syphon posted:To start things off, the PenFed Visa Platinum Cashback Rewards (https://www.penfed.org/productsAndR...RewardCards.asp) looks awesome, but I'm not a member and I don't know how I can become one. It says I can join the NMFA for a 'low' fee (but it doesn't say that that fee is, and I have to actually fill out the app to see it), and I'm not sure what I'd be signing up for by joining. I saw this one in another thread and signed up. Just got approved, so we'll see how good it is. The fee was $30 (or it's free if you're ex-miltary.) And yeah, I'm not sure exactly what I signed up for. But I'm thinking about moving my checking account to them too.

syphon posted:Someone in the other thread also mentioned getting declined for a Credit Card with PenFed. Do you have to sign up with NMFA before you even apply for the credit card, or do you apply for both at the same time. It's technically two separate things, I think. But you can do it all at once. Signing up with NMFA happens immediately through the web site. They send an email right away and then you can click through that and apply for the card.

syphon posted:What I'm saying is, I don't want to sign up for the NMFA (and pay for it) only to be declined for a credit card from PenFed, ya know? Ah yeah, I don't think that's an option. But your best bet is probably to give their customer support a call and see if they can do that.

ZeroAX posted:I had to apply 3 times to penfed before getting accepted. I think I asked for 5K and 2K and got denied. They finally accepted me when I only asked for $500 They just denied you? I always ask for way more than I want, so I asked for a large sum of money and they emailed me asking if half that was okay. The card should be here any day now!

Shalinor posted:Does the PenFed (or really any of the decent cards in this thread) have decent billpay services? They do have free bill pay and the checking account looks fairly fee-free except for a $500 minimum balance. I applied for one today, so I can report back on how good the bill pay is in a few weeks. However, it doesn't seem to have any rewards, and appears to be limited to 4,000 in-house billers, unless you pay $5/month for "premium" bill pay.

Princess Putout posted:Pen Fed's underwriters as a rule are pretty tightassed about credit cards. Limits too? And I know closing big cards you've had a while hurts the credit score a bit, but would that likely result in Pen Fed giving me a higher limit? I ask because I have a $40K limit on my main Citi card. I never carry a balance. PenFed approved me for just $11K. That's more than plenty for my use, but there's something comforting about knowing I have a $40K credit line available if poo poo really hits the fan, so I'm hesitant to get rid of it unless there's a decent chance someone else will give it to me.

Wow, it sounds like you had it bad. I also hit my credit limit with PenFed. I called and immediately made a payment over the phone. Since I was a new customer, they ended up holding my payment for 10 business days, so I was without my card for about a week. Understandable I guess, but quite annoying since I had it hooked up to various autopays like iTunes and Amazon.

I used the Amazon card for a long time and really like it. I finally switched over to PFCU because I just got too aggravated by having to dig the rewards checks out of the mail and type the codes into the Amazon web site. I'm glad to see they are doing statement credit now, and may switch back. That's still not as nice as PFCU's automatic credit system, but I think it will work out to a greater percentage back for me.

I've been using Penfed's Gas/Cash Rewards Visa for a while now, but I'm not happy with their 2% Foreign Transaction Fee. I'm doing quite a bit of travel soon; does anyone know a good card with some rewards and no Foreign Transaction Fee, preferably from a credit union or smaller bank?

soggybagel posted:Well the Venture card from Capital One has no transaction fee and pretty good rewards. It is not from a credit union or small bank though. Thanks. This looks like a good card, but it still has a 2% foreign transaction fee.

kaishek posted:It does not, actually - the standard Cap One cards do, but the Venture card does not. Ah yes, I see that now. I think I downloaded the wrong T&C. Thanks!

Shooting Blanks posted:You've already nailed it - you need to find a card that doesn't have a foreign transaction fee. It's typically 1%-3% of the purchase total, which can add up really quickly. I have one of the Capital One cards (No Hassle Rewards) and it indeed has no foreign transaction fees. It's also nice that you can enter your travel plans on the web site without having to call which will in theory prevent the fraud department from flagging it (my attempt to charge through an Indian travel web site while in India still trigger it though).

GFBeach posted:After reading the recommendations from this thread, I got a PenFed Cash Rewards card. Whoa PenFed has a credit card with no foreign transaction fees? I have a Cash Rewards card that I've had for a while and used to charge a foreign transaction fee. Just went back and checked my old statements - they charged me a 2% fee on a foreign charge in June, but not on one for October, so they must have removed the fee recently. I love the PenFed card since it just credits the rewards with each statement - no vouchers or points to mess with and no having to wait until the end of the year. I guess I can ditch my Capital One card and go back to using that for everything.

I've been trying to get a card embedded with a smart chip for a long time and I'm not sure it's so difficult, given that all European cards have this and that some US retailers even have readers yet. Is anyone aware of a decent US-based card with one? The SPG Amex used to offer them and I have been on their waiting list for months trying to get one. However, today they told me their policy changed and they only offer them on Platinum and Corporate accounts.

I have about a pretty sizable commute so the gas rewards will help out a ton, and although I didn't realize this when I signed up for the card, the no foreign transaction fees will be quite convenient as well.
