I know a Boxee can see shared network drives. But can other computers on the network see the USB drives attached to the Boxee as a network drive?

n0n0 posted:If you happen to have a Mac, the mac will see the free space on the Boxee instead of the free space on the networked USB drives attached to the Boxee. This makes it impossible to drag-and-drop files from a Mac to the Boxee. That sounds... Odd. Thanks for the info though.

BorderPatrol posted:Boxee is a fork of the open-source XBMC software, but it is a proprietary OS on proprietary hardware. You can't load or update your box independantly of Boxee releasing the firmware. People really need to test drive Boxee software on their laptops. If you like it on your laptop/PC, it will be perfect on their TV with a cheap PC or a Boxee Box. I was THIS close to picking up a Boxee Box on the holidays. But was turned off by the remote. So instead I'm going to put Boxee software an old computer behind the TV. I'm testing Boxee software on my laptop and have downloaded the Boxee remote to my iPhone. It's been fantastic so far. I really hope my old 2.5GHZ HT 1Gb Ram and a lovely ATI card will be able to run the software well enough.

I like the idea of the remote. But I have a feeling the tiny keys labeled with gray type on gray keys on a black remote will be cumbersome for my father who will use this more than any of us and will usually be in a dark room. I just tested Boxee on our ancient HTPC and while it played our local rips and navigated the menus really nicely it just could not play the flash stuff without lots of frame drops and hiccups. I updated flash just in case Boxee used it. I might try updating the graphics card drivers, though I doubt ATI is even supporting it anymore. Anything else I should try before throwing the towel and picking up a Boxee Box? It's a 2.5ghz P4 with HT and the CPU is pretty much maxed out while playing any streaming TV shows. I've been doing my homework as best I can to make sure I have the right setup so that I can surprise my Dad on Christmas Eve. I'm aware that there are some UI changes between the Box Software and the PC Software. I've been using my laptop as a test to look for and test apps and content that my family will be interested in. All the content that I can access on the PC Software will be immediately available on the Box Software right? (I'm in Canada) The only difference being I may have to maximize some content as seen in Anantechs Review: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4029/...ee-box-review/6 Apps are cross platform too correct?

Is the Boxee Box going to care that I've formatted my external drive to NTFS? Are the Macs that try to access the SMB share Boxee will create going to care? Looks like no, no. Ziploc fucked around with this message at Dec 21, 2010 around 22:39 |

Wait, does it actually use the TVDB? I've been trying to get some BBC documentaries (which are on a poo poo ton of DVDs ugh) onto the Boxee. I can't get the first series to get recognized on the box. This one: http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=80427&lid=7

Pleasantly surprised that Canada didn't get hosed over by some stupid licensing catch.

geera posted:Yup. It plays pretty much everything and supports USB hard drives for expansion. I have one hooked up to my Boxee and can access it as a share over my network. I do this too. Works great! I chuck files to it all the time. My parents are starting to learn how the streaming works. Even though the box likes to give up every so often when playing stuff through Canadian channel sites, they still like it quite a bit.

Lump Shaker posted:Thanks in advance. My setup is close. 250gb HD USBed into the Boxee WRT54G LAN to a Windows7 box Wifi to OSX laptop I setup SMB sharing and network sharing with no password on the Boxee. And made sure that the Boxee is on the same work group as the Windows7 box. Instantly shows up under network on the Windows box. I can also smb://IPADDRESS to the Boxee on my Mac without issue.

I use it with a USB HDD in it and use the Boxee as the NAS server. Works great. Easy to get content on it. And I set up all my PCs in the house to point to the Boxee for their Boxee software content source. Works great! Gets over run kind easily when more than 2 people start watching poo poo off it. Poor little guy can't keep up. Has been easily worth the purchase to me. kri kri posted:http://i.imgur.com/1bgHI.jpg Oh god what the gently caress. That better not gently caress up old remotes.

So today I noticed that all my machines had the Airplay icon available. Not owning an AppleTV I clicked the button to see what was up. Sure enough the Boxee supports airplay now! Tried it briefly and it played a picture slideshow and a 720 clip off my album roll. Rad.
