Anyone have any recommendations on horror films? I've watched plenty on Netflix and I feel like I've gone dry on streamable horror films that are enjoyable to watch. Not necessarily good films, but solid films that aren't too low-budget or campy.

Speaking of which, check out Doghouse.

Give Dagon a try. It's a surprisingly good adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Really, I thought it was going to be just another horrible low-budget horror flick and I walked away pleasantly surprised.

I've seen it and you're absolutely right; the beginning had some low-budget CGI that almost turned me away from it but I'm glad I stuck with it. Awesome film.

Also, more great horror, The Ward a newer John Carpenter film about a girl admitted to an insane asylum for women who comes to learn about a malicious ghost that starts messing with them. Seems like the typical set-up but it's a good watch.

I don't know if this was a recent addition but check out Senna, it's a film about F1 racing driver Ayrton Senna's life. The whole thing is composed of archival footage and edited beautifully. If you're not into F1 it's still an amazing watch because of Senna was an amazing and humble person and his life is a touching story in itself.

Also on the horror front, watch Dead and Buried. It's from the 80s, about a small town where people are getting murdered and come back as residents of the town. The local sheriff investigates and tries figuring out what the gently caress is up. It's not scary but has good atmosphere and the story is decent.

Agreed. I was incredibly underwhelmed with it. I also got pretty confused when I had my horror buff friends arguing me on it and trying to insist that it was good. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever watched but it was incredibly mediocre.

I'm surprised a bunch of people didn't like it on here, I think it's enjoyable for people who just watch a lot of horror because most of it tends to be below mediocrity and I found The Ward to at least be enjoyable. Nothing great, but definitely fun to watch.

Anyway, another horror/thriller suggestion, The Perfect Host. A guy commits a bank job and heads to a suburban neighborhood to try and hide away. He stumbles upon a bachelor and fools him into thinking he's a friend of a friend and let's him into the house. Said resident, played by David Hyde Pierce (of Frasier fame) is a tiny bit batshit and things take some strange twists.

Also, the old Sean Connery James Bond films are up again for instant watch but I tried watching Diamonds are Forever and the framerate is absolutely loving horrid. So bad I couldn't keep watching because it was headache inducing. I remember the same thing happening with another old Bond film and I don't know what it is about them. I'm pretty sure the films aren't supposed to be like that, right?

On the advice of my brother I checked out The Troll Hunter and I really enjoyed it.

Going to second this, great film.

If you're into shows like Survivorman and Man vs. Wild, check out Dual Survival. The first season is up so far and it's pretty good; it stars a former military Sniper, Dave, who's kinda gung-ho but can hunt well and his inverse, Cody, who's a ecofriendly survivalist built like a god drat linebacker and can build great shelters. They make a pretty good team and interesting watch.

If you're in the mood for a solid horror film, check out Atrocious, a Spanish film about two siblings that go to a vacation home with their parents. The house has a sort of hedgemaze/tree maze on the property that's chained off, the kids are inquisitive and recently heard a horror story about a ghost of a woman that'll lead those lost in the maze out so they go and check it out. They also film everything, so the whole film is from the view point of their camera, "home-movie" style. There's some great tension throughout but sometimes it's so dark it's impossible to see what the hell is going on but that's not too frequent.

So, I went in search of some good documentaries and stumbled upon A Complete History of My Sexual Failures, which is about a guy who tries to interview all his ex-girlfriends about why they dumped him. They pretty much all just poo poo on his personality, and it really shows why in a lot of his talking heads.

It has a lot of really uncomfortable scenes though, including a scene where he visits a sex dungeon and gets whipped a bunch, and worse: a scene where he takes "six or seven" viagra with a whole lot of alcohol and wanders the streets begging random women to have sex with him until he gets arrested.

Worth seeing? Maybe. It's only like an hour and a half long though, so might as well.

So this is Goon: The Movie?

I just tried watching High School of the Dead and it made me realize that never getting into anime was a good decision. It would actually be a decent horror show if every scene didn't have an obligatory teen girl upskirt shot or bouncing set of tits. Every damned scene.

I just don't get it.

Well, that's the point. It's a fan service anime, 100%.

The Wild Hunt is a strange film, it's about a guy who's girlfriend is getting tired of the situation and just wants out, so she breaks up with him and stays with her LARPing community. His brother is a major player among the LARPers but he doesn't do it himself, yet he somewhat has to in order to enter and find her. At first the film feels like a drama due to the situation and cinematography, but it also has some funny dialogue with some of the characters, along with the "referees" who state the rules during battle and such make it seem a bit goofy (because hey, it's LARPing). But then it starts turning to a pretty dark film and by the end you kinda go "how the gently caress did I get here?"

It's a bit slow in the beginning but it's a loving awesome film. Watch this poo poo.

I watched the most recent show available on Netflix and was horrified to discover that this dude is still doing that single act that he came up with in the early nineties. He's obviously a talented performer; I wish he'd have spent the last two decades coming up with new material.

I said the same thing when I watched this, what I really want to find is his Lounge Lizards set I saw on Comedy Central once, he had some different material and one bit I really liked with a knife that he'd cut himself with to freak the audience out and it looked disturbingly real. I can't find that special anywhere.

Just watched Darkon, meh, the production quality was pretty mediocre and some of the people in the game have serious god drat issues. It's a good insight into LARPing but it really just makes it look goofy and laughable.

Yes, those are all the things that make the movie good.

If you want a documentary that explores the well adjusted grownups who spend large portions of their lives dressing up in silly outfits and getting angry at fake battles and NOT looking silly, you probably need to find a documentary on alternate universes.

I was expecting the film to play out like the beginning sequence which was shot to look like a film. That would have been neat, keep all of the roleplaying stuff well filmed and movie-esque and make the interviews look like the documentary that it actually is. It's the lovely production of the film that kills it for me the most, everything is terribly shot.

Quick question; when you're viewing a season of a series each episode has a progress bar (if you've watched them), sometimes the progress bar is red instead of gray, is there a reason behind this?

Sire Oblivion

That's what I thought it was too, but all of the episodes with gray bars aren't fully watched because I stopped at the start of the credits, same goes for the episode with the red bar.

If you're watching a Donnie Yen movie for the plot, you're doing it wrong.

Well when more than half the film is dialogue trying to sell you on any sort of plot it's a tad hard to ignore. They should really just make films like these hour long action scenes with a little plot as possible, like "Cop is chasing a dude through a building" and the action just takes off from there. No bullshit development or anything, just rear end kicking the whole way through.

I didn't see Don't Be Afraid of the Dark mentioned yet. It was ok, but kind of disappointing when you see "them" (trying to avoid spoilers, referring to what hangs out "in the dark"). I didn't feel like it was a waste of an hour and a half, but I am glad I didn't spend money on it in the theater.

The Perfect Host, however, was amazing. Several unexpected twists, and David Hyde Pierce is perfect in it. Highly recommended if you want something suspenseful to watch that's also written pretty well.

Going to agree on both of these accounts.

The Caller, pretty decent horror/thriller about a woman that moves into an apartment and starts getting pestering phone calls from an old woman looking for someone. Eventually the old woman starts getting creepy and forceful. It's not the greatest horror film but it's pretty well written and a really fun watch.

Just finished up The Hunter, and god drat it's really good. Willem Dafoe is a hunter/tracker sent to Tazmania to find the now extinct Tasmanian Tiger, for a company wanting it's organs and such for study. The plot makes it sound like a bad sci-fi or action film, but it's a really good drama film.

Really? I rather enjoyed the movie. I thought it did a great job of building tension and paranoia. When every one else started going crazy I was genuinely scared and in awe. It doesn't explain anything which is a downside to it but I think everything else was just great.

It starts off pretty good and the photography is nice, but I stopped really caring when the Corridor literally turns out to be some "box of energy" from someone's first rendering project and the plot just kinda goes to poo poo after that. I just completely lost interest a little bit in.
