty high. It's a freeroaming open-ended RPG with a 3D engine and 2D sprites. An expansion called " Rogue Touch A port of the original Rogue, all duded up with a fancy tileset and a GUI for inventory management. There are a few cheat codes in that entering certain character names awards you special abilities and equipment, but I'll leave those to you all to find. The Sims 3 The iPhone version of The Sims 3 offers a pretty good distillation of the elements that make The Sims great: namely, being a huge gay slut and peeing your pants in public. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer complete house customization, only a set of predefined layouts in which you can arrange your furniture how you like, but it's still got that all-important element of horrific abuse. Underworlds (Lite) A Diablo-esque hack-and-slash RPG in which you play the role of a warrior exploring the catacombs under a town to kill a bunch of dudes and save some other dudes I guess. It's only a few hours long, but the developers are currently beta testing an update which will apparently more than double the size of the game. Wolfenstein RPG A port of the classic cell phone game, this is a turn-based first-person RPG set in the Wolfenstein universe with a mix of high-res 2D and 3D graphics. Zenonia Zenonia is a port of a Korean mobile RPG. It's a Zelda-esque hack-and-slash adventure, but unlike most of the other RPGs on the iPhone, it's got enough content to rival full-sized console games like Final Fantasy or Secret of Mana. The pixel graphics are nice, but not very well scaled, although if Gamevil's other iPhone game, Baseball Superstars, is any indication, that will soon be rectified. SPORTS Backbreaker Football Another great football game with pretty sweet graphics (for the iPhone at least). Skee-Ball It's a perfect replica of Skee-Ball, without the annoying snot-nosed bastards that try and steal your tickets when you're doing the real thing. Authentic skee-ball physics, tons of prizes, and an addicting personality, makes this a great game to check out for a buck. 9 Innings: Pro Baseball 2009 (Lite) 9 Innings is a deep, if fairly obtuse, arcade baseball game from a Korean developer. The Engrish is pretty extreme, last I looked, so it might be a little hard to figure out exactly how everything works, but it's straightforward baseball. Baseball Slugger: Home Run Race 3D Past the unwieldy subtitle lies a completely loving awesome online home run derby game. Near-instant matchmaking, smooth, simple controls, and a huge array of gear to buy for your batter ensures that you'll be playing this for ages. I haven't heard a single person who's played this say they don't like it. Baseball Superstars 2009 (Lite) Baseball Superstars is another baseball game from the creators of Zenonia. It's less serious than 9 Innings (you get to wear wacky helmets and go on dates), but it's got just as much baseball action. You can take a single batter or pitcher through an entire career, and shake your fist in impotent rage as you play a flawless game while your teammates completely screw everything up. Flick Fishing This is a very clever little fishing simulator that uses the accelerometer to cast a line and the touchscreen to reel in a fish. You can send records of your catches to other players to brag about it, then they call you a liar, just like real fishing! Let's Golf! (Lite) This entry in Gameloft's "Games We Ripped Off from Other Franchises" series is a serviceable clone of Hot Shots Golf (or Everybody's Golf for you non-Americans ) with lush graphics and an arcadey feel.NFL 2010 The first and so far only licensed NFL game on the iPhone. Everybody assumed that EA had the license tied up on the iPhone like they do on every other platform, but then along comes Gameloft all of a sudden with a pretty good NFL game. Uses a virtual D-pad, so if that bothers you, stay away. Touchgrind Touchgrind is a frankly stunning fingerboarding simulator. You put two fingers on the screen, and the movements of your fingers translate perfectly to the board. The physics are near-flawless, and it runs at a perfect framerate. X2 Football 2009 (Lite) I don't know anything about soccer, but I'm told that X2 Football 2009 is the best simulation of the sport on the iPhone. It certainly looks nice and controls beautifully. The Deep Pinball Probably the best-looking pinball game on the App Store. The whole table is rendered in full 3D and is fully animated, and the physics are pretty drat close to those of a real table. Freeballin' (Lite) A set of five fantasy/sci-fi themed tables, each with a ton of bonus and secret areas and even some boss fights. Monster Pinball Another really nice-looking pinball game, this one is in 2D but still has really pretty, detailed tables. Pinball Dreams (Lite) A port of a classic Amiga pinball title from 1992, this allows you to play the tables as they looked in the original title or with a fancy new skin. Each table is 100% drawn in pixel art. Pinball Fantasies The sequel to Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies maintains the same high standard of retro graphics but with even better tables. Wild West Pinball The precursor to The Deep Pinball, this has similar high-quality 3D graphics but with an Old West theme. Mr EFord fucked around with this message at Nov 07, 2009 around 05:28 |

Whenever you update the list, can you please include some global WiFi(or3g) games to play with friends? Obviously in this category would be Chess With Friends, Words with Friends, Eliminate, F.A.S.T. etc etc

Will do, right now, I'm rewriting the intro blurb, adding some stats, and making sure all the other iPhone threads have a link. I'll definitely add in the separate game threads that are here in the Shack.

Might want to add Soosiz to platformers and Meteor Blitz to action.

Gameloft just announced they are bringing The Settlers to the iPhone. Ubisoft loving owed me that one, considering the clusterfuck that was Settlers DS - a game universally panned by anyone who's ever played it except me, because I'm a hopeless fan. There's a video on TouchArcade and it's looking tasty. I would've prefered a port of Settlers II, but I'll take what I can get. Ports of Command and Conquer and Settlers on the AppStore (two of my three favorite games of all time) were but pipe dreams of mine, it's hard to believe both of them were made. The game list needs a music gaming section. I think Rock Band and my current favorite, Ninja Honda Karate can be placed in it!

Thanks to io_burn http://toucharcade.com is a great resource for iPhone gaming news. I've also put together a site categorizing the best of the App Store with games having their own section: http://appclassics.com

Are there any other iphone app games out there like Papaya Farm? Or more specifically farmville(facebook game). It doesn't necessarily have to be a farming game. I just like the work your way up building/farming whatever to the top gameplay. It's really casual pop in and pop out since it takes hours for things to grow. Multiplayer is a plus too being able to visit each others whatever and help out.

Also you should add Moon Drop. It's probably the only game I've put more play-time into than Sky Burger.

Everyone's requests have been added. I wish there a better way to organize that unwieldy list, but it's organized about as much as it can be (I did put Skee-ball under sports though And gently caress that alphabetizing, I don't know how the last guy pulled that off. vvv I'll take your word for it. I downloaded the new version of TouchPets using my Canadian account, signed out and then signed back into my U.S. account. But when I try to install the app it says installation failed because I'm not authorized for it on this computer. Which is strange since I didn't have that problem when I installed the previous version of the app. Any know why this is happening, or how I can fix it?

This is more from the last thread, but I really think Romance of the Three Kingdoms should be up there in terms of Strategy games which could be recommended. It plays close to some of the older versions of the game and it plays nicely on the iPhone.
