Not very convincing as far as 'market value' goes in my opinion.

According to this site (not sure how accurate it is, but should be in the right area), it's £607.5m with £160m coming in.

The most amazing thing about that list is that they managed to get £21m for Wayne Bridge and SWP.

Chelsea paid £21m for SWP alone though. They essentially paid £12m to loan him for 3 years and also paid all his salary.

But like I said earlier, that gives specific benefits to the clubs buying the players that other clubs do not have.

Why should a few clubs gain an advantage over the rest?

It's not like only a few clubs are given permission to buy the players in question. Maybe they should gain an advantage if they're willing to put forward the best offer?

There's only a limited number of players for sale - it would be impossible for every club to benefit equally even if they all could and wanted to.

Read your post again and have a think about why this is counter-productive both in terms of fairness and financial responsibility.

Well either they get released on free's and whichever team can offer them the highest wages gets them, or they get sold and whichever team can offer the highest transfer fee/wages gets them. What's the difference, or what other alternative is there if the players have to go because they wont agree to lower wages?

What's the difference between doing this and not you mean?

The difference is that it breaks the transfer window and allows a minority of clubs to bring in extra personnel and gain an advantage over the majority of clubs that do not or can not.

The alternative for players that have their contract terminated because their club can't afford them is to sign for another club in a league with an open transfer window, or wait until the transfer window opens and live off their savings, or find an alternative occupation.

If their contract is terminated doesn't that mean that other clubs can sign them on a free transfer?

Why not? What's the difference (in terms of signing for other clubs) between being released on a free and having your contract terminated? Rangers surely can't keep their registrations?

I don't know if you heard but they won the title, have an excellent squad, so they're done with spending money. Except for Hazard. And van Persie. And then Wilshere next season when he plays 30+ games and carries Arsenal to another top 4 trophy.

Manchester City's owners have bought Melbourne Heart.

BBC posted:

Melbourne Heart taken over by Manchester City-led consortium

A consortium led by Manchester City have taken over Australian side Melbourne Heart.

City's chief executive Ferran Soriano said: "We are excited about the opportunity to make Melbourne Heart one of the most successful football clubs in Australia and throughout the region.

"We believe the strong sports culture of Melbourne, combined with the football and commercial expertise within our consortium, will make for a powerful combination both on and off the pitch."

The consortium which has bought Heart - who are currently bottom of the 10-team A-League table - sees the group which owns rugby league's Melbourne Storm take a 20% stake in the club.

Bart Campbell, chairman of both the Heart Consortium Group holding company and Melbourne Storm, said: "Partnering with City to co-invest in Melbourne Heart will further strengthen the sporting landscape in one of the world's greatest cities and bring a range of new capabilities to AAMI Park.

"We are excited to be a part of this unique project. It is our shared ambition to replicate the model that City created with the New York Yankees around New York City FC and for both organisations to benefit as a result."

Melbourne Heart chairman Peter Sidwell said: "The board feels that with the successful establishment and evolution of the club over the last four years, Melbourne Heart now stands on sound commercial and financial foundations."

David Gallop, chief executive of the Football Federation of Australia, said the deal represented a huge vote of confidence in the future of the Hyundai A-League.

"Football has moved into the mainstream of Australian sport and is ideally placed to benefit from the boom in football across Asia," he said.

"Manchester City and their Australian partners have made a strategic investment and I welcome them to our growing competition. It's another sign that the world is taking notice of Australian football."

Manchester City's investment in Melbourne Heart FC follows its establishment of New York City FC in May 2013, which will enter Major League Soccer in the United States in the 2015 season, and its establishment of Manchester City Women's FC, that will play in 2014.

It's funny because Chelsea are in "trouble" with FFP because the first 2 years they were good and then the 3rd year they had a loss. If they just would've spent a ton of money those first two years they could get a pass like City since the losses would be decreasing.

Maybe they should have thought of that two years ago

Mods change the topic from Portsmouth to QPR please

BBC posted:

QPR 'challenge legality' of Football League FFP regulations

Queens Park Rangers revealed they have begun legal proceedings against the Football League, a day after being relegated from the Premier League.

The club say they are challenging "the legality of the Championship Financial Fair Play rules", which could leave them facing a fine of up to £58m.

Rangers said any charge for breaching the rules would not begin until the outcome of their challenge was known.

Their relegation was confirmed by Sunday's 6-0 loss at Manchester City.

In March, the club announced losses of £9.8m, but £60m worth of loans were written off by owner Tony Fernandes and other shareholders.

A failure to pay any fine imposed could see the London side being refused entry into the Championship.

Football League Financial Fair Play
Championship clubs were permitted losses of £8m (£5m funded by shareholders) in 2013-14.

Clubs promoted back to the Premier League who exceeded those losses are subject to a fine.

There is a sliding scale on the next £10m of losses, with a maximum fine of £6.681m.

Once losses exceed £18m, the fine is imposed on a strict pound-for-pound basis.

Should there be an overall loss of £30m, the fine would be almost £19m. If it was £50m, the figure would be nearly £39m.
