Why is it "shady poo poo?"

The amateur clubs don't pay any wages, but get a small bump in ticket sales from publicizing that they're bringing in "international," players. Scouts from actually good Bundesliga clubs wouldn't go to those matches and players are effectively there on a tourist visa (hence the 1-3 months). Chances of actually getting a contract with a German club are almost zero. It's a glorified holiday in Germany dressed up like a real opportunity. I knew of a couple players who tried similar things and they wasted a shitload of money and some of their early-20s chasing something that wasn't really being offered to them. For some of them, they couldn't really afford it in the first place but poo poo, they were "being offered a way to become a professional footballer!"

Yes with that added context that letter is some shady poo poo.

But maybe I am missing something, what does the Attorney/agent get? Some sort of kickback from the club for bringing in a foreign national?

Yes, that's what a trial is. Impress someone and you get a contract. Were you seriously expecting an offer from "actually good Bundesliga club?" Like you wrote earlier: "there's a slew of lovely Americans playing in the lower leagues of continental Europe." So it does help some players.

I imagine they are hoping some of the players do sign a contract and the agent gets 5% of their salary or whatever it is. There is no value whatsoever in a "foreign national" lol.

They're amateur clubs. They don't pay wages at all. Players don't get anything from a trial with them. How many amateur players over the age of 24 or 25 do you know of that earned paid contracts with clubs higher in their domestic pyramid? That slew of players is always rotating, which was the point I was making. They're churned out constantly, go over there expecting something and come back empty handed and broke. The only people who stay over there are people who hold a European visa who can work on top of playing for the amateur clubs.

Your guess is as good as mine. But I doubt it actually had to do with getting a percentage of player wages, since players weren't getting any wages. Nor were they likely to ever get any.

I'd imagine there's money laundering going on there somewhere. If they charged the full 250e for food a month to players and got 3-5 over they have, in effect, just raised the equivalent of half or more of the money the DFB grants them every year for development purposes.

I'd also be interested to know more about the accommodation details. German rental laws are complex if you aren't used to them, so it's fairly common for companies or corporations to rent in the name of the individual if appropriate. However, the letter doesn't state whether Kaution is to be paid by the individual, or really anything beyond "handled by club". Which could be anything from pensions to living with players' families.

Oh and by the way, German Amateur footballers get their costs reimbursed to an extent. I bet the foreigners don't.

What, I wonder, does this hidden face of madness reveal of the makers? These K'Chain Che'Malle?
It sounds more like the player pays for his own food rather than paying the club for it.

What it looks like to me is them saying "hey you play at an okay level in the states. Pay to get over here and for your own food and we will give you a bed to sleep in. In exchange we want you to play in some amateur games and try out for professional clubs."

The cost to arranging this is next to nothing. The amateur clubs put some players up on sofas or in spare bedrooms. The inviter pays nothing at all. If one player gets a pro contract he can demand some kind of fees though.

It doesn't really sound like anyone is being scammed here. The americans get a cheap sporting holiday to Europe (no accommodation costs plus kitchen access so cheap food costs compared to a hotel or hostel), amateur clubs get exotic American players for a few games in exchange for housing them, and the agent gets a tiny chance of a lottery win if one turns out to be a hidden gem.

Except that as the guy said that's not how it works out. In addition you are talking about a mass spam mail rather than anyone going "that is a promising lad; let's bring him across".

All in all it seems a pretty scuzzy way of enticing people to take a huge gamble where they bear essentially all the costs and risks.

Me too. Sure it's a mass spam at anyone playing in certain competitions but what risk? They are risking the cost of a flight and their food / spending money and getting accommodation for free. If you take loans to afford it as a career move you are dumb. If you treat it as a partially funded holiday in exchange for playing some football it sounds like a good deal.

If I could have gone to a different continent and been put up in a first world city for free in exchange for playing football at 18 I would have done it. If I didn't have kids and a job I'd do it tomorrow.

Basically it was idiotic not to build it with the idea of a football club taking over from the start. I remember people saying that before construction even began - there was obviously no other viable long-term use. But it seemed to be politically necessary to pretend that an 80,000 seat arena would definitely be preserved for athletics use.

Spurs' plan sounds like it would really have been the best for both football and athletics with a rebuilt Crystal Palace.

That wasn't the plan though. It was designed to be reduced to a 20,000 seat athletics stadium which would have cost gently caress all.

Yeah but that was a pretty poo poo plan that got vetoed for a reason.

Conversion would still have cost a load of money, and future income would have been pretty much nothing as the uses for a 20k seater stadium with a running track are not plentiful. You probably couldn't even host major athletics tournaments.

The biggest driver of putting it where it is was regeneration of the local area - a stadium that brings in 50k people 30 weeks a year is a lot more useful for that than one that brings in 20k twice a year.

It was vetoed because the cost of running it was apparently too expensive although the cost of the conversion at the moment could have covered it for 15 years.

Crystal palace is also still a dump but now has no replacement.

This is where we remember that GM are pulling the Chevrolet brand from Europe entirely by the end of this year. Some kind of renegotiation to change from the Chevrolet branding to Opel/Vauxhall or whatever other poo poo brand GM want to promote would make sense

The Chevy logo in gold is nothing short of garish. It'd be fine if it was in the style of the AIG and Aon logos, white and fairly unobtrusive. Some fakes that came out shortly after the deal actually looked not-terrible
