Ok, so I want to be able to climb a 5 meter rope, straight up, using just my arms eventually. I know that in the beginning I will probably have to use my legs a bit, but that is my end goal. I do alot of pulldowns when at the gym, as well as front-hand pullups everyday, but I'm not really sure which exercises could stimulate the same muscle groups that would be used when doing this rope climb. I had considered taking two of the metal handgrips from the cable machines, and putting them in the same clip on one of the pulldown machines, but I'm not sure really. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to rig up this rope to hang from somewhere around my yard, so that I can practice a bit everyday. I am still trying to figure out if I will have to have a pole installed in my yard or something, and then buy the rope (or maybe there's a kit I'm not aware of). If anyone has any ideas about the exercises that would simulate, or where I could get such equipment, please let me know here.

I would guess that more pullups are your best bet. Once you can do 10-15 or something start weighted pullups.

Do towel pullups. It will work your grip and your pulling ability simultaneously.

towel pull ups are supposed to be a good simulation of rope climbing - at least according to this : http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/faq.html#Substitutions0 *edit* beaten so hard!

Since much of rope climbing is grip-dependent, I'd recommend Cable Rollers, Wrist Curls, and General Pronation Excercises as supplementary workouts.

http://www.roguefitness.com/store/climbing_ropes.php These already have an eyelet on the end of the rope so if you have a tree or some sort of overhead beam they are easy to hang.
