I don't really have an ear to the collective unconscious, so I'm sticking to Last.fm to tell me if anyone knows about these bands. Finn Riggins (8,317 plays) Post-punk/experimental from Idaho. They played in my town last year and were super-cool, it's hard to describe them. Their drummer plays a steel drum even though they could easily do a steel drum sound with their numerous synthesizers, so that's cool. Fang Island (31,612 plays) Five people, three guitars, no dedicated singer, "everyone high-fiving everyone". Pretty much every song they play is a catchy lead melody backed up by a huge rhythm section, and whenever they sing it's a group chant. I saw these guys live over the summer with So Many Dynamos and Maps & Atlases. It was hilarious because it's obvious none of them are great singers inasmuch as they all (except the drummer, who doesn't sing) stop playing their instruments during the singing/chanting. Plus they do a cover of "Single Ladies" which is p. cool. LIL RIBT fucked around with this message at Dec 16, 2009 around 02:00 |

Youngblood Brass Band Instrumentation you'd normally see in a marching band (which is how they formed), with a tuba playing lines that sound better than a lot of bass, screaming trumpets, saxes, and 'bones, and funky stuff in general. And some rapping. The current lineup has 4 percussionists, a sousaphone, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, and 2 saxophones. This has been one of my top bands for a while, especially playing brass myself. I know some people might turn away after reading that there's rapping, but really it's quite good. The songs with rapping in them really grew on me quickly. IF you want to hear what a tuba can do, try these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b19y8WU5VSw&fmt=22 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5FnG59X3vM&fmt=22 IF you want to hear some awesome lines: http://popup.lala.com/popup/3891391591889198014 (and some great beats) http://popup.lala.com/popup/3891391583299263422 IF you like horns doing what they do best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1LlnrL1Jis&fmt=22 [Instrumental] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxH9Dg1JLio&fmt=22 [Instrumental] Their two best albums (in my opinion) are Unlearn and center:level:roar. I would strongly recommend CLR to anybody who likes some of these songs. I thoroughly enjoy every song on the album, with no exceptions. answersyouseek posted:Jonah is certainly a busy man with all of the bands that he's doing up there in Canada. Career Suicide is by far the best of those bands though. Attempted Suicide is my favorite but they have a ton of great stuff. Brutal Knights are awesome as well. I don't even really compare them to Career Suicide due to the fact that they sort of stray more towards a garagey sound. Members of Brutal Knights were in a band called Teen Crud Combo right around the turn of the century and that band trumps most everything out of that area. They sound like a mix between Battalion of Saints and Motorhead with the same singer of Brutal Knights who has his very own distinct style. Seeing hosed Up in an underappreciated bands thread is laughable due to the fact that they are probably one of the biggest punk bands around at this point. I guess they've lost a little steam recently but as of a couple of years ago you couldn't go anywhere without hearing the hosed Up hype. Speaking of which, Jonah produced fellow Toronto band Urban Blight's newest release this year. Seriously, these guys are super loving good Negative Approach/Straight Ahead influenced hardcore. Saw them in Chicago last month and they ripped it up. I don't know if they're amazing, but I saw this post and figured I should mention them. http://www.myspace.com/urbanblight (Chronic Seizure also played that night. They're a fantastic Chicago hardcore band, so check them out if you're into this stuff) Some other bands I feel don't get enough attention (LONG, sorry, but I loving love these bands): The Marked Men - They're getting bigger, i think, but I've seen almost nothing about them. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, because everything they've put out has been one of my favorite garage/pop punk albums of that year. Incredibly catchy and they bring a bit more to the music than just some power chords and leads. http://www.myspace.com/themarkedmen The(?) Detachment Kit - Started out being a nothing special Les Savy Fav knock off. Turns out they're actually really versatile and talented, as their last two releases have shown. A little hard to pigeon hole, but I guess post-punk fused with early 2000s indie rock is an ok description. Songs from their newest release (which came out in 06) are all they have on their myspace, but they're a little different from their older stuff. More ... rock and roll, I guess. Their album before that, Of This Blood..., is PHENOMENAL. All of their stuff, even their earliest, is still good, if not great. But alas, they haven't released anything in almost 4 years, and while they still play shows (I think), a couple of them have started a new band. Who knows. http://www.myspace.com/detachmentkit If this thread was around earlier this year I would've said Holopaw, but turns out they just released a new album which Pitchfork .orgasmed over, so I imagine they're bigger now. But if you don't know them, they're a great folk/indie/rock band that's incredibly original. http://www.myspace.com/holopaw Kickball: Like Detachment Kit in that they're really hard to categorize, but these guys are more so. If I had to say, I'd say they're like a slower Algernon Cadwallader, but that's stretching it a little because they didn't rip off Cap'n Jazz. Super sincere and beautiful. On hiatus though. Bummer. http://www.myspace.com/kickballl One Last Wish: Everyone knows who Fugazi is. A lot less people know who Rites of Spring were. Even fewer know who One Last Wish were. They're the same people as Rites of Spring (I think), and they're way more optimistic and poppier. Personally, I like them more than RoS. Hell, just about every Dischord Records band could go in this thread. http://www.myspace.com/onelastwishdc Pinetop Seven: I have no idea how this band has been slept on. Another Chicago band (I love "my" city), they're pretty much the best when it comes to Americana/Alt-Country. PLUS, they're pretty prolific. I have three albums and an EP, but I know they have more than that. http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?...lbumid=10645847 Sorry that was so long, I tried to keep them brief but I just have so much to say...

Down with Urban Blight and Chronic Seizure and Rights of Spring but didn't The Marked Men break up like last year? Not that you shouldn't listen to their music, it's just that you speak of them in the present tense... Digging Kick Ball, thanks for the rec. I feel obligated to hype my friends' bands: Power Naps: http://www.myspace.com/powernaprocks Very lo-fi punkish stuff. Literally 3 kids who all played in mediocre garage bands that had moderately successful musicians in them (One dude played in a band with Casey Ramone from the Vivian Girls, the other two played in a hardcore band with future Stressed Out members). They rarely practice because one of them lives in NJ with the other two go to Hampshire with me. Also, E-603: http://www.myspace.com/e603 Girl Talk heavy sampling music. Another friend of mine who's getting bigger and bigger by the day. If he comes of your college get poo poo faced and go see him, you'll have a good time! Also, check out his side project, Air Bud: http://www.myspace.com/airbudmusic super fun synth punk with goofy lyrics and a lot of passion. For people who like to listen to people yelling "no parents no rules". Lastly, Andrew 'Squid' Frank: http://www.myspace.com/andrewsquidfrank The fact that his name is similar to Bonnie 'Prince' Billy should alert you to the fact that he is a signer song/song writer of the folk variety. However, his heavily distorted voice and interesting guitar effects / song composition makes his music more interesting than your average liberal arts student douchebag with a guitar. He can also finger pick like a mother fucker.

Murder By Death I never really see them mentioned anywhere. Their album "Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them" is a near masterpiece. It's an album about the devil staging a war in an old west town. The best way to describe them is like a gloomy chamber-rock bar band with some apocalyptic vibes thrown in. The vocals are pretty great - kinda moody and smooth. They come up with some pretty special arrangements and are generally pretty unique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9vMwSrKXBo

Epica They're a Dutch symphonic metal band, featuring a lot of the 'beauty and the beast' vocals, as they call it. Simone Simons has a fantastic voice that creates a great balance with the male screaming/grunting. The orchestra and chorus in the background of most of their songs really make an interesting and unique sound as well. They've just come out with a new album, and will be on tour starting in January. Honchie Indie humor-rock band from Texas. Unlike a lot of bands who base their music on humor, Honchie is actually funny and the humor holds up a little better on repeated listenings. Unfortunately, they never got picked up by a major label and broke up about two years ago. It's a drat shame; I've only been to Texas once and I never got to see them; I heard their live shows were legendary. They released two albums and they're both awesome. Ok so for my picks, I apologize because this ended up being a LOT longer than I had anticipated. I always seem to find all of these obscure bands and they litter my library. I have grouped them from most obscure to least obscure, with bonus last.fm plays for each. Hot Live Guys 1,260 plays A really good Canadian garage rock band that sticks in with the garage rock sound, and thats the way I likes it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zwHflDMsYs America Owns the Moon 2,083 plays A fun rock band that is a little garage rock, and a little punk. I think that one of the band members may or not be a member of these very forums, I can't remember. Blackshines - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0sN5kOCuv4 Five Style 2,436 plays A straight instrumental post-rock band, this is a really good CD, I am pretty sure they only put out 2 albums and are no longer together. The drummer was a member of Tortoise and one of the other members joined Wilco. (Couldn't find a good song/video to post.) Bear on Bear 8,411 plays A band that has a goon as a member, I can't remember when exactly I found out about this band but I know I have had them in my library for a while. They make some catchy indie rock music with some super catchy guitar work. (Couldn't find a good song/video to post.) Music for Animals 19,645 plays You may also find them listed on last.fm as musicforanimals. A good indie rock band who have the ability to make some pretty catchy tunes, this is another band I am surprized hasn't really caught on much. If Looks Could Kill - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC3ZktGtPvk Atrophy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVIJIBMcQbk Cavil at Rest 39,701 plays On their album Orion Way you can hear songs go from straight up indie rock, to a little bit folk, and even a little leaning towards progressive rock on one of the tracks. We Could Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsnfVAoBDhU In-Flight Safety 86,840 plays I seriously don't know how this band isn't bigger. Their first album The Coast is Clear is a fantastic album, they have a very Coldplay sound to them. (In fact one day I was listening to it my sister came over and wanted to know where I got the Coldplay CD I was listeng to because she didn't recognize any of the songs.) For some reason they haven't really seemed to catch on, which is a shame. Coast is Clear - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZISV82K8bI Gay Dad 103,803 plays Ok I had to dig back a bit for this one because the band broke up back in 2002 when they released their album Transmission. Their first album Leisure Noise is a fantastic album and I still listen to it frequently. The only way I found out about them was because they played at a theatre my cousin managed in Seattle sometime around 2000 when Leisure Noise came out. Joy! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C33u1NMaR8c CFCF 149,867 plays CFCF is really just the name of the single person behind the band; Michael Silver. Really good electronic/downtempo music. You Hear Colours - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzi97vh-lgE Cymbals Eat Guitars 664,895 plays A good indie/noise rock band who just released their first album this year. And the Hazy Sea - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuP4y0Dfyyk Harlem Shakes 718,295 plays Really good indie rock/pop band, they use the organ a lot in their music which is an automatic A+ for me. Carpetbaggers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuP4y0Dfyyk Belleruche 828,835 plays I dont even know how to explain Belleruche, their music is a mix of a lot of stuff. Think of a band that plays music from the 40's, classic jazz, hip hop, indie music all at once. That pretty much sums it up. Northern Girls - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYQzSIqWUH4 fun. 882,543 plays A great indie pop band from New York, their album Aim and Ignite is seriously fantastic. This is a band that knows how to make a good pop song, it's hard to not sing a long with most of the tracks on the album. Think of the band as an offspring if the Beach Boys and Queen had a baby together. All the Pretty Girls - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIoaiTwLk6I

FitFortDanga posted:Frank Chickens - Two Japanese gals, music is mostly pop/dance with an absurdist twist. They often skewer Japanese/Asian stereotypes, resulting in amusing tracks like "Yellow Toast" and "We Are Ninja (Not Geisha)". I remember when the Xen Cuts came out and they were featured in Fink's We Are Ninja track. I tried looking up some history on them but at the time wikipedia wasn't really fruitful. I managed to get ahold of their We Are Frank Chickens album but, aside from the music videos on youtube, all of their albums and singles are virtually impossible to find online.
