After hearing a lot of horror stories about HP laptops and their heating problems, I think it would be smart to invest in a cooling pad. My question is should I go with one of the fan cooling pads or an ice pad, and is there any particular brand I should look for/avoid? Checkout the Zalman NC1000 and NC2000. I hear the NZXT Cryo is pretty good too. Should be able to find them from your supplier of choice for around $50US or $60US. All of these rate very well in reviews. The NC1000 is probably what you're looking for since the other two are moreso for bigger machines (unless of course you don't mind a bit of overhang).

Haha - yeah that's how I'd heard about them. They are very good coolers, I've seen a Cryo and it's very nice. I was considering buying one for my Dell M1530 for a while there, but didn't get around to t. The Antec Cooler as in this one? http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...d=418&Itemid=66 That also seems to get good reviews. It'd probably be a bit more suitable for smaller machines since the air flow looks to be a bit more focused on the important bits of the laptop.

The review says its nearly $60... for that money by NXT or Zalman. It's outrageous. A far as size goes, the reviewer used a relatively small laptop. I don't think you're fitting a 18 inch behemoth on that thing.

I am looking at getting a Lenovo Thinkpad T500. My question is how big of a difference does the discrete graphics card make? It adds about $200 to the price tag. The Intel GMA x4500HD should be good enough to run Aero with Windows 7 right? I will be using the computer for Visual Studio, SQL Express, running virtual machines and the normal internet surfing + hulu watching. I don't play any games. For reference the configuration I am looking at is: * Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2) 25W * Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64 * 15.4" WSXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight * Intel Graphics Media Accelerator x4500HD with vPro * 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM) * 160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm * DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA) * Intel WiFi Link 5100 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology * 6 cell Li-Ion Battery

Which isn't bad. But you won't get better performance for 1 grand anywhere else. I ended up buying the new sony F series laptop late last night though: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...552921644691999 quote:$1254.99 after tax (with 7% student discount) Basically you can fix the screen (full 1080p), add a back-lit keyboard, get slightly better graphics, windows professional, and no bloatware, for about ~200 more (Sony gives 7% off if you are a student) I know the hard drive sucks, but I don't care because I will buy a SSD when the prices come down. My request on the other page got skipped over so I'll repost.. -13-15" (Would rather go smaller than bigger) -Under 5 pounds -Decent battery life -Decent gaming capabilities. I don't really play anything now but I plan on getting in on some SC2 and Diablo 3 action in the future. Blizzard's games tend to be playable on a variety of system requirements so I'm hoping something like the 14z would be able to handle it somewhat with the Geforce 9400M. I have a HP tx2500 tablet laptop that I'm going to sell and it handles L4D pretty well on medium settings with an inferior GPU to the Studio 14z. -Max budget around $800-1000 Some possible choices I've picked out are the Dell Studio 14z (not sure if the GPU is good enough), Sony Vaio SR and CW, and Lenovo Ideapads.

This is a general opinion question I would love some insight on. I have an HP notebook (I know, HP sucks, I didn't do my research first) for my primary computing purposes. One of my hobbies lately has been music production. I was given Sony Acid Music studio as a gift and also a USB keyboard. I really enjoy music production and while I don't want to make it a profession, it's something of a "serious hobby" for me now. Acid is pretty good, but I could use some extra plugins and program suites for some of things I'm playing with. Those cost money. I have some disposable income and I am think of going in a couple different directions. I can spend $500-600 on some new, better software and music accouterments for my HP, but will probably have to replace the laptop in a couple years because, HP. Or, I could spend a bit more on a new Mac with Garage Band which my other musical friends seem to rave about. I would eventually have to buy some extra stuff for it too, tho? Is it worth switching over to a MacBook for music production (since Macs are supposed to be the go-to computers for creative types) and spending more money, or do you think some better professional software will suffice for my purposes? edit: Building a desktop would be impractical for me at this juncture, fyi Anal Surgery fucked around with this message at Jan 12, 2010 around 00:30 |

The speed (1.3ghz) is trippin' me out a little so I just want to make sure it's good enough. Thanks. edit: turns out ASUS is releasing an upgraded version soon with the i7 processor and 310 gpu. i'll probably still just get the ul30vt because I need a laptop before the middle of February. hmmxkrazee fucked around with this message at Jan 11, 2010 around 07:44 |

cross posting from the netbook thread: so my dad is asking me about this laptop (which I guess is kind of like a netbook since it's really thin and has long battery life) since he wants a desktop replacement. All he does really is read newspapers and watch news shows on youtube. Is it a good deal? I'm kind of skeptical about a few things. The speed (though I don't know how to gauge speed now due to different cores and processors; eg. the 900mhz celeron = 1.6ghz atom). The 3 gb of ram (don't you want 1, 2, 4, 8gb, etc.?). And the laptop being a refurb (from circuit city which I thought doesn't exist anymore). http://www.circuitcity.com/applicat...sku=S445-150048

I'm looking to get a new laptop, hopefully with a focus on portability: so something low weight and with a decent battery life. I was looking into the Asus UL series which looks almost perfect, except the resolution for that series is only 1366×768, which is a bit of a dealbreaker for me as I'd probably be doing a lot of flash development work (and working with Adobe's products with a low resolution is certainly not ideal). Are there any similar laptops with a bigger resolution? 1440x900 or bigger, preferably. Portability isn't that big of an issue as long as I can comfortably lug it around with me in a bag and use it on my lap without searing my legs (like my current laptop does).

There are few options if you want a resolution higher than 1366 on a laptop with a screen below 16 inches, and none that I can find that are CULV. If you're doing stuff like flash development that requires a lot of screen space, ideally you'd have a workspace with at least an external monitor
