Welcome to Mechfishing PDQ (beta)! This is a recruitment/discussion thread to playtest the rules that I am currently working on for the PDQ Vehicles system.

If you haven't heard of Mechfishing yet, there is actually a website with useful information about it now that I made in the course of working on this stuff:

http://mechfishing.wikispaces.com

The following below will basically outline several key points that this particular game and its recruitment are looking for.

Playtesting Focus

Currently the majority of the actual "rules" that are written up for Mechfishing have to be properly balanced to see how people are using their Fuel and Octane. Currently, Redline and Threshold are still not properly defined (they may never be past their current incarnation except for clarification); the most important thing to be playtested is Fuel/Octane. Everything else is basically just stock PDQ so no real balancing is actually necessary.

Character Creation

Standard character creation as defined by the rules listed in the URL above. Creation rules are as standard PDQ: 8 ranks in Qualities, and 2 ranks in Flaws. Aside from that, there are also special considerations:

* You must be a Wandering Fisherman or a Community Fisherman.
* You must have a vehicle suitable for catching fish.

In addition to creating your character with the caveats above, you will also need to create your Giant Robot that you'll be fuckin' poo poo up with. A description regarding that is found here:

http://mechfishing.wikispaces.com/VehicleCreation

Please note you get some vehicle-related stunts for free. Go hog-wild; there is no hard limit on what you can do except what's listed there.

Setting

We will be using the Mechfishing setting, which has been somewhat described in previous times and also on the wikispace itself (see sidebar: Mechfishing). This means that the tone and flavor of this game is similar to the previous games, but in much more bite-sized chunks.

Questions, Comments, Concerns

#fishinghard on synIRC, or #partyhard, use my nick to highlight me, or just ask about Mechfishing and people will point you in the right direction. In addition, you can contact me by any of the other usual methods or post here in the thread. Remember that because this is a playtest the more discussion that is generated the better, and any things that need to be addressed will be thrown up into this thread regardless of the wishes of the person who brings it up (if it's that big of a problem they will be anonymous when I am quoting their stuff).

I think I might go with the same basic archetype I did last time characterwise, that being grumpy old guy.

Randy Hopkins

[+2] Community Fisherman
Randy has lived within the boundaries of the Beernegat Bay Authorized Settlement District for most of his life. A regular at Salty Steve's, Randy is fairly well known, being one of the few Mechfishers that still lives in the area. In his mid-20's, Randy doesn't have quite the experience of Jonathan Farmer, whose memorial statue is in the center of Dolph's market. On the other hand, he's still alive. Swimming and piloting his mech throughout the Bay and the surrounding seas for years and yeas has given him deep instinctive knowledge of the area. Randy knows the waters of the BBASD better than anyone else, and he knows the streets pretty darn well too. Protip: don't eat at Joe's.

[+4] Fish Surfer
Randy's mech is equipped with a surfboard, which allows excellent movement and agility. It's not the easiest thing to use, but he makes it look that way. It also allows him to stay in position with even the toughest fish. By getting his Line onto the fish, Randy can ride out any currents or evasive maneuvers the fish takes, and reeling himself in. Once he gets onto the fish, Randy can lock his legs into the fish's scales (usually) and surf the fish itself, often being able to control it in a manner that's beneficial to the team as a whole. When this doesn't work, it tends to look hilarious on the after-action reports. So far, it's worked quite a bit more often than not. The fact that Randy's still alive can attest to this.

[+2] Goes with the Flow
When you're surfing, you can make some moves, and even do some tricks, but you've got to ultimately take what the ocean throws at you. That's how Randy deals with people, too. He'll say some things, smile, drink some beers, smoke some seaweed, but you'll never really notice him. He blends in, and is happy in any company. At least, that's how he makes it look.

[-2] Homeboy
Randy loves Beernegat Bay, and for all his knowledge of it, doesn't know much else about the world, and frankly, he might not really care. It remains to be seen whether or not his love of Mechfishing will outweigh his love for home. Also, please do not insult the District.

Bungee

[+0] Stock Torso
Notable parts: Grahl Systems 429-P reactor core; TNZ HH power conduit systems; Grahl Systems Class 5 myomer actuators; MechTeck, Inc. Tel-2.1 computer processor (SOCKEYE 4.0.43a with KPE Heads-Up Display); Romulus and Jenkins CHB2M armor. Nothing particularly notable, although it's served Randy well enough. He's definitely looking to upgrade the armor, though. The CHB2M system is about eighty or ninety years out of date, but anything newer tends to be really expensive.

[+4] Military-Grade Arms
Notable Parts: Ulysses Technologies OmniStrong shoulder mounts; HyperDynamics DRT-71 supertension cable launchers with scale-piercing heads; Dextr0 Mk VII hand units. The key part here is the pair of DRT-71s, one on each forearm of Bungee. Using these, Randy is able to solidly grab a hold of fish and let himself be pulled along - the foundation of his Fish Surfing technique. The DRT-71s don't really hurt the fish (although Randy once killed a one-bell by shooting it in the eyeballs), but they are capable of penetrating any known fish scale and lodging well-nigh permanently. The cables can be released at any point by plasma cutters at the launching mechanism, at which point new heads are fused onto the cable.

[+4] Military-Grade Legs
Notable Parts: ZeWorks Customized Surfboard; Grahl Systems XHARM boosters; L'Indi National knee, hip, and ankle stabilizers (Part Nos. 33FXK, 33FXH, 33FXA respectively); Monorocket EP-99 explosive bolts; Black Dahlia Sx1 short grapple hooks. The surfboard is an integral part of the functioning of Bungee. When it is not in use, during the second phase of a fishing excursion, it mechanically and magnetically locks to the back of the mech. When Randy transfers into the second part of the mission, the explosive bolts fire and the grapples lock themselves into the fish scale, allowing him to surf the fish without (too much) fear of falling off. The boosters allow a very high top speed and excellent response rate, allowing Randy to compensate for sudden movements while surfing a fish.

STUNT: [+4] Trickin'
It's not easy to transfer from a surfboard to a fish, but Randy's done it enough times that he knows quite well what's going on, and sometimes, he can't resist a bit of flair when mounting a fish, or mounting a wave. For some reason, doing things all flashy-like often seemed to work better than by-the-book methods (for as much as there is a Mechfishin' book).

ּDE PDQ!

Curtis Lee Nicholson

Expert [+4] Robotics Engineering
Curtis has worked for the better part of his life as an engineerings technician, read: mech jockey. As a kid he worked in his pop's shop, during his militairy career he did mech and boat repairs, and when he settled a little, he started his own shop as well. His work mostly entailed doing patch work on fishing mechas after a one- or two-bell fish was caught (read: killed stone cold dead), though he found himself often in the employ to do custom work for his shop's clientele. Picking up on that knowledge, he has expanded it into proper mech design. He's hardly schooled, most of his knowledge stemming from experience, lots of free tooling, and what he has picked up from those that have had the proper training back in the navy.

Good [+2] Deep Diver
Piloting robots of all sorts requires a steady hand, and an almost intimate knowledge of the capabilities and (perhaps more importantly) the limits of any given machine. Curtis' driven a lot, and knows how to use a system in practice, pushing them to the limit for the deepest pursuit.

Good [+2] Nerves of Steel
Say whatever you want about Curtis, but he's got guts. He fears very little, given his style of fishing and incapacitating, and knows how to back himself up when the going gets tough. Seriously, this guy gets eaten by three-bells for a living and lives to tell the tale.

Poor [-2] Rumours of the Wandering Fisherman
After the destruction of the Florida floatilla in a massive tidal sinkhole (probably the result of the destruction of several megafish in the area), Curtis bailed ship and left. He had his reasons, mostly because most of his family and his very life had been wiped out in the cataclysm. He saw no reason to stick around where he knew he'd be hurting the most. But rumours flock easily around a man leaving a distraught and destroyed community that could be counting on him for its renewal. He never quite is able to shrug the words off.

S.X. Orca

Performance-grade [+2] Frame
The Submersible eXcavator, type Orca, is a commercial submersible craft used to dig into the earth undersea. Its heavy-duty Greifswald Industries frame can withstand heavy outside pressure, and comes with five modular sockets providing hardpoints for a broad manner of industrial and militairy grade tools and weapon systems (besides a few Austra-Asian systems due to competitor rivalry, but Curtis hardly uses that kind of junk). Its flexible armored body houses several more regular systems, most notedly a Messinger fusion core, type A32, a Huston Robotics 12-series gyroscope array, a specialized custom ventilation rigging along the dorsal section of the Orca of his own design embedded in one of the sockets, Greifswald hypertension-resistant actonite cables along the entire frame for movement, and a MechTech Tel-2.0 processor (thankfully with up-to-date SOCKEYE communication systems).

Performance-grade [+2] Plating
The Orca's hull and limbs have been reinforced with militairy surplus armor plating used in the construction of Titan-class submersible fortresses. On a relatively 'dinky' Orca, this merely translates to better-than-average endurance versus most weapon systems, though it more than suffices in keeping the Orca's inner systems and its muscular cables protected from most harm through a combination of hydrodynamically bolted tryomer steel and honeycomb-like alluminar plates.

Militairy-grade [+4] Propulsion
The Orca really shines in its mobility. Combining the flexibility of a Greifswald 'tail' with the propulsion provided by two Grampus-class diving legs (Huston Robotics), along with the general hydrodynamic build of the Orca, Curtis' rig cleaves through the water like a hot knife through butter. Even when breaching ocean waters does the Orca retain most of its speed before it submerges again. Though its frame is not meant for incursions on land, its leg systems combined with an extended, swaying tail allow the Orca to at the least dock where-ever, above or under the sea.

STUNT/WEAPON: [+4] Fusion Cutters
The last two modular sockets are armed with a combination of fuel containers and weaponized fusion cutting 'drills', made by Boston Dynamics, Inc, a daughter corp of Greifswald Industries. On constructors like the Orca, they're meant to penetrate the hardest of rock without a hitch, cutting down to make deep shafts into the earth, or to provide the basis of a suitable hardpoint for any undersea construction effort. Now, imagine the cutters sinking just as deep into a fish. Curtis' Orca is built to endure a fish, and either breach it from outside... or in.

Sannakji

[+4] Multitasker
Controlling twice as many limbs as a hominid would be no easy task, if Sannakji did not have a brain developed for handling such an occasion. With precision, all eight of his tentacles can reach out to manipulate objects as well as a human hand, or team up for even better control. Handy in many applications, this proves especially useful in the piloting of a mech, as it makes him able to simultaneously manipulate many controls at once.

[+2] Fish Out of Water
As a mutant octopus, Sannakji is lucky enough to have most of the physical traits of a Cephalopod, including suction cups for gripping and climbing, no phsyical skeleton to hinder him slipping into tight spaces, a sharp beak, gills, a lifetime supply of ink, and three hearts, not to mention the obvious tentacles. He was also fortunate enough to have his mutation enhance his already advanced intelligence, particularly in areas of language, and thicken his skin, letting him survive extended periods out of water.

[+2] Wandering Fisherman
As far as he knows, Sannakji is the only one of his kind, although it is entirely possible that there are others. This uniqueness has given him a reputation, enhanced by his honorable and sometimes altruistic behavior. More often than not, his services are regarded highly and recognized as worth their price tag.

[-2] Kill the Mutie!
Unfortunately, some people just can't get it through their heads that advanced octopus mutants are people too. This makes certain social situations difficult to begin with, and gives already distrusting people an excuse to be outright angry with Sannakji. Even disguises are unlikely to help, as if the huge head and tentacles could be hidden, the smell of ink and fish follows him everywhere.

MMC-2520A Crustacean Weapons Platform, "Mudcrab"

[+4] Military-Grade Arms
Despite their limited use as manipulators, the MMC-2520A's two massive crab-clawed arms provide tremendous crushing and gripping power. If needed, one can be replaced with a smaller claw, more useful as a fine manipulator (this configuration is known as the "Fiddler" variant).

[+4] Military-Grade Legs
The lower body of the Mudcrab is a large, flat area, resembling the shell of a crab. This provides the housing for its numerous weapons systems, six legs, its power plant, and a low-powered gravity repulsion field generator to deter its sharp-tipped legs from getting stuck in mud and sand. Its large surface area and the gravity field also allow it to skim on the surface of the water.

[+0] Stock Torso
The Mudcrab's humanoid torso mainly serves as a platform for its sensors and arms. Despite being mostly unarmored, it is somewhat resilient to damage thanks to being made of massive bundles of carbon nanotube muscles that lend their strength to the claws and keeping the two halves in one piece when it is tearing armor, or a giga-tuna, apart. The pilot's compartment is deep within these bundles, near where the upper and lower torsos meet, and not in the head, which houses the sensor arrays.

Stunt: [+4] Broadside
In a standard application, the Mudcrab has over a dozen conventional cannons, rail guns, and particle beam weapons built into its lower body, making it a powerful weapons platform. Sannakji, over the course of his fishing career, has replaced them with a more task appropriate assortment of sonic stunners, explosive bomb-lance harpoons, and line launchers. The weapons are mounted in such a way that they can all be brought to bear on a single target with impressive results.

Alrighty here's my first try at a mechfishin dude, hope it all works!

Old Ray 'The Turtle' Turtleson

[+2] Wandering Fisherman: No one really knows when Ray became a wanderer, the stories go from his entire town being wiped out by a Rating 5 megafish, to him simply one day getting up and leaving town without a word. In truth, he was once part of a small group of 'big game' fishers in the Great White North in his younger days. They were good, drat good, but one day they got cocky, went after too big a fish with not enough of a plan. Next thing the town knows, Ray washes up in a half eaten robot, the rest of the team lost to the sea. Ever since then he wandered, consumed by survivor's guilt. He takes odd fishing jobs now and works in whatever port will take him.

[+2] The Goddamn Turtle: Living up to his last name, Ray has mastered what he calls "Turtle Style" fishing. He isn't a heavy hitter, but rather he knows how to move his robot to take damage well. Those whippersnappers may do it flashier, and with bigger weapons, but no one takes a fin to the jaw like Old Ray.

[+4] Old Salt: He's been around the block a bit. He's no legendary fisher, but he's been in the game for a good long while, short of the real bad rear end fish, Ray is hard to surprise. He knows oceans, he knows fish, and most of all he knows his robot. He may hack and wheeze, but he's still alive by virtue of his experiences.

[-2] I Fish Better When I Drink!: Ever since he started wandering (most likely because of why he started wandering), Old Ray has been drinking. He's never gotten sloppy because of it, but the bottle tends to call to him right before a trip, giving him a rather bad reputation as a drunk in most towns. He's fun to drink with, but most sea goin types are wary of being around him in a fish run.

X-299 Automaton Class Giant Robot: "Shelly"

[+4] Military-Grade Torso: The focal point of "Shelly", her military grade body, made of salvaged and repurchased submarine and battleship scrap. Even though It would appear her shell was the major armored part, in fact the armor is quite evenly distributed. This is also where Old Ray's control bridge is, hence the extra attention to quality and safety in it.

[+2] Performance-Grade Arms: Spindly, but powerful, his arms are reinforced with massive internal armor and pressure systems to provide a strong grip and hard strikes on a fish. Along with that, the arms have been designed to aid the legs in propulsion, mimicking the turtle it was designed after as it moves.

[+2] Performance-Grade Legs: The primary propulsion system for the robot, the legs were built in the same methood as the arms, but built with specialty vents on the soles of the feet to vent high pressure out, good for quick bursts of speed, as well as aiding the robot's stunt maneuver.

Stunt: [+4] Shell Shock: The robot retracts into the shell into special grooves and slots, leaving only the enforced torso as a target for the fish, as well as boosting the natural armor with the additional metal. A highly defensive position to be in, as well as able to vent pressure much like the legs do to propel it at high speeds as a potent offensive weapon. Old Ray loves using this to 'brain' a fish, letting it tire out trying to eat the shell that hit it as the other fishers work it over. A dangerous tactic, but effective.

「今、楽にしてやるぜ!」

FISHER

Name: Hershel Bowers
Birthplace: Neo Britannia, District 77

Hershel with his cat Jeremiah

[+4] Expert: Junkman - A youth spent growing up in the lower class areas of the eastern Great Atlantic means that Bowers knows how to make use of what he can get, be it food, parts, or shelter. His particular little sector of Neo Britannia very rarely could afford to hire wandering fishermen, and they often only got the scraps that the big government dogs dragged in. Because of this, Bowers got used to conserving and utilizing every bit of whatever he gets. He's loathe to throw anything away, and the Re:Home is filled with odd bits and ends. Because of this, he's also quite able to turn junked parts he's bought at a discount into functioning equipment again, give or take a few odd tics here and there. For example, the Re:Home was constructed out of the framework of an old Lessette class deep submersible cruiser, and all the functions not native to it were installed by Bowers himself over the decades he's owned the ship. On top of that, he build the majority of his primary mech Astray himself, which means he knows just how to coax her into doing what he wants. He's not the best pilot, but he makes up for it with decades of experience and sheer knowledge about his machines.

[+2] Good: Tough Old Bastard - Bowers has quite the "gently caress you, I ain't dead yet" attitude. More than once he's stood up after a punch to the jaw that'd knock down a younger fellow, and more than once he's been the only fisher to drag back a catch. Or to come back at all, with half of the Re:Home missing and the Astray down a leg and an arm. Even if the Astray or Re:Home suffers critical damage in the middle of a fight, he'll be reluctant to pull back if there's still other fishers alive and in harms way.

[+2] Good: Wanderer Fisherman - Ever since he managed to get out of District 77 of Neo Britannia, Bowers hasn't seen fit to settle down anywhere he's been, even after drat near 30 years roaming the seas and fishing. Doing that tends to teach a man how to be friendly enough to not grate on most people's nerves, and while he hasn't formed any major bonds, he knows people in virtually every major fishing area and a whole smattering of smaller communities around the world. Sure, they might not leap to his rescue if he's in trouble, but if he ends up passing through again he can likely count on at least a hot meal and a few glasses of booze before he moves on out again. On top of that, it's given him lots of experience with all manner and types of fish, customs, and machines.

[-2] Poor: Old Age - Hershel is not a spry young whippersnapper anymore. He's getting on drat near 60 years, and it's starting to show on him. He's having a bit of trouble lifting parts, it's hard to stay up all night working, and some days there's just no way to put off that noontime nap in the sun on top of Re:Home as it floats lazily on its way between towns.

MECHA

Name: Astray

[+2] Performance Grade Torso: The Astray may be built out of a multitude of various junked parts, but Bowers' expertise has allowed him to combine all manner of systems and parts together to get the most out of them he can. It contains systems and components ranging from a top of the line Mythtek UNICORN interface, to ancient pockets of CHBHM 30 armor layered end over end to nearly match up to modern milspec armors. The Astray's torso is an all around above-average part, consisting of sturdy armor, detailed sensors, and high end computer systems to help manage the multitude of hacked together bits she has. The head itself contains many of the more high-end sensors on the mecha, as well as a simple pair of dual linked CIWS guns to attempt interceptions on incoming munitions from pirates, or to tickle the larger fishies.

[+2] Performance Grade Arms: Much like the core torso of the Astray, the arms are a hodgepodge of ancient and new, somehow twisted and jerryrigged enough that they all play a nice tune together. While alone they're not the strongest myomer system around, they're quite above average and more than able to handle the simple weapons the base Astray frame has, consisting of two customized fusion cutters that use magnetic containment tweaks to reach the size of a sword instead of a tiny jet (at the expense of cutting power), two simple short range electron pulse detonator systems in the palms of the hands, and a solid state magnetic coated GRBER 5M Single Edge Blade, holstered around the hip. The magnetic coatings help keep the bastard sharp, and more than once it's helped keep the Astray lodged tight in a fish while it beat the drat thing to death. Finally, it has a set of VALKYRIE rocket harpoons mounted along the wrist of each arm, which are two rocket propelled lances that it can launch into a target, then using the high-tension wires and motors to either drag it back towards the Astray, or more frequently, reel the Astray in towards the poor bastard.

[+0] Stock Legs: Bowers has skimped a tad on the legs and propulsion systems of the Astray, due to the fact they're rendered somewhat moot due to his variety of modular sets. Consisting mostly of older parts such as E7 Myonomer bundles, Lunatanium titanium armor plating, and relatively ancient chemical detonation boosters, the Astray in its basic configuration can do only the basics of running, jumping, and kicking.

NAME: Re:Home

[+4] Military-Grade Wildcard Expansion Re:Home: While the Astray may be near and dear to Bowers as the mech he built himself from scraps and the one he used to set out from District 77 in, the Re:Home is his true pride and joy. While many wandering mechfishers have a 'tacklebox' to store spare parts and replacements in, Hershel Bowers has taken that concept to the extreme. Not just a storage unit for spare parts, the Re:Home is a full on converted Lessette deep submersible frame which he acquired several years after he started wandering, as payment for a job. Dwarfing many tackleboxes, and the mecha that they service, it's a full on home for Bowers and the Astray. Cargo bays contain the massive amount of spare parts, modular units, and even other mecha that may belong to fishers traveling with him. Living quarters fit (if somewhat cramped) for several people, a kitchen and rec area to match. While she's only lightly armored in her natural form, there are several grasper arms more than capable of flinging debris and grabbing mechs, and the AI "EX-S" is more than capable of calculating ballistic arcs so they land on fish or the pirate ships that launched them.

NAME: Re:Astray

His true pride however, lays in the massive full scale convert system he's hand built over the decades. Using it, the Re:Home is able to eject the cargo bays and living quarters (contained in nigh impenetrable layers of ceramasteel, lunatitanium, and chobham armors, which have yet to meet a sea bed they couldn't handle sitting on and eventually boost or be dredged back up to rejoin the ship) and then transform into a massive mobile docking armor for the Astray unit, easily increasing its combat potential by several levels. The transformation takes less than a minute to finish, due to the high speed motors involved and the efficient layout of the Re:Home. In this form, the Astray sits atop a "seat" at the head of the mecha, arms, legs, and torso integrated with the Re:Home's AI and control systems. The Astray is able to dock with the Re:Home to form the Re:Astray whether or not the Astray itself is inside the Re:Home at the time. If it is the system fails to eject its cargo bay, instead shifting it to the docking point. If it's currently deployed, the cargo bay shifts itself and opens, allowing the Astray to dock with it. Despite the form's massive size, it's still relatively maneuverable, able to match the base Astray in speed (thought not raw maneuverability), while the immense layers of armor and engine systems give it a fairly sizable boost in staying power and attack strength. Packing two massive grasper claws on the end of the arms, it's able to crush through a fish's armor and latch on, pounding away at it with the piledrivers mounted in the base of the graspers. Several smaller point defense guns are layered around the frame for projectile interception, and the graspers themselves are mounted on chemical rocket thrusters capable of propelling them nearly a mile away before the super high tension carbon nanotube reels run out of wire, rapidly retracting them, or dragging the Re:Astray toward whatever they've hooked on. It also mounts several high powered drivers in the legs to anchor it down to a fish once it's made contact, so that it can beat the poo poo out of it in the process. The downsides are that while in the Re:Astray form, the Astray itself is still relatively exposed, a simple system of bars and restraint devices helping to keep it solidly docked. This essentially means that the Re:Astray is unusable against intelligent opponents such as pirates, due to the fact that they can easily snipe the Astray itself.

STUNTS

[+2] Going Astray: Utilizing the Astray's telemetry and EX-S's control of the Re:Home, the Astray can attempt to call down the thunder upon a fish it's currently locked onto. Essentially, it broadcasts where the gently caress it is, and EX-S transforms the Re:Home into Re:Astray mode, utilizing the beacon that Astray provides to either launch the rocket grapples, or to simply ram into the fish as it scoots by. Either way, the outcome is that the Re:Astray is prepared for docking and relatively nearby, assuming the maneuver was successful. Utilized against smaller fish, or pirate flagships from underneath, it's proven useful several times.

[+2] RIP AND TEAR: The Re:Astray is strong. Very strong. If the legs have been secured down to a target, the graspers don't need to worry about holding, and Bowers and his baby can go all out on the poor son of a bitch on the receiving end. Able to tear off chunks of scales or armor, crush flesh and machinery, or simply rip and tear and beat the poo poo out of whatever it's locked on to, the Re:Astray is generally guaranteed to do some level of damage to the poor sucker.

If having the Re:Home and Re:Astray part of the same [+4] is an issue, I'll split them into two [+2]s, if that's okay.

Call Me Ishmael

Wandering Harpooner [+4]
Ever since the White Salmon came, Ishmael has been a wanderer. Not by choice, no, but because his prey covers such a large territory. He's seen most of the Pacific and Atlantic Rims in skips and jumps -- Peru one day, Morocco the next -- all in pursuit of his elusive and deadly prey.

Split Your Lungs With Blood And Thunder! [+2]
Ishmael, among other things, has quite the set of lungs on him. It's pretty useful, really, for anything from shouting warnings to haggling someone down a few notches on the price of a part.

Badass Cripple [+2]
He might be missing an arm with no real good replacement and have a half-assed peg leg, but that hasn't slowed him down a whit. Underestimate Ishmael at your own peril.

Vengance Is Mine, So Sayeth The Lord... [-2]
Ishamael has turned to religion as a coping mechanism. It levels him out somewhat, but on the other hand, it's sort of annoying when someone starts quoting their holy book to you at full bellow.

Second Pequod

The First Pequod was, some seven decades and change ago, a Mark VIII Pelican, fresh off the lines. It has since been passed down through the family, with all the modifications that entails: reinforced structure in the limbs, stronger arm psuedomusculature, hydrojets in the legs replacing the tread systems so on, so forth. After the White Salmon tore the First Pequod limb from limb, Ishmael had to carry on the family tradition of reassembling the thing basically from parts. Most of the mech is replacements, at this point -- the paint's mismatched where it isn't peeling, the hatches don't close fully, and cables jut out from the limbs, but for all that, it still keeps on keeping on.

The most radical replacement were the right leg and left arm -- they weren't broken so much as gone when Ishmael salvaged the First Pequod, so he bartered for whatever he could to replace them. What he got for the leg was a stake driver -- not much of a leggy thing, so far as legs went, but the ability to drive a long spike into whatever he was standing on has proven to be quite handy. The hand was a little trickier: Ishmael managed to patch together an upper arm from a junk heap, but everything from mid-forearm down was a total hackjob, cobbled together from a winch, a set of liquid-fuel boosters, and a steel loading hook.

Clarry

What's that ya say? You lookin' for a fisherman? Well, yeah, findin' one's easy enough, sure. But I can tell just by lookin' atcha that you're lookin' for someone different. Someone good. See that ugly motherfucker over there, sittin' at the bar? Yeah, the one with the scaly head? Yeah, that one's called Clarry (rhymes with Larry). No, none of us really know where he comes from. Depending on the time of day and his level of sobriety, he'll give ya a bunch of crazy-rear end stories, like how he's a space alien sent down to collect Earth fish, or he's an android programmed to take fish into himself. My personal favorite's the one where he was the testbed for special cybernetic implants that repairs flesh using saltwater, but it hosed up and messed up his skin, so now he has to sleep in brine. Well, anyway, he's the one I recommend out of this dump, he can pilot his mech like any drat thing, and his goin' rate's cheap, so there's that I guess.

[+4] Fish Talker Somehow, someway, the drat ugly sonofabitch can tell exactly what a fish is gonna do just by looking at it. He says it has something to do with "magnet waves" but he could just be talkin' out his rear end.

[+2] Water Affinity Fella fuckin' loves water. Can hold his breath drat near 20 minutes, I saw it once. He even drinks sea-water, makes his own moonshine out of it. Damned if any of us can figure out how.

[+2] Wandering Fisherman drat good fisher, though. Sticks to himself, mostly. Must not be one of them schoolin' fish! *laughs raggedly, elbows drinking partner*

[-2] Ugly as gently caress Dunno if he actually has scales or if his cybernetics just hosed up, but drat if he ain't hard to look at. Smells to high poo poo, too.

Marianas

[+0] Torso
[+2] Arms
---[+4]Grab 'n' Slam
- Grabs onto a fish (or whatever who cares) and pulls itself towards it, rearin' to give it a headbutt it'll never forget. I think it's got shutters or something on its head to give it extra oomph but I'm not sure. Go ask Cletus, he might know.
[+2] Legs
[+2] Grappling Hooks
- The Marianas' hands are connected to the arms by old, rusty-rear end chains (it's hard to see in the picture). Typical "grab far away poo poo, bring closer/get closer" poo poo.
[+2] Foot Claws - See those crazy feet? They can clamp down on a fish like a Nuclear Lamprey and not ever fuckin' let go. Crazy to see in action.

'Captain' Klaus Waffle

The Captain stole his boat from his dad (marooned him on an island), who stole it from a distant cousin, who stole it from a lover, who stole it from a drunk, who stole it from a warehouse, that once belonged to a major power. He's lived his life under the water-it's all he knows besides booze and women. But he loves those women. He hates everything else though, being on land away from his boat (somebody might steal it), and being stuck beneath the waves away from loose women.

Last time he came to port, he definately caught something nasty. He thinks it's from the one with three breasts.

+2 Combatant
The Captain loves to fight, and he loves to blast poo poo wide open. He's been doing it since he was a lad, and he knows all the tricks to blowing the gently caress out of giant fish and human raiders.

+4 Nautical Minded
Klaus has lived his life in the sea, he can read its currents and knows its tricks. He can memorize charts at a glance, and can tell the weather weeks in advance. He knows his boat inside and out, too.

+2 Wandering Fisherman
Klaus never stays put- he's too good and the people he meets are all incompetent morons. He's sure he's the best, and that they all want to steal his Betsy. But with a boat like his, he can charge a high price and afford good hookers.

-2 Overeager
Do you have any idea how boring it is when you aren't fishing? He lives in his loving submarine! He can't wait to get some action, and will sometimes screw up as a result.

M.P.A.T. 'Betsy The Boat'

Missile Platform All- Terrain, a hunk of hardware intended to deliver death from afar, stolen, modified, and passed down as a piece of fishing gear that anybody win their right mind would want to steal again.

+2 Performance Grade Body
Targeting systems, sensors, computers, and cooling galore. Plus a couple fine manipulators under the cockpit and a short-range forward-facing cutting laser. Throw in the apartment and ultra-long range communications array, and you've got a swinging bachelor pad.

+4 Military Grade Armor
A MPAT can withstand the crushing pressures of the ocean floor, or a near miss with most nuclear weapons, whichever the captain prefers to risk. Betsy can take hits that lesser mechs would crumple under. She can use her armored tail to try to club fish into submission, though it's preferred to use other, quicker, methods.

+0 Stock propulsion
Betsy's relatively puny little legs and dainty propellers would be performance-grade on most boats, but when you're as well-armored as The Boat, it takes a little more umph to really get moving. The legs can dig in for stability and the claws can tear things up if given enough time. They can also sometimes manage to manipulate standard mech weapons.

+2 Stealth Running
MPAT units are supposed to launch surprise attacks on well-prepared installations, and Betsy can so the same. You only know she's there if she wants you to, or if there's a flight of missiles headed your way.

+2 Tacklebox
Klaus and his predecessors have amassed an array of weaponry and tools to deal with many different types of fish. Some of them are secondhand tools barely usable by Betsy's underdeveloped arms, while others are super-specialized warheads and weapons for her only.

+2 +4 Stunt: Missiles Away! (Tied to Performance Body)
Betsy can fire a salvo of up to eight homing missile/torpedoes of that can travel through water or air at a time. The warheads can be switched in only a few seconds, allowing Klaus to choose from nets, neurotoxins, bunker-busters, ink clouds, eletctroshockers, high-explosive, 2-part epoxies, strong corrosive agents, and cluster munitions. Unlike most MPATs, Betsy can fire while moving, for example after having been batted around by a giant fish, thanks to her upgraded targeting computers. Reloading the launch tubes takes a little under a minute.

I will be working most of the day Black Friday at a Best Buy. Luckily I will just be there for minor janitorial duties like replacing toilet paper as it runs out, but the day may still go badly! Couple that with relative visiting on Thanksgiving and I might be unavailable from Thursday till Sunday. vv

Also I need a better name for PDQ Vehicles. Winner gets a secret prize.

The Great Northern Whiptrout are one of the few domestic-able megafish, and are raised because of their calm tendencies and tasty meat, just like ancient turkeys. Also, just as likely to drown in the rain, oddly enough.

And it should be called "Bumper to Bumper"
