By "works fine" I meant has no frame dips, constant 55-60 preferably. The game has lots of frame dips for me, and it's harder to play in slow-mo than it is at normal speed.

I'm no AMD expert but that sounds pretty old, not sure how it compares to my old E6420 but that GPU wasn't hot poo poo 4 years ago exactly either. You might get some decent frame rates out of 2D games like Disgaea 1-2 though.

Gabest have been making some relatively minor GSDX commits, including a tiny speedup. Lots of other minor tweaks and bugfixes that don't amount to a lot that's tangible for the end-user.

Yea or nay for this as a CPU recommendation for PCSX2? AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (3.4GHz Socket AM3 quad-core)

I'm currently using an AMD Athlon dual-core 64-bit (2.5 GHz, Socket AM2 dual-core)*, but my motherboard claims to support both CPUs, and I have til Tuesday night-into-Wednesday-morning to apply a $10 discount code towards the 965.

* The OEM box I've found in my house claims AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+, but the "monitoring/stats" programs on my computer (i.e. Core Temp) claim "Athlon X2 5050e," hence the above caveat.

It may WORK with PCSX2 if you have it already, but you're throwing good money after bad if you're BUYING it specifically for PCSX2.

AMD's Bulldozer chips are supposed to support the instruction sets that PCSX2 uses to be a good emulator (that Intel has and AMD hasn't released yet), but those aren't for a while, and they won't be compatible with your motherboard.

Buy an Athlon II 640 (or a Phenom II 840 - which is basically an Athlon 650 that was named after AMD caught whatever name cancer Intel and nVidia have) if you need an upgrade for other things now, and deal with what performance you get. Save up for an i5-2500K and all the other crap you need to buy with it if you can (or if you can just drop that kind of money out of the blue).

But don't buy an AMD chip for PCSX2. Please.

I have and Athlon X4 with a Radeon 5770. My experience, so far (running 0.9.7):

- ICO ran prefectly, iei

- Katamari runs alright, but then sometimes slows down. Might have to tweak to configs a little.

- Shadow of the Colossus was simply unplayable at first, then af a number of tweaks, I got a decent speed (almost the same as in the console, probably a little slower), but during the FMVs the audio is out-of-sync.

So, yeah I can play, but is far from an easy and smooth experience.

^^^^ Phenom II X4 is overall much better than the Athlon X4, so even those games run fairly well on it, in my experience.

I have a Phenom II X4 945 non-black (mistake on my part), and it pretty much runs fine. Most games run at full speed with some flair attached. Oddly enough, the game that gives me the most trouble is probably Global Defence Force, which is relatively lo-fi. It chokes on real hardware, though. Of course, as Sir Unimaginative says, it's not the best chip for PCSX2, but I didn't buy it just to emulate games. The Phenom II X4 series is a great bang-for-the-buck value and is coincidentally capable of running most PS2 games fine, so I recommend it as long as you're not buying it just for PCSX2. But I wouldn't recommend buying any hardware just for PCSX2, that's just downright foolish. Buy a drat PS2.

If you wish to expand into other areas like GC/Wii emulation, Dolphin is a little bit hit or miss on it. Most gamecube games run fine, and some Wii games run fine, but some don't, and it's not really good enough for the LLE DSP plugin (at least mine isn't, maybe you could pull it off if you overclock the 965). I at least heard one person with a 965 say that he can run Sonic Colors full speed, which I can't.

AMD UPDATE:

3.4GHz is the magic line for Athlon II/Phenom II. That may change with Bulldozer, since that will have all of Intel's latest extensions, or it may not. (Okay, it may actually be WORSE given that the front-end and FPU are pair-shared.)

Point is: if you already have an AMD chip and can get it to 3.4 you're probably fine, but if you're buying AMD for PCSX2 you're insane.
Based on this statement from you earlier, the two extra cores should help me in other games that do make use of them, so I might as well up the clock speed while I'm at it (I hope the L3 cache helps, as the lack thereof keeps me from buying a Propus), as I'd like for the KOEI Warriors games to not nosedive by 20 fps when I'm playing (60 fps in menus, 40 fps in gameplay).

quote:

AMD's Bulldozer chips are supposed to support the instruction sets that PCSX2 uses to be a good emulator (that Intel has and AMD hasn't released yet), but those aren't for a while, and they won't be compatible with your motherboard.
I'm aware of this, but the idea/concept is to hop on the CPU while I can, and then pick up an AM3-compatible Bulldozer board when those come out... they would be, right?

(That is, I hope that they keep the "AM3 Ready!" that my AM2+ board has, it's what kept me from jumping onto getting an AM3 board, that supposedly they don't support AM2 or something.)

It doesn't help that my existing motherboard's PS/2 keyboard port already died and my onboard ethernet port/NIC may be going too (or so the diagnosis is on the Home Networking Megathread in SH/SC, this is apparently common).

I also have a 5770 like Elias_Maluco, and as Dr. Video Games 0031 put it:

Dr. Video Games 0031 posted:

I'm not planning to get a Sandy Bridge CPU, so long as modern PC gaming leaves something for those of us who don't want an Intel/NVIDIA monopoly. [/generalizing]

The Razer Onza is approaching normal release which prompted me to check up on the price in ye ol' Yurop.

To start it off Razer store UK site has it at 1:1 Dollar Euro conversion despite a 30% value difference in USD / EUR and a 18 euro shipping cost on top of that, drat that's harsh ... until I look at the pricing in Swedish online shops.

Here the TE version costs no less than 109 dollars, or 14 SEK : 1 dollar conversion (real conversion: 6.35 SEK : 1 US) and that's without shipping cost (another 8 bucks).

So to clarify, it would STILL be cheaper (by nearly 20%) for me to order from the UK or Germany and eat the bullshit USD:EUR conversion on top of the 18 Euro DHL express shipping cost than to buy it from a local internet store

There's gotta be a cheaper way.

Probably either Amazon.com or .co.uk, if the co.uk gets it. Otherwise a 20% VAT charge, hmm.

Looking around some more, I found it plays on Software, at least around 20fps on my system.

But I want to run it on hardware! If you do, even with the latest builds all it does is just either gives you a black screen or you can't even see the main menu.

I saw some people playing it with poo poo like i7s on youtube at mostly full speed which I find hilarious.

As mentioned in this thread, performance in PCSX2 is the least of my problems... although my first sign that something was wrong was when PCSX2 performance got worse, not better. - Portable Mode has been fixed and you can now change from Standard Mode (reads configuration from My Documents) to Portable Mode (reads from wherever pcsx2.exe is located). To switch to portable mode, simply add an empty portable.ini to your PCSX2 directory (included by default in my packs)
- Too many GameDB updates to count
- mVU minmax speedhack removed
- Game fixes galore
- GSdx: memory leak fix, window title fix, updated mipmapping, bunch of other fixes (gabest is back )
