A few months ago I posted a thread asking what I needed to know about owning a GTO, or possibly debating buying a C5 Corvette. The consensus was "GTO." I was initially looking for a 05-06 with the 6.0 LS2 in either black or spice red, but unfortunately all the ones I found were completely out of my price range. I happened upon a yellow 04, for close to my price range. 68k miles on it, it was the guys dd for a while since his jeep was out of commission, but for an 04 with that many miles it was in pretty drat good condition. He was asking $15,000 for it, but after doing a one over on the car and pointing out pretty much every thing wrong with the paint, the fact that it needed new tires, won't pass inspection and a few other things, I ended up talking him down to $11,000 plus a car. He got a $500 2001 Jetta with a bajillion miles on it. Mechanically everything is sound. There was a bad O2 sensor so it was misfiring pretty bad, but I replaced that in a whopping 25 minutes and $50. The guy also didn't clean out the interior before he sold it saying "I'll give you $25 and the mexican place down the street will do it for ya!!!" Whatever just give me my car. So anyway I have the car now, and I love it! Never had a manual transmission car before, and have only driven manual once before for about 15 minutes. It's easy to drive, handles pretty loving good for how big it is, has a really nice interior along with functional back seats that are comfortable and spacious as well. So far I'm in love with the car. I stalled it once the day I got it (due to the horrible misfire), but haven't had any problems since. The mods I know of are K&N cold air intake, kooks long-tube headers, slp loudmouth exhaust (no cat or muffler), and a race tune. A buddy of mine owns Race Proven Motorsports, and works exclusively on LS series engines so I'm going to have him look it over for me to see if he can't tune it a bit to get me better gas mileage, since the 15.5mpg average is murdering me with premium gas prices. Any way onto the pics: Day I got it on the way back, parked next to a yellow as gently caress wall: ![]() Here's some of the issues with the tint/paint I was referring to earlier. The little chips/touch ups honestly don't bother me at all, I was just using them to get this dude to lower the price. Also I really need to wash the car don't yell at me! Whatever: Hood: ![]() Front bumper: ![]() Side skirt. Most of that is dirt since it rained the day before while I was out cruising: ![]() Interior: ![]() And more general shots: ![]() ![]() ![]() And a shot of my friends girlfriends 05 Cobalt SS and the GTO: ![]() Edit: Could a mod change the tag? I drove a black 2004 GTO for awhile and they are so much fun to drive. I actually like them more than the 6.0's. A girl I know let me drive her 6.0 to compare and the 5.7 is SO much smoother, plus the vents look ridiculous in my opinion. Definitely a good choice in car, I sold mine with 60k miles a few months ago for $13,500 but I miss it all the time.

Why do you guys get them cheaper in America then we do in Australia? :mindblow: You are looking at around AUD25-30k for them here.

Because you guys get them in colors that look amazing, with much nicer looking body panels. The HSV GTO in Aqua Blue looks incredible. If it wouldn't cost me the entire price of a new car, I'd love to do the conversion.

Nice goat! Don't do anything dumb with it. The best 'mod' I've made to mine is getting good tires with stiff sidewalls like Bridgestone RE-01R's. I'm thinking about some new springs though as the stock ones aren't that stiff and let the car sag and wallow about too much.I don't understand how there can be much difference between the LS1 and LS2 though, they're drat near the same engine. Perhaps the cable vs. electric throttle throws people off?

Nice car Dizman! These things are a blast to hoon around in. I really like how clean and smooth the 04s look. After driving an 05, I can say I would still be completely satisfied with an 04.mod sassinator posted:Nice goat! Don't do anything dumb with it. If you track it, you need stiff sidewalls. I had BFG KDWs that I ruined at the track. (Don't know if these particularly are OEM.) Inside tread looked decent, outside was showing cords. They'd even get greasy bombing around onramps. I've got Hankook RS-2s now (because they are cheap) and they are holding up well. I think the LS1/LS2 difference is power and throttle combined. Drive-by-wire is hard to use smoothly when you have this much power. I've never driven an LS1 car so I don't know how the cable throttle feels, but the LS2s are kinda tough to roll in to power with. You have to be very deliberate. My throttle lag is noticeable. I would like to drive an LS1 and LS6 sometime to compare.

How do the stock springs feel? Are they nice and stiff or are they floaty? I've never had the pleasure of driving a Goat and that's something I've always wondered.

They feel relatively stiff, for a 2 ton car. I drove a 6 speed LS1 GTO last year and it wasn't as planted as say an RX8 but I thought it was decent.

Like Ardemia said it's not the most planted car ever and an Evo or STI would handle turns much better, but I feel very confident going around turns. Granted I haven't really gone around turns fast yet, but for a 3,700lb car it's great.

uh, nice shoes. I'll never understand why the 80's Nike high tops are back in style. The GTO is probably the best automotive bargain in the US. Great power, great interior, great style, and an un-justly terrible resale value. The 6.0 cars with low miles are selling in the 15-17k range here in St. Louis. That is insane power for the money. I've driven a few of them... I'll buy in once they go for less than 10k.

They're not floaty but the car has a lot of body roll. If I take a turn sharply I usually have to brace myself with my elbow against the door to keep from sliding around. The rear springs in particular are crappy and sag after time giving it a droopy rear end look. This is mine with stock springs and the rear is noticeably lower: ![]() Also my personal best average mileage, 23.0 MPG: ![]() All highway driving though, I'm usually getting high 13's in the city. Just the nature of the beast.

I'd like to see a 3700 lb. car with a 6 liter V8 do better. The G8 GT with cylinder deactivation probably gets a little better but who wants to drive an auto. I was driving a Mazda 3 before this so I expected to get about half the mileage. Really it just means I fill up once a week instead of once every two weeks. I'm spending about $100 more on gas a month.

Came expecting a real GTO, left in rage. I've actually heard decent things about the "new" GTO's, and that is pretty crazy power for the price. The mileage, though, makes me feel like it'd be better suited for "occasional driver" in my shoes.

The LS series engine tends to be pretty bullet proof, so it's going to be driven more than occasionally, but no where near a daily.
