After years of lurking i've never seen any decent threads on these genres. I'm sure there are a few of you goons into this stuff so lets get it going.

To start off:

You know, I've got a funny feeling I've seen this all before.

Well Mazzy Star were shoegazey at times but they're really best known for slow alternative pop ballads so it's arguably a bit misleading to post a song that exemplifies the latter and then call them a "shoegaze" band.

In terms of actual shoegaze music you could do a fair bit better than Mazzy Star, which is why it wasn't what they were popular for.

Someone putting Shoegaze after 7 other more appropriate terms on their wikipedia page doesn't necessarily make it a great descriptor of their work.

Let's talk about modern bands who are doing this music! Not that I don't agree that Souvlaki was created by Jesus Christ himself as a gift to humanity, but you know, let's get present-tense:

Blonde Redhead - 23

If you like shoegaze you've probably heard the album already, was released in 2007 I think but if you haven't then definitely check it out.

I don't agree with the hype the new Horrors release got. It was supposed to be a big leap for them but while a few of the songs are kind of good it's still pretty damned formulaic and not that good in a lot of places.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to check out the recent APTBS and Asobi Seksu releases, unfortunately what I've heard of the latter doesn't match up to citrus

Different strokes etc. about the Horrors, though I admit it is a formulaic album. The "big leap" most people talk about is how they were kind of a lovely glam-punk act who put more effort into their hair than their first album, and now they're trying harder.

And yes, sad but true, the new Asobi Seksu is just not very good. I try and listen to it and it just kind of breezes past without ever doing anything interesting, which is very strange because their live show is extremely loud, energetic and kickass. I'm not sure what they're going for with their albums, where the shredding guitar is toned way down or, on most of the new album, barely even there. It's weird.

So tonight I'm gonna party like its 1066!

The Black Angels are pretty cool. They almost sound like a QOTSA minus the "oomph" to me, though.

I love post-punk, but I'm not too up on the current stuff, aside from the Joy Division-lite bands like White Lies (whom I like), etc.

That said, my favorite "post-punk" bands are probably Joy Division and Magazine.

Everybody knows Joy Division, but I think Magazine has remained under the radar, somewhat. Their guitarist, John McGeoch, was one of my favorites. He also played in Public Image Ltd. and Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well. I'd consider him a fairly important component to the sound of the genre.

Magazine - Shot by Both Sides
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybUqM8jf3mU

Magazine - A Song from Under the Floorboards
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p58kCYsiwt0

The band recently reformed without McGeoch, as he passed away a fear years back, sadly.

Magazine - Sweetheart Contract (live, 2009)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX7io5zhlYg

I love two things about the above video:

1)It's great to see the old Yamaha SBG guitar being played here, as it was a very popular model during the early post-punk period. I believe McGeoch used one during the Magazine days, too.
2)The girl singing backups with Howard Devoto. Will you marry me, post-punk lady?

Post-Punk and not shoegaze: The Birthday Party

A young Nick Cave, manic and raving

Was an acquired taste for me, except for Release the Bats, which is the song that convinced me to acquire a taste for The Birthday Party

A little on the heavier side, Loop and its associated spin-off bands, Main, Hair & Skin Trading Co,., etc are all awesome shoegazy drone rock...great stuff.... Robert Hampson went on to play with Godflesh later on

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBw81-GnbHg

And shifting over more to post-punk, for lack of a better word, how can you leave out two of the most ground breaking bands from that era? Wire and This Heat?? Both so far ahead of their time....

Holy crap. Several years ago I had a girlfriend who loved that band and made me listen to them, and they were absolutely horrible sub-Bright Eyes pansy Jesus rock. When the hell did they decide to become the next Interpol?

Not sure why Magazine are overlooked, but they're good. Shot by both sides is a classic.

As far as Public Image Limited is concerned I've only listened to their first two albums(First Issue and Metalbox), so I'm not familiar with McGeochs work with it - so I'll check it out.

I'd only heard of these two bands on your list, but I really like Crystal Stilts. Departure is very good. It's nice to see modern bands doing this kind of stuff. In Auckland there's a surge of bands playing similar post-punk influenced music and it's good(is this a trend globally?).

It's been a trend at least since Interpol's first album. It's actually a bit scary how many good new post-punk bands are coming out.

As far as Public Image Limited, you really don't want to go much further than their first two albums. After that, they got pretty poppy (though some of it was still quite good, like "Rise", probably their best known song). Then somewhere around '91 they tried to be grungy/heavy and it was honestly pretty bad.

Really, I'd just pick up The Greatest Hits... So Far and leave it at that.
