There was no easy reminder for them that the game was still going. I only know to post in my games because they show up on my user control panel. It wasn't terrible to switch over to that site and play but I'd constantly forget the game was going, and I felt I was one of the more active players.

That was my problem too (I assume we're allowed to post that we were in that game now since I don't think the guessing competition is going ahead?) I'd forget the game was going and then get sidetracked and miss deadlines because I was doing something else etc etc. It was sad.

Honestly one of the fixes I thought of for your Anonymous game is just a longer deadline and longer day. I hate to even say it but maybe have 2 week + deadlines like mafiascum. That way whenever people remember they're playing the game, it's not like there are two days left and no cases, you can set up a deadline lynch a few days in advance.

I bet everyone would still leave it to the last minute then find nobody remembered to be around at the deadline to make their "##vote whoever to avoid no lynch" posts.

I avoided signing up for anonymous mafia for the same reason I didn't read it more than a few times here and there: I don't want to have to go to an external forum.

I like the concept of avoiding meta and seeing how the quality of game changes, but

Did I accidentally run over your dog and not hear about it? You've never played in a game that I've run, ever, and Blind Date, MtG I, and Wifoa 1.5 were all extremely successful and most everyone that was in them wanted to be in other games I ran. Even some people in MtG II after it exploded still sent me messages asking to be in a MtG III if I ever worked out the kinks.

Xythar posted:

(I assume we're allowed to post that we were in that game now since I don't think the guessing competition is going ahead?)

Only like two people sent guesses, of like three people, and they were all wrong.

The list was:

FAKE NAMES:
Klungar
SmithKurosaki
EccoRaven
Francois Kofko
Poke-Protector 2000
50 pounds of bread
That Which Squeaks

REAL PLAYERS:
1 ) Xythar - mafia corpse identifier - a giant prude
found out who the mafia kill's SA sn was
2 ) FebreezeNinja - VT - Nude Towel Boy
3 ) Max - mafia - A MODEST BLUNT
4 ) hanadulset - VT - loves umbrellas
5 ) Voodoofly - Town Alphabet Cop - I loving LOVE CORN
investigated a player each night, found out if one letter by request was in that player's SA sn and 1 letter at random that wasn't in that player's SA sn.
6 ) Dhaes - Town SN Doc - Possibly Left Handed
protected SA sn's
7 ) Ridonkulous - VT - HELP
8 ) Sword in the Brain! - Town Investigator - Goatee Enthusiast
investigated whether a SA sn was in the game or not
9 ) fitsfadda - VT - youth in asia
10) Dead Cow - mafia predictor - Someone Else
could guess someone's SA sn correctly to kill them, once per night
11) The Ninth Layer - VT - A First Grader
12) synx - VT - STFU Dad!
13) miscellaneous - town public SN cop - The 90s
was responsible for the notes that were left, which were 100% true
14) Varinn - town JOAT - Taxable Income
one shot doc, one shot roleblock, one shot cop, one shot vig kill, all on in-game names
15) busb - VT - snuup dugg

As far as why it didn't work, a combination of too-short deadlines and on my part preventing me from sending a PM to everyone every game day. I think if it had worked like a real mafia game it would've given us some insight into meta but drawing conclusions from what actually went down would be silly.

Fairly new here, but thought I'd ask a question. In every game I've read or played, I've seen arguments go round and round about the value (or lack thereof) of cases using meta. What do all of you think the failure of sc4r's Anonymous Mafia implies about the necessity of meta in a game of mafia that involves veterans or at least experienced players with established playstyles?

Short recap of the game: Town was unable to produce cases that would band town together and they no-lynched for three days until the game was called off.

A lovely town that no lynches day after day does not speak towards any value or non-value of meta.

I should've made it more clear to just send in whatever guesses you wanted to make, but vOv. I like the idea of having some sort of viewer participation contest/prediction contest during/at the end of a Mafia game though, I've been brainstorming a few ideas about how to make it work.

Everyone has a proxy who posts for the real player. Kinda like the hidden team in your mtg2 game, but it's the whole player base that's proxied.

It'd be great except the part where A: you'd need to time it so you're on at the same time (not only difficult but potentially giving away timezones) and B: it would be horribly unfun for the players who were the proxies and not real players. At least the hidden team in MTG2 just was helping with win conditions, not just saying "post this. ok now post this. what, original thought? hahaha no."

Unfortunately it's the best way to do it. Maybe a team concept where half of the team is hidden, but that still is a little wonky.

I noted that you had some confusion about when the deadline was early on (you thought it was in like 15 minutes when it was actually hours away IIRC) and figured that an American was less likely to have that issue since it'd be in their native timezone (or close to it). So I had this list of players and crossed off people who I knew were American, highlighted people who I knew weren't American and the rest was an educated guess. You seemed to be around at the same time as me fairly often so I thought it was more likely to be you than anyone else.

Yeah i thought it'd be a timezone thing. I was sure when the location thing sc4rs talked about came out that someone had seen where i was posting from. But timezone is fair enough.
