MOTHER...

It's not as common now as it used to be, but it seems like there was an animated version of everything, even if it makes no sense. The TV Funhouse cartoons aren't that far from the truth (before the SNL parody I didn't know that The Harlem Globetrotters cartoon was real).

The Real Ghostbusters kicked rear end, and Star Trek, Back to the Future, and the Star Wars shows were fun. Animating a movie or comic makes sense. Other things... not so much.

A few days ago I found out about an early-80s cartoon called The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang. The Fonz, Richie, Ralph, a new anthropomorphic dog, and a future girl named "Cupcake" travel through time in a time machine! Yeah. On top of this, Laverne and Shirley Join the Army and Mork and Mindy were also cartoons.

Even The Beatles had a goofy animated series. The idea is really bizarre when you think about it, because they're caricatures of real people. The New Kids on the Block had a cartoon decades later, but I don't recall them ever doing anything amusing. Some of you might also remember The Robonic Stooges. It's The 3 Stooges, but now they're secret agents with bionic superpowers! That makes lots of sense, right?

All of these are ridiculous. I'm not saying that's bad; sometimes it's great. But it's still ridiculous.

What weird animated spinoffs do you remember existing? What cartoon spinoffs do you wish existed? ("Dr.House's Laboratory," please).

Yes, that was indubitably sweet!

The Mask cartoon was pretty bad. There was a goofy Battletech series where they went step by step, dice-rolling style, through every fight. Someone on SA recommended Wizards, a 1977 low-budget cartoon about fairies and elves fighting post-apocalypse Hitler wizard, it's weird how gory and suggestive it is considering the animation style.

Enjoy the thrilling adventures of cartoon Mr. Bean trying to find something good to watch on TV. Clever self-aware wink to the viewers or eerily accurate portrayal of Mr. Bean? You decide.

It didn't stop there. There was also Gilligan's Planet in which Gilligan and the castaways become stranded on an alien planet, and The Dukes, in which the heros from The Dukes of Hazzard are in a race around the world against Boss Hogg and Sheriff Rosco. I'm sure there were others.

Woo!

MC Hammer's animated series, had him dancing on music. He also had talking shoes.

There was also Little Shop of Horrors. Which wasn't so good, but it was half an hour of Audrey 2.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes the series was fun!

Toxic Avengers the series. Not so good, but it didn't have the dick monsters that Troma is known for! But there was a severe lack of Sgt. Kabuki-man NYPD.

Ace Ventura: The Animated Series.

I remember liking this enough as a kid. Until my brother bought the Ace Ventura movie set on dvd (including "select" episodes of the animated series on a separate disc. ONLY THREE EPISODES).

It's like they took everything about Ace that wasn't normal and ramped it up to eleven, and substituted that for any humour. Holy gently caress, was it ever excruciating. Instead of talking out of his rear end just to get a rise out of Aguado, he does it ALL THE loving TIME.

I realy liked the Ace Ventura movies but the show didin't quite live up to my expectations.

The worst though was the inevitable crossover episode between The Mask and Ace Ventura.

If you guess that the Mask ended up on Ace's rear end, yeah. Although it had one good line to it with a little fourth wall breakage.  Stanley Ipkiss! Are you following me or something??

There was a Jumanji animated series I used to watch.

As I recall, it wasn't bad. The art-style was heavily influenced by Everett Peck of Duckman fame - though apparently, he just did the character designs, and wasn't very involved with the show: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumanji_(TV_series)

I never cared about the show enough to rewatch it, but I remember that the idea worked pretty well in a TV series format. Though they changed the rules a bit for the sake of the show - now, the players would get sucked into the game on every turn, and would have to figure out the clue before they could leave. The guy stuck in the game was stuck because he never read his clue - so they kept playing to try and figure it out.

What I remember is that Van Pelt (The Hunter who came out of the game) is actually an immortal force that must exist, and anyone who kills him is doomed to transform into him - that the game has an avatar that looks like a cloaked skeleton in a fancy hat that comes out when things start going very wrong - and that they got rid of the girl who played Jumanji years ago and saw the kid get stuck, and the "stuffy, uptight aunt" character became the wild-man's chief romantic interest as a result (though it didn't come up too much).

It seems a lot of the blank: The Animated Series shows died off when the broadcast networks basically stopped doing their own cartoons. CN and Nick would rather do their own properties that they own (Clone Wars notwithstanding) while the networks just seem to buy prepackaged shows from production companies like 4kids.

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the thread title, just because of how remarkably terrible in a "Who even thinks this poo poo up" kind of way it is. In absences of that, I'll throw out Hammerman, the animated series about MC Hammer and his magical talking shoes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8WYh8uz3pQ

edit: Goddamnit, beaten again. At least I had the youtube link. How about the animated Beetlejuice, then? I hated that show even when I was a kid because all the "humor" stemmed from "Beetlejuice farts/burps/pulls off his socks to reveal moldy feet with stink lines emanating from them, followed by a foghorn sound effect."

As an offshoot of the "________: The Animated Series" set, there was the always terrible "_________: Kids" shows. The only one I can think of at the moment is "Tom and Jerry Kids" which had Tom and Jerry as "kids", that is, they wore baseball caps and were smaller than their normal equivalents. Also, they sucked.

I was looking through Hulu one day, and I discovered that someone had made an animated series based very loosely on Problem Child:

http://www.hulu.com/problem-child?c...on-and-Cartoons

It's roughly what you'd expect for a half-assed cash-in. I hadn't heard anything about it when it originally aired, and after watching an episode I can understand why.

And speaking of Star Wars and half-assed cash-ins, does anyone else remember the series starring the Ewoks? The one with no other link to the Star Wars universe, or anything else that might make it worth watching?

This premiered in the mid-'80s at the same time as Droids, another Star Wars cartoon featuring C-3PO and R2-D2 in their adventures predating A New Hope. Kenner made short-lived action figure lines based on both cartoons.

The '80s also brought several cartoons based on R-rated movies, including Rambo and "Robocop and the Ultra Police" (which also had toy lines as well). But none of the movie-based cartoons were better than The Real Ghostbusters, which had J. Michael Straczynski as the writer of most of the episodes.

There was a Crypt Keeper cartoon in the mid-90s that I remember being pretty good. It had a similar structure to the live-action series, just the content was more kiddy.

Mr. T even had his own loving cartoon. I only saw it on boomerang once, and it had a great moment where Mr. T was chasing one of those baby strollers that started rolling down a hill! And it's approaching an intersection! Oh no! What do you do? If you're Mr. T, you yell at the traffic light to "Change NOW!" Then the traffic light, likely making GBS threads its pants [if traffic lights wore pants,] quickly changes from green to red, deftly bypassing yellow, so that Mr. T could save the day!

Of all the celebrities to get their own show, I'd wager that Gary Coleman is probably not one you would ever expect.

I always think that the best cartoons based on movies are ones where the writers can pretty much make whatever they want. Ghostbusters was a great cartoon because they could make whatever monster they wanted and just say "It's a ghost.". Same with MIB and "Aliens" and Muppet Babies with "Imagination".

Here's one that I couldn't ever really figure out: Police Academy: The Animated Series.

I don't really remember terribly much of this show, other than that it had some cop that loved guns and tended to blow poo poo up, and another cop that would eat ANYTHING, and during the episodes they would use their 'unique talents' to win the day.

What is so bizarre about it is that it's a cartoon show based on a movie that (in many countries) has an adult rating and is filled with sex-related jokes, and it's not even very good. Yet somewhere, somehow, a TV show executive decided it was just the thing to base a kid's TV show on.

I remember knowing about the adult movies from their trailers. They would show all the cutesy stuff in them, and you'd see them on tv all the time. I'd wonder why I couldn't see them because the most naughty thing in them would be "don't move Dirt bag!" and such.

Later you'd see them and no understand the prostitute under the podium was giving the guy a blow job.

But yea, I remember as a kid, every movie had a toy line, even ones that it was clear that no kid should ever see. Robocop had one. I can only imagin some kid having the Clarance figure and going 'Bitches leave' to his sisters Barbies.

Shows like MIB, I can understand. Basically it was a hit movie, and rather then filming another movie with its huge cost, they can just make a animated show for a fraction of a price. Makes sense (plus it was a pretty kickass cartoon too)

But then you get stuff like "Laverne and Shirley Join the Army". What thought process is going through an executives head to take two independent women living in the city (with required wacky neighbors) with crazy "realistic" stories and decided that they need to join the army, have a commanding officer, who is a literal pig, and go on adventures in space or fighting giant apes.
