so I just started setting up my new Boxee and am trying to point it to my local files. Why is it prompting me for a username/password when I select my PC (it's showing up as a samba share)? I made sure my media folders are shared with everyone and can't figure out why it wants a username/password.

is there any way to replicate Apple AirPlay's functionality on Boxee? An Apple devotee family member is considering Boxee over an apple tv but he really wants this feature so he can send things he's playing on his iPad straight to his Apple TV.

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/11/23/hand...ake-a-magic-co/

thinking similar to Boxee's "Watch Later" bookmarking feature but that would work in the iPad browser or something...

can anyone tell me if there's a way to take a thread here on SA, say the post youtube videos thread and turn it into an RSS feed that can be fed to Boxee and strip everything but the videos posted?

also, what's the point of tagging movies as watched? I'm looking for a way to browse all unwatched movies but not seeing it... it'd be nice if I could configure the homepage to make unwatched movies or shows show up there rather than the random web content they have.

so I finally got my shares indexing after opening up some ports and what not...

so far so good, just a few things bugging me that I'm hoping they'll resolve in future releases. Here's my "irritation list" at the moment.

  • not all movies are being indexed
  • hard to tell when you reschedule it to scan when it's actually going to scan or if it'll fix file renames and folder.jpg changes
  • when you identify movies it almost always adds the cover art for the previous movie you identified and then you have to go back in and do it a second time to fix it.
  • no way to remove movies or music that you don't want displayed in the interface... ie: I have a bunch of music in my music folder that is maybe single tracks by obscure artists or remixes and for sake of OCD'ness I'd like to just clean house from the boxee interface by telling it to not index certain files.
  • no way to add unidentified files to your library if they don't come up in a search
  • no way to remove unidentified files from the unidentified list if you want to just get rid of them (ie: quite a few video samples showing up in my movie folders)
  • wish there was a way to change the featured content displayed on the homepage... like to unwatched shows or movies I have or something more relevant to what I want to see.
  • in the main navigation bar it only displays shows and movies... why not music and photos as well? those are the 4 main categories that are indexed, why should I have to go into files to navigate to music?
  • apps seem to have to be loaded/installed every time I use boxee, why can't it cache them?
  • no way to manually rename files or rearrange them in the interface... ie, for trilogies they're displayed in alphabetical when you'd want them to be chronological.
  • minor annoyance but the main button on the remote is positioned dead center, makes it difficult to tell which way you're holding the remote when you pick it up without looking... typically I find myself scrolling up when I meant to scroll down or vice versa before flipping it around.

hoping most of these will be resolved in a future update, other than that it's an amazing device with a ton of potential. I've watched a few movies on it so far and it seems to play 1080p mkv files over wireless without any major issues other than maybe having to buffer once every 20 minutes or so, I'm assuming if I could run a network cable to it that'd be resolved.

Ive been using mine for 2 days now, and I am liking it more and more.

My major gripes are over issues that are well known, (aspect) and should be resolved in service pack 3.

My other issues seem to be self inflicted, but im still working with them.

I have around 700 rips of my own DVD and Blu Ray collection, and I was lazy when naming them, and didnt add the year in parenthesis.

My extensive horror collection means I have 2-3 movies with the same title, but different productions from different years.

I tried using theRenamer, and was very pleased. It only mis-identified a few. It renamed my whole library with the correct imdb entry, so when I re scanned with boxee, only about 3 of 700 titles were missed.

One cool feature I like for boxee is this: If you have 3 versions of 1 movie (example: Blade Runner) it only creates one cover art icon. Then when you click the icon you can select which version, based on the file name. It keeps the cover art gallery looking clean.

I would really like it if they added themoviedb cover art scraper. The imdb poster gallery is horrendous. Lots of early 90's VHS covers in there, especially on older horror movies.

I miss my original theatrical cover art, provided by themoviedb.

any idea of how to remove a cover added by boxee to replace it with a folder.jpg? I've got the LoTR trilogy and two of the covers are in one style while a third is a different style because boxee went with the database art rather than the folder.jpg...

I love mine so far... use it for 70% local content. It handles my MKV files amazingly well even over wireless.

It still has a little polishing that needs to take place but I have faith that they'll iron things out.

I'm also a huge fan of the Watch Later bookmarklet, use it all the time at work when I stumble on something I want to wait to watch when I get home.

The Vudu app (while expensive) is also pretty stellar... we watched a movie last night in standard definition (wasn't an action flick so didn't care if it was in HD) and the standard definition stream looked better than DVD in my opinion... really great quality.

I've also been watching the Daily Show through their app which looks/works great and I'm really liking the "Friend Feed" social element for killing time browsing what friends have posted to facebook or twitter.

The one app that I think needs some serious improvement (but in no way is it Boxee's fault) is the Youtube app... it's pretty garbage as was previously mentioned.

edit: oh, and the true test for me that it's passed with flying colors was the girlfriend test... she never used to try to figure out how to play videos from my PC and move them to the secondary display but she's using the boxee regularly and is totally comfortable with it.

If boxee could change those two issues, it would be almost perfect in it's current state (plus netflix etc).

Also, for about 1/2 my mkv's, it seems to enable subtitles by default. I'm using the latest stable firmware. I thought this was fixed.

you should be able to choose where it scrapes from as well as choose to manually override any of the art in my opinion... I'm alright with my movies and tv shows at the moment (with the exception of the occasional one missing any info) but I'd much rather have a way to remove music/movies/shows from being displayed and a way to manually add artist art for all of the bands I have that don't have any entries in the database. for that matter I'm not even sure which database it's pulling artist art from.

Also if I have some obscure documentary or whatever that it can't find art for I wanted the ability to add my own.

I'm pretty sure (could be mistaken, it's been a long time since I cleaned up my art) that so long as you add a folder.jpg it will use that in place of pulling in from imdb.

Can anyone suggest a good way to perform a connection test for the box?

I've been able to stream 720p and 1080p mkv rips just fine for a long time now with my configuration, maybe getting a handful of buffers throughout a movie but nothing terrible. Last night however I tried to watch a 720p rip and it was buffering literally every minute or two making the movie for all intents and purposes unwatchable.

My configuration isn't ideal but it's worked in the past... Here's how I have it set up.

Boxee is hardwired to my wireless router next to the tv downstairs which is where my cable modem is. Computer is upstairs connected via 802.11n, movies are on a drobo external drive connected to the computer via eSATA.

I can only imagine the issue is with my wireless signal rather than the eSATA connection to the drobo, but I don't really have an easy way to confirm what speed my drobo is pulling from my computer. If it turned out the issue was actually with the eSATA connection then I could certainly copy movies over to an internal drive but I'd rather not have to do that every time I want to watch a movie.

Thoughts?

so it's been a while since I've checked this thread, but I have to ask, is the boxee firmware getting worse or something? did they push out a bad update?

My network connectivity has been atrocious lately. My boxee box, cable modem, and router are downstairs all directly connected, my main desktop pc with my media on it is upstairs connected to my router wirelessly. I never seem to have any issues with connecting to the internet on my PC, 802.11n seems to be plenty fast. But lately my boxee box can't seem to connect to anything worth a poo poo. streaming videos from my PC buffer far too frequently but even if that could be chalked up to wireless issues the thing that is even more frustrating is that netflix, vudu, and all of my other apps basically just won't connect at all, or they'll start to connect and then timeout.

My girlfriend used to love the boxee and now she's getting pissed off because it never works when she wants to watch netflix, thankfully I have a PS3 as well which runs netflix and vudu flawlessly but I'm really beginning to feel like my boxee box is a paperweight if I can't count on it to play basic media and run apps without choking.

A few months ago I would recommend this thing emphatically but I definitely can't do that in it's current state. Are they poised to release an update or something?

I think I'll try to take a video showing how my user experience is at the moment. Basically even immediately after a reboot I still have major connection issues, movie and show graphics won't fully load, netflix, vudu, etc. won't load, I can maybe stream a movie for a few minutes before it freezes up or starts buffering like mad.

I'm wondering if there aren't some network preferences in the settings that I'm overlooking or something but it's directly connected to the router so it's not like it's a wireless configuration issue, also it was working more or less fine a few months ago with nothing having changed since.

really frustrating.

Those of you complaining about the boxee being slow, where is your media stored (local hdd, lovely nas, good nas, bitchin' fileserver), how is it accessed (wired/b/g/n), and how much do you have and is it all named correctly for scanning?

My local media is stored on a drobo connected to my desktop pc via eSATA. My desktop PC is connected to my router via wireless-N which is connected directly to my boxee. 1080p and often 720p video buffers more regularly than I'd like. I don't think it's the drobo though as playing videos on my internal HDD seems to yield similar performance. It's not until I actually put the video on a thumb drive and plug it into the boxee directly that any buffering issues go away.

All of my media has been renamed using ember and all cover-art is included. Boxee still takes forever to pull this in. I probably only have ~200 movies in my movie folders, broken into an HD and an SD folder and organized into folders by movie title within those.

The problem however is that the performance isn't only bad for connecting to local content. It's also been awful for connecting to online content. It usually takes ~10-30 seconds for the preview images of the featured content on the homepage to load (if it even loads at all). Additionally pretty much all of the app logos take forever to load, and then when I go to run an app that won't even be reliable. I've tried using the netflix and vudu apps a few times in the past week and they take forever to load and then may or may not even load enough movie cover art for me to continue browsing.

If the issues were purely with local content it'd be one thing, but the performance is pretty much universally bad at this point.

I definitely wouldn't have purchased this device if I thought the workflow would have to be something janky where I had to go out and buy a separate external hdd to serve as a temporary holding area for media I actually wanted to watch on the boxee. been a while since I've followed this thread so forgive me if this is a common question.

Are people still having issues with cover art/album art/app icons caching?

The last release dramatically improved streaming for me, the buffering issues seem to have gotten a lot better but my movie art still loads incredibly slowly as I'm browsing. I only have ~350 movies but it still seems to be choking.

Is there a setting I should be changing? should I clear my cache and let it rebuild or something?

I really wish they'd enable thumb-drive caching and be done with it, it's probably my single biggest complaint about the boxee UI now.
