Moo!

Well Boxee just announced 'Cloudee', which lets you share your personal videos....

Guess Boxee functionality (besides 'social') is dead.

Electricity In Our Homes

I've just had to RMA my Box - when I pressed the power button the loading screen would appear but it had a pink hue and the image would be flickering & static-y, then the signal would disappear.

I'm really disappointed as I've been loving my boxee so far. I've never had to RMA something before, is it usual to have to pay the return shipping? Seems a bit lovely that I've had to pay £10 to return their defective product.

Yeah, it is normal to have to pay for shipping for warranty repairs. At least in the US.

Maybe I am just an idiot but how in the gently caress do you turn off the subtitles while watching a video with the latest firmware? They are off in the main menu by default but they are always on anyhow. Of course now that I have updated from a very old build the in-video advanced menu has about 2 options.

Mine does this. Press the center button, then choose the cog icon and drill through a menu or three and you're there. Keep in mind most files with subs, turning them off also turns off subs for other languages unless you have the right file that ONLY does those bits.

Bow before the might of the Clarkson!

That's how I used to do it, but I recently upgraded my firmware for some stupid reason. Now my Settings menu while watching videos gives me these options:

Subtitle Offset
Audio Offset
View mode

So... Yeah. Is there some menu or setting I'm missing to expand my options?

It is there because I have to use it literally any time I play an mkv file. Not at my boxee right now to figure it out, but the option is there.

Is it just me right have we not seen an update in a while? A little odd, I figured they'd pick up the pace by now. Especially with the announcement that thy are dropping support for the Windows version of Boxee.

Last update was march and they said it was a ~3 month cycle so maybe something soon.

It's just whatever is available on the network's website. The only one I know doesn't work is CityTv.

so I'm probably just an idiot but...

after my router died yesterday and I swapped it out for a new one, my boxee can't find my media folders that I had it pointed to on the network. It shows them but it won't connect. is there an easy way to re-link them? not sure why I can't browse to them, my PC's IP address shouldn't have changed... I'm a total home networking noob.

if your new router is a different brand, or even a different generation of the same brand, the IP addresses it gives out will have changed.

for example 192.168.x.x on your old one, and 10.0.x.x on your new one. if the boxee is expecting your movie folder to be at \\192.168.x.x\movies, and your router is giving your devices all 10.0.x.x addresses, it wont find them on the network.

Boxee is incredible for streaming local content. It's all I use it for and couldn't be happier, other than maybe a less leggy interface.

The boxee box is getting to be 2 years old now. It wouldn't surprise me if some updated ARM hardware comes out this year. Updates also seem to have stalled as there hasn't been one since march 5, not even in the beta channel. Jira is pretty stagnant as well.

I'm shocked that they locked it down enough that some one didn't figure it linux/xbmc on the boxee. When I bought it, I really expected it to happen. I got mine within a few months of release.

To be honest, I'm still pretty happy with mine. But I do 90% local media from a usb HDD.

They had to to attract partners like netflix and vudu, partner deals are their only revenue stream.

When has that ever stopped the mod scene? I understand why Boxee/DLink locked it. I'm just amazed they did it well enough that it never got cracked (to my knowledge).

Out of curiosity is there anything comparable to boxee for the price these days? I've had one since launch and it's still perfect for playing back local media files. I just wish I could still watch The Daily Show/Colbert streaming.

Anything that will run xbmc?
Don mentioned the Zbox AD10, that goes for $200. You'll have to install Win/Lin and XBMC, but that's cake. Check out the XBMC & HTPC threads for specifics.

EVERY FAIRY TALE NEEDS ITS HERO.

I'm a little overwhelmed by all the information here, and I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to TV stuff. Super simple question: can I connect the Boxee to my LCD Monitor?

The monitor has HDMI/DVI/VGA connectors, so that shouldn't be an issue, but is there any complication with using it with a monitor instead of an HDTV? The monitor has speakers/headphone out and I have external speakers, so I assume audio wouldn't be a problem, but since I've never tested that those speakers actually work (can I even do this if it's just hooked up to my laptop via HDMI?), does the Boxee have a separate audio out?

Yep. You should be good on all counts. There is an extra optical out as well as composite audio (Red/White stereo).

Excellent, thanks. One more question: The Amazon description implies that the Live TV tuner is built-in, but the website lists a separate dongle for $49. If I have to buy separately, do I have to get the Boxee brand one, or would something like the Leaf be compatible with the Boxee?

you buy the dongle and connect that to your boxee, then screw your antenna coax into the dongle. so you need the leaf and the dongle.

$20.50 USD for more RAM than ever needed (4GB), $10 for a good SD card to run openelec (dedicated linux distro for running XBMC). Your neighbor/Goodwill/parents will have a spare mouse and keyboard (which you'll not need after the first five minutes of set up).

Granted, it won't handle Netflix (openelec/*nix limitation), but in general the buy-in price of an XBMC AD10 is $230. (Sign up for NewEgg's email coupons and get your AD10 for $180 when they offer.)

I don't know where to ask this but I download most of the shows that I watch. We pay for cable and I have dvr but it's easier to just download and watch it without commercials than having to remember when stuff is on and fast forward through them.

That being said, I recently got my dad addicted to Justified. I have the first 2 seasons on DVD but I have the third season on my computer as it's not on dvd yet. I can plug my laptop into the tv and stream it from my desktop through Plex but my dad doesn't know how to do all of that if I'm not home.

So I'm looking at a media streamer for the tv in the living room. Boxee can do that right? And is Boxee the only one that can do that? My stuff isn't on iTunes so I'm guessing Apple TV is out. Does Roku play local media or is it just Netflix/Hulu/etc.?

A device with a remote would be best and I want it to at least have Netflix if not Hulu+ as well.

you can add a channel on roku that points to a network drive. You will just be looking at a list of files.

If you download a lot of shows you might find benefit in having boxee or xbmc which will scrap your media and present you more than just a list of files. Boxee is great for a single tv user with fairly basic requirements. The third option would be to wait for android xbmc which is out in alpha and looking impressive.

If you just want a file browser roku might be the way to go. If you keep your files around and want to maintain all your media roku is not the way to go. I think right now is a bad time to buy a boxee with the silence from the company we are expecting probably new hardware/software soon.
