Sorry, admins. I originally posted this in the Ask/Tell thread because I didn't know where to post it. I didn't see a prebuilt PC thread in this forum. But, anyways.. Basically, my laptop of old is dead and deceased, almost. It's hanging by a thread, nearly 5 years old. I'm looking for a desktop to serve me well for the next few years (not trying to future proof it). I would go with a laptop+monitor combination, but I need to run the computer as a media server for my home for my 360's all the way down to my iPhone and it seems like a laptop would be worst for leaving on 24/7, every day of the week. Here's details to consider: - I'm not a PC gamer. So, that's not even a matter to me. - I need to be able to have enough power to do most multimedia things whether it's streaming HD content to my 360, mid-level video editing, or high resolution work in photoshop. - Needs to be able to run Windows 7 perfectly. - I have an Onkyo 7.1 sound system that will be hooked up to it, so I would like to have a great audio card. - Got a budget of up to $500. I've picked out this monitor: LG W2243T-PF Black 21.5" 5ms GTG Full HD 1080P LCD Monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16824005123 $149.95 Feel free to lead me in the right direction if there is a better deal out there. Basically, I used to be more up to date on all of this info a few years back, but I've big time fallen out of the loop, especially when it comes to things like Quad Core processors and etc. I'm likely to just buy something from Office Depot or Best Buy, so that's why, instead, I'm trying to reach out to you guys first. So I don't get screwed . I buy a computer about once every 4-5 years, so I need to optimize my purchase as much as possible! I was looking at stuff on newegg.com, but that's when my lack of knowledge started coming into play.. Monitor is not part of the $500 budget. I'm trying to do the best I can for a COMPLETE system ~$650

Any crap you buy will be able to do what you want. You can get a Gigabyte G31M-ES2L with the cheapest intel processor possible and you will be fine. With the extra money you can get 4 gigs of RAM, an SSD for your boot disk, and a gigantic media drive. You don't need a good sound card because nearly every motherboard these days has SPDIF out. If for some reason you feel you need something more modern just look at the Parts Picking guide like you should have in the first place.

Good place to start might be with the Sempron 140 and GA-MA785GM-US2H motherboard. There is a combo on newegg, get them together on newegg for 96$ I think. The sempron will unlock using ACC to a Athlon II x2 processor. After that less than 100$ for ram and another 120$ or so for case+PS.

I don't think you guys read the "prebuilt" in the topic before you suggested something for this guy. Dell had a pretty amazing deal on Inspiron 530n's about a year ago for around $500, but it still required a graphics card upgrade to make a fairly decent gaming PC, I don't know if Dell has anything similar or not now.

A Dell Inspiron 546 matching those newegg specs is under $450, just get one of those.

I've been thinking about getting one of these: $500 Gateway SX2802-03 $450 Gateway SX2800-03 I'm thinking of using one as an HTPC and then add a CableCard tuner to replace my Tivo. Only problem I see for you is that it doesn't have a DVI port (just VGA and HDMI), so you may want to get a cheap low-profile video card.

So, just so happens Staples has that computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16883147032 On sale for $450 this week, so I snatched it up. Between that, a monitor, and a surge protector w/ a battery, it came out to be around $760 after tax, but oh well. I really appreciate all of the help!
