So the Vostro V13 was released with pretty limited fanfare, but it looks like a spectacular unit for its price point. It's super thin and super super light which is rather tempting. For $770 you get: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, with Media, 32-bit, English 2.0GB, DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM, 1 DIMM 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive 3 Year Basic Limited Warranty and 3 Year NBD On-Site Service Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor ULV SU7300 (3M Cache, 1.30 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD 1.3MP Webcam with Digital Microphone Intel Pro/Wireless 5100 802.11b/g/n 6-cell 30WHr internal battery For an extra $169 you get 3yrs of accidental coverage too. The only flaw I can see is that it doesn't have a user-serviceable battery which could become a problem down the line. Has anyone seen any real world feedback on this notebook?

Regicide posted:The link isn't working. I am gonna try searching for it based on the info in the url but I don't know how lucky I'll be. Best Buy embeds their SKU into their URLs. Do a Google search for Best Buy 9556125 and it was on the front page. I'm on my cell so I didn't bother clicking through though.

professor muthafukkah posted:I have another question, if I want to connect this laptop to my HD TV, which cables do I need? It says my laptop has an HDMI connection, so if I have an HDMI cable from my xbox 360 could I just use that to connect the laptop to the tv? If not, what do I need? Thanks. That's all you need, but if you go to monoprice.com (or amazon.com if you have Amazon Prime) and grab an extra HDMI cable for dirt cheap so you don't have to keep going back and forth.

Thirteenth Step posted:When I bought my laptop it came with a 250gb HDD. 160GB of it is one of those poo poo recovery partitions, is there I way I can retrieve the software from the recovery partition and reformat? There's usually a utility that lets you convert the recovery partition into a series of CDs/DVDs. Once you've done that you could reformat.

Look through your whole Start menu as well as Control Panel. What make/model is it? Someone with your laptop might be able to point it out directly.

How are u posted:I just got my laptop, ordered the Acer, now I'm not sure how to go about setting it up the right way. Is there a good thread with advice for clearing out bloatware and finding a good free virus scan and such? You can either reformat and install Win7 again using the media usually included, or you can just uninstall anything you don't want. For free A/V there isn't anything out there better than Microsoft Security Essentials at the moment.

Arkady posted:Edit: Do any companies other than Lenovo make nubbin mice on modern laptops? I really love it on my work T61. It would suck to move to trackpad only. The Dell Latitude D series has the nubbin, don't know if the E series does as well.

Coredump posted:The e series does in fact have the nubbin. And I hate it so... Why's that? You can disable it in QuickSet (or so I thought) and I find that it comes in handy when you're in confined spaces (ie airplane or bus)

Coredump posted:Just for the simple reason that our admin password has a "b" in it and I bump into the nubbin all the time going for the key. So if I'm typing in a text box the cursor will move my typing and I have no idea what letters made it in the text box so I have to start all over. I don't get to disable the nubbin either since any laptop I touch is usually only in my possession for a day or so. Stop ham fisting your keyboard <3

Corte posted:Long story short was given an application for a one-time purchase of a laptop/notebook for academic career and went with the best specs I could get within budget with the best warranty. Is it a grant or a loan? Either way you shouldn't be dropping that much money on a C2D if you can avoid it, but if it's a loan you should reconsider spending so much on a laptop.

Coredump posted:I'm asking a honest question here but would a video card actually help with video editing and transcoding? I was under the impression those are more processor dependent than video card dependent. CS4 has the ability to offload to the GPU. On my C2D 1.86GHz desktop with an Nvidia 7950GT I noticed a decent increase in Photoshop when I was working with massive HDR images once I enabled the GPU offloading.

My X61's battery just crapped out, and all the replacement batteries on Amazon seem to crap out within months instead of years. Check the Lenovo outlet. They were running a big sale on batteries a bit ago; maybe it's still going on?

The Dell docks are only interchangeable between like-series models (ie D vs E series) so a D430 can use the same D-series dock as a D610 but an E4300 couldn't use a D-dock. The reason to get Win7 Pro is for RDP and Domain access. ryanbruce fucked around with this message at Mar 30, 2010 around 05:50 |
