There doesn't seem to be a desktop thread in the Computer forum, just a laptop thread and a thread for building desktops, so I figured this may be the best place..

Basically, my laptop of old is dead and deceased, almost. It's hanging by a thread, nearly 5 years old. I'm looking for a desktop to serve me well for the next few years (not trying to future proof it). I would go with a laptop+monitor combination, but I need to run the computer as a media server for my home for my 360's all the way down to my iPhone and it seems like a laptop would be worst for leaving on 24/7, every day of the week.

Here's details to consider:

- I'm not a PC gamer. So, that's not even a matter to me.
- I need to be able to have enough power to do most multimedia things whether it's streaming HD content to my 360, mid-level video editing, or high resolution work in photoshop.
- Needs to be able to run Windows 7 perfectly.
- I have an Onkyo 7.1 sound system that will be hooked up to it, so I would like to have a great audio card.
- Got a budget of up to $500.

I've picked out this monitor:

LG W2243T-PF Black 21.5" 5ms GTG Full HD 1080P LCD Monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16824005123
$149.95

Feel free to lead me in the right direction if there is a better deal out there.

Basically, I used to be more up to date on all of this info a few years back, but I've big time fallen out of the loop, especially when it comes to things like Quad Core processors and etc. I'm likely to just buy something from Office Depot or Best Buy, so that's why, instead, I'm trying to reach out to you guys first.

So I don't get screwed . I buy a computer about once every 4-5 years, so I need to optimize my purchase as much as possible! I was looking at stuff on newegg.com, but that's when my lack of knowledge started coming into play..

So you have a $351 budget? I'm not really sure how realistic this is. Do you want to build your own, or buy a lovely OEM like a Dell?

I rule!

I don't get it. You know there's a "computer forum" and looked to see if there was a thread for your question, which is good, better than most people, but then upon seeing there wasn't a specific thread for pre-built systems, you then left the "computer forum" and came here. Weird.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter, because all sub $500 pre-builts that you buy in a big box are going to be the same poo poo, and I emphasize poo poo. Now, if you are counting the full $500 for just the system and not the monitor, you're in a little better shape, but you'd still be better off learning how to build your own if you really want the most for your money.

Yeah, any prebuilt computer you are going to get for $350 is going to be a massive piece of poo poo. Unless you want a nettop like this one.

Yeah, monitor is not part of that $500 budget. That's separate, so I'm spending ~$650 on the whole package.

Well, when it comes to this kind of stuff at SA, it seems either you get ridiculed or put on probation for posting the wrong things in the wrong places, so I came here...yeah, maybe not the best decision but I didn't know where to post this :/

EDIT: Actually, I'm going to just post this in the computer forum.
