This is more of a rant since I can't do poo poo about it. I have posted about my aunt and cousin before but here is a breakdown of the crap I have to deal with. - Aunt and cousin have been here 20+ years and still talk like they are FOB. - Cousin recently asked me for use of my SSN because he is on public assistance and needed to work. And he called me to his church on a sunday to ask me. - He is on public assistance because his mom "forced" him to do it, he got beat up in HS. so because the city runs the school, the US government owns it also so they owe him money, hence he being on public assistance. - My aunt refuses to learn any technology, she has to ask for help to do anything. - She believes that people are always listening in on her conversations over the phone and her house is bugged. In a couple of hours I have to go over and help her transfer over funds from her ING account into another checking account since it is too complicated for her to do. Auntie what do you want me to come over for "Oh I don't want to talk about it over the phone"  - My aunt wants me to find a place to hold $5000 for her from her kids for some reason. - her kids don't really talk to her at all. Her daughter got married and has a kid, mom wasn't invited or told, and even though they are in the OC and she in Los Angeles, they don't talk to each other. Whenever I go over I have to listen to her cry about her daughter not talking to her and she not being able to see her grandaughter. E: I know why she wasn't invited. She always dresses like she came straight off the boat. In my lifetime I have only seen her wear this stupid headscarf, ALL THE TIME, and a ankle length skirt and some ratty old white sneakers. All the time. Any event she dresses the same, won't dress up for anything, - My aunt used to get public assistance and work 2 fulltime jobs yet refused to own a car. Her son barely got his drivers licence at 42 years old. There are tons of Vietnamese families I know that live in public housing and get welfare but drive a Lexus/Mercedes and keep diamonds and cash in the house. It's how they roll. e. also who gives a gently caress if they don't assimilate, depending on where your family is from they probably left to escape terrible circumstances and don't want to abandon their culture because despite what's happened, that country is where they grew up and where they will always feel is home. Don't give them your SSN, don't give them money, don't give them help when they ask for it. Essentially you have to drop them in the water and make them swim. They'll figure it out if they really, really need to. OP, where's your family from?

I think it's sad your aunt didn't get told about her daughter's wedding and doesn't get to see her granddaughter because she dresses in a way that embarrasses her daughter. I promise that all families, regardless of nationality, embarrass their children in some way. Most children don't refuse to speak to them because of it, or deny their own kids grandparents.

My family is FOB and dresses like it and they annoy the hell out of me too. I was like "OMG Pete Wentz, eyeliner is for girls! Seriously though, your cousin won't let your aunt see her daughter because of a headscarf? That's really lovely and extreme regardless of your views on assimilation.

If the son's 43 i'm assuming your aunt is over 60, are you really expecting her to get a driving licence, change her garderobe, drop her accent and her ways because you're embarassed by your heritage ?
