Hey everybody, it's the Game Recommendations thread! I checked the first ten pages of Games to see if such a thread already existed, and it doesn't appear to, so I figured I'll give it a shot. Essentially, this is the big thread where you come and present a situation, and hopefully some of the knowledgeable folks in Games will give you a hand and tell you a few other things to play. Whether you're looking for a simple online game to pass the time, looking for some under-appreciated FPSes to play, or if you're looking for something else to play after you poured hours into Fallout, just ask and ye shall receive. Maybe. If this takes off, I'll add a bunch of recommendations to the OP as a simpler way for people to find something else they'll like without having to post a question that may have already been answered. I'll start things off. a) This one might be a bit obscure... I'm looking for a free-to-play Windows and OS X compatible multiplayer game to play with my girlfriend. Almost any genre would work, and browser-based is fine, as well. Ideally something that would be easy to get in and out of. b) I really found myself enjoying Portal. I know there aren't many humorous first-person puzzle games, but are there any other puzzle games with a similar campaign? Something that actually has a story progression? Doesn't have to be first-person, but I wouldn't mind. c) I also found myself really enjoying Blueberry Garden. What are some other quirky indie games to try out? Cost isn't too much of a factor, as they all seem to be pretty low in price to start with. Make of these what you will.

How about Battlefield Heroes? Its free, runs on Windows and Mac, is Java based, so all you need is a browser. I believe my favorite game of all time was probably Ultima 4. I am looking for a good sandbox type RPG that satisfies the following criteria 1. Don't pigeon hole me into a quest line. I'll do it when I want to. 2. Let me do whatever I want. If I want to be a farmer and make money selling lettuce for a living, fine. If I want to be a badass mage, fine. 3. Not too graphically intense. My PC is about 6 years old (my video card about 2). I have a single core 3.4 GHz processor and 3 GB of RAM running win 7. 4. Please, for the love of god no half naked women in chainmail bikinis running around. I have small children and a body-conscious wife. I have already played Oblivion, Mass Effect (too many half naked women I'm afraid), and Fallout 3. They were all OK, but still felt pretty contrived in a lot of spots.

Fallout 3 has some of the most horrifically violent headshots I've ever seen. Plus they're in slow motion.

I myself am always looking for multiplayer games where you can build stuff, or have a kind of 'survival' setting (Stranded). Really any genre is fine, whether it be zombies (building forts and what-not to survive), or some kind of team vs. team base building thing. Basically anything where a friend and I could make some sort of base, and just say 'gently caress you!' to everybody else. I know Garry's Mod is a gold mine as far as this goes, and Minecraft will be great once it's got survival mode in, but if any of you know of anything particularly good, I'd appreciate the info.

So, I had a love-hate relationship with Mario Sunshine. I loved the parts where you're running around the regular levels doing the various missions, cleaning up the crap everywhere, and HATED the parts where your pack was taken away and you had to do those balls-hard and tedious platforming sections. Would I like Super Mario Galaxy? Also, I enjoyed Total Annihilation like crazy, and TA: Spring as well. I also like Red Alert. I suck at Starcraft. Would I like Supereme Commander?

If you really liked TA though and can get it cheap you'll probably get a decent amount of fun out of it. I believe the expansion improves it quite a bit and might be stand-alone. I just recently got an xbox 360. I'd never intended on buying a new system but I just couldn't pass up the great deal Walmart offered Saturday. Anyways, I'm wondering what some of the better FPSs are that are out there. I'm looking for an FPS that: 1) Has a large online community. 2) A leveling system (a co-worker mentioned Rainbox Six 2 was fun online because you could gain levels or what not) or some kind of progressional(not a word) reward system. 3) Isn't Halo 3 (nothing against it, my roommate already has it so I don't need it). Any suggestions would be great!

ArmA 2 is extremely rewarding, but is slower paced. Its single-player is worthless but multiplayer is amazing and we have a great goon community for it. It is a very realistic, tactical game, but that means that sometimes the missions involve you walking around with your squad, and having very little enemy contact until your leader gets sniped out of nowhere and you need to drag him behind cover, carry him to a medic, and then end up pinned down and shooting back randomly. You will not always get a kill in every mission, and in some missions you will get 20. Operation Flashpoint 2 is much shallower, but easier to get into. Controls and gameplay are extremely simplified, and it feels more like a shooter than military simulator. It also has single player that is worth a drat. It also feels very small in scale compared to ArmA 2, and is more repetitive with less realistic weapons and lower weapon variety. If you have free time, don't mind extremely difficult to learn controls, and appreciate a challenging multiplayer experience, but extremely fun and rewarding, get ArmA 2. If you want an SP game that is a hair more tactical and realistic than other shooters, get OFP2. Whatever you do, don't get OFP2 on 360 though, and don't get both because you will end up hating both because ones strength is the other's weakness. Edit: ArmA 2 does involve a LOT of walking, driving / flying, and thinking and map reading. It is really not a shooter. Now for my question: I like old-school shooters. I am looking for a modern conventional shooter with good multiplayer. I'm very tired of TF2 because of how incredibly shallow it is. I enjoy Unreal Tournament games, all of them, but UT3's community died. I am currently loving Shattered Horizon but I would like to play a shooter on the ground sometimes too. I loved Call of Duty but have liked every sequel less than the last. Is there anything out there for me, or am I best off just going back to playing Call of Duty 1 and UT2004? I posted this before, and got some good ideas, I'd like to see what comes up if I ask again. I'm looking for a multiplayer game that's in between a deathmatch shooter and an MMORPG. What I mean by that, is I want something more involved than jumping into a TF2 server and pew pewing guys, but nothing with the level of involvement of a grindy MMO. I was waiting for Borderlands because I thought that would be my fix, but I'm really disappointed in the PC version. The multiplayer is really non-intuitive when it comes to playing with the people you know, and the ease of cheating is incredibly disheartening. Oh well, I only payed $35 for it. I've said it before, and I'll say it again; it's a drat loving shame that there aren't good PW servers for NWN2, or I'd be all over that poo poo. That said, I don't think there's an RPG that I want to get into... it's a shame I can't get into Guild Wars.

I'd say Modern Warfare 1 would probably be way harder to get into because it rewards people who do well and there's people who have been playing it since the day it came out and know every single nook and cranny and have the best possible equipment setups etc. Modern Warfare 2 you will probably do far better in, as it's new and everyone will be on equal footing, plus it has certain things that will help you out. If you go on a killing streak you'll get rewards that will help you do better, if you get dominated and keep dying over and over again you'll get certain things given to you to give you a fighting chance etc. They're both pretty accessible, arcadey shooters but I'd say the second would be more accessible for a new player.

I think I realized why I loved Call of Duty so much and didn't like the sequels. I love bolt action rifles. Are there any modern shooters out there in which I can use a bolt action rifle as a valid option in multiplayer? If I recall correctly, Call of Duty 2 had bolt actions made comparatively weaker because of the health regenerating in cover.

It's an exrtremely realistic FPS. You have to shoulder your gun and fire using 3d iron sites, otherwise you shoot from the hip. While your gun is shouldered you can only walk. You cant fire while running. No more than 2 or on extremely rare occasions, 3 bullets to kill someone. Stamina. Leaning. Grenades are thrown a realistic distance and react like large chunks of iron, not rubber. Many of the bolt action rifles also have bayonets if that's your thing. Oh it also has vehicles.

Pretty much what Weinertron said. ArmA2 is very large scale (small arms combat is pretty much anywhere from 100 to 500 meters) and open but you need to plan things out or things will go to poo poo. There is practically no indoor combat like Rainbow Six but it still requires a lot of strategy. You need to know when and where to shoot from, know how your weapons work and what units you are fighting. You need to coordinate (thank god for teamspeak). It's far more of a teamwork game than a shooting game and is rewarding in that way. Just be aware that you need a good computer to run it (though BIS is great with patches and are constantly optimizing it) I haven't played OFP: DR but I heard it's a more simplified type of tactical game for better or worse. It's more polished but lacks the depth of ArmA is what I get from all the talk of it. And that CM doesn't really support their community and is getting huge backlash for it. Be aware that the game is based on a respawn system so there's a huge lack of coordination on the larger servers and for most people it's basically running to where you were last sniped to snipe the guy who shot you. There's no incentive to preserve your life except for the reinforcement counter. That being said, bolt action rifles in RO are really fun once you get the hang of the huge lead and drop you need to have in order to hit someone. Also, pretty much shoot using something as a support and you'll be fine for the most part. vv oh yeah you need to click to cycle the bolt. It's fun ^^. I just got Dragon Age the other night and my fiancee spent about an hour creating a character in it. Afterwards I pointed her at the character creation tool for the computer and while it causes her laptop to chug a bit, she has spent several hours putzing around with it. For whatever reason she just loves creating and customizing new characters. She asked me to help her find other similar games and I'm not sure where to start as I frankly don't even understand the appeal let alone if a whole genre exists. So, can someone recommend to me a game where the character customization is the point of the game that is not garbage? We have PC/Xbox 360/PS3/Wii available but she would prefer if it was something on the DS.
