I recently declared my major after almost three semesters of college. And it seems that I'm majoring in political science with a minor in management. Of course, now I'm getting questions from family and friends along the lines of "what are you going to do after school?" Well, if I knew that, I would have declared a major sooner. (If you never went to college, then this topic probably isn't for you)

I've finally decided on majoring in Cognitive Science after two years of dicking around and being a utter failure. Can't decide if I want to minor in Computer Science or Linguistics, but leaning toward the former.

Political science for my major. I was a sociology minor for all of two weeks until I realized that it would weigh down my GPA because all of the professors in the department are hard graders. I still take sociology classes because they're cool. Grad school after college.

Majoring in Psychology, about to declare Sociology as a minor. If I don't go to graduate school (probably won't, so sick of school) I probably have no hope of finding a career in the field, but hopefully I can find a nice enough job that will accept a bachelor's as a sign of competence.

I got my undergrad in Music Performance. I'm getting my Master's in... Music Performance. Note that I can't actually DO anything with these degrees that I wouldn't be able to do without them, with the exception of going on to the Doctorate, which I can actually use.

Got my undergrad B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering, got my M.S. in the same specializing in Flight Dynamics and Control, and now pursuing a Ph.D in yet the same specialized in Propulsion. Hoping to go into something hands-on and smaller-scale: Combat or Commercial UAVs or Weapon Systems perhaps. I would honestly be happy in anything that gets my hands dirty at least once a month and that doesn't involve just tons of Finite Element work -- read: structures. As AE's we can generally minor in math by taking one more course; it's not usually done though. The reason is that it's not uncommon for undergrads to go insane, have nervous breakdowns, and/or die before the end of their senior year. I have personally witnessed all but the latter. The course load requires we do everything in every other engineering major, combined. Some common AE Snobbishness: Civils and Mechanicals make our targets. PILOT: Pretty Ignorant Lots Of Training.

I'm majoring in Studio Arts and Design with an Emphasis in Drawing and until this semester I was minoring in English Literature. I've since found out that keeping my minor will keep me in school another semester or two, and since I'm raring to graduate (I will this spring), I just figured I'd drop it. Ah well.

Psychology with a minor in Art and Design: Electronic Imaging. I graduate in December and will be working as a zoo keeper. Degree won't help me much but at least college helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

Pre-pharmacy... with about 800 other students at my school. Only 80 get in the actual program every year. Thinking of getting an MS in chemistry and a minor in something instead. My grades are great and I'm probably a shoe-in for pharmacy, but I'm not sure I like the direction the profession is taking.

Originally went into school to do Mechanical Engineering. One of those 3-2 programs, where you spend 3 years at this school, get hired, and get paid to go to another school for the remaining 2 years. My family was stoked for me, and I was happy to do something I at least partially enjoyed. Took a couple film classes, and finally declared halfway through my senior year. Film and Video Production major and Business Administration minor.

The majority of the people I know are very happy to talk about their major because, you know, they decided to study it. The rest that don't really feel like talking about it are the people who just get a degree for he money and don't care either way. So I think this may be a local thing. Are their any popular specific specializations of the UCSC that could be particularly self-loathing?

Like Namarrgon just posted, its probably a local thing. Here, at the small-rear end university I go to, "What's your major?" is pretty much synonymous with "Nice to meet you!" Typically when I've seen someone not really want to talk about it, they're usually one of those people that think college is mainly about partying, so they spend every morning hung over. I don't drink, so I can't really comment on that last part. (Had to edit some punctuation and spelling. It started to bug the crap out of me.) I'm majoring in Applied Mathematics. I think I have a minor, but I'm honestly not sure what it is, because the math department here doesn't have a minor requirement, and thus no one gives a poo poo.
