I came home earlier today, and my neighbors across the hall still had their door open a bit (I have no idea why, they do it a lot and it causes a lot of noise), and one of their dogs (a shih tzu I think, something small) ran into my unit. I have a cat that is very territorial, and does not like dogs at all. Since I was just getting home, my cat was sitting on my couch near the door waiting for me, and as soon as the dog came in my cat went into attack mode. She ended up swiping the dog across the face, giving him some cuts (her next nail trim is tomorrow). Now my neighbors are trying to say I'm responsible for any vet bills for the dog, because it was my cat that hurt the dog. However, the dog came into my unit (which I own, not rent), and I never gave consent for the dog to even come in (the thing just ran right in). I told them it isn't my responsibility to keep their dog out of my place or the hallways, but it is theirs. Am I responsible for this? I live in Massachusetts if that is applicable.

I'm not your lawyer and I know no Mass law but I would laugh in their face.

Tell them their dog just got a butt kicking from a cat and the dog should feel bad and they should feel bad.

I would be so tempted to tell them that their yapper poo poo/pissed on the floor and that they're responsible for the damages.

I'm sure your cat is traumatized and needs extensive psychological help. There's probably some soft tissue damage, too. Vet bills? Did your cat pop one of the dog's eyes out or something?

Not really that deep, but they broke the skin, but no worries for me because my cat recently had her shots updated. My cat does NOT LIKE DOGS. She did the same thing to my sister's dog, even when I warned my sister. However, after the attack, all she did was look up at me while licking her paws, looking strangely happy. I was pretty sure I was right that I shouldn't care and should tell them off, but I just wanted to be sure. I was pretty close to telling them off. This same unit has been a problem in my building. I'm on the condo association board in my small, 26 unit building. I have had complaints from the people below them and next to them, which are on file, along with complaints from myself as well (I know this sounds petty but this is just the way things need to be done to be escalated -- we have tried just talking to them for over 8 months now). Basically they leave their dogs alone a lot, and they constantly bark. The dogs sometimes get out and run in the hallways, and their kids run around and scream in the hallways. One also broke a stair when messing around with roller blades on (what the gently caress?). So, now I have to meet with the other two board members to decide who has to take all of this to the management company to basically start the process of getting them kicked out, since they only rent. From here they will get a letter saying to shape up in a month or you're out.

These people are obviously bad neighbours, who probably realise that everyone's complaining about them, and are just trying to make a fuss about a trivial incident so they have some mud to sling back. I can't believe there's a court in the world that would take this seriously, so I would just tell them to get lost. Disclaimer - I am not your lawyer or legally qualified where you are etc., etc.

I can't believe there's a court in the world that would take this seriously, so I would just tell them to get lost. Met with the other condo board members -- I'm the lucky one that gets to go talk to the management company! Mostly because I'm one of the ones with complaints on file, and I'm on a little break before summer classes start when my TA position starts. Before I could even say to them "go ahead, call the police, I don't care" they did. This morning, a local cop knocked on my door. I went outside, talked to him, and explained what happened. They admitted that the dog was in my unit, but they also said that my cat was a "feral nuisance". Now I know the policy is generally don't talk to cops (at least from what I've seen in some threads on here) but I had nothing to hide whatsoever. I excused myself for a second, asked my neighbors to close their door, went in my unit, grabbed my cat and her tag showing her last rabies vaccine, which was 2 months ago. Like I said my cat hates dogs, but I didn't say that she loves everyone else, and is a princess for attention. I brought her out, showed the officer that my 7 lb cat is not a "feral nuisance" (as she was licking my face and nuzzling up with me) and her rabies vaccination info. Officer pat my cat on the head, which she returned by licking his hand. This is when the officer also saw that my cat has no teeth (had them removed due to stomatitis 2 months ago). At this point I was asked if I'd like to file a complaint. I said there was no damage to my unit and my cat is fine, so no. I just told him that the condo association is already going through the proper channels for eviction. My neighbors were present throughout all of this. Ladies and gentleman, the cat of "death and danger": ![]() e: The cat was unavailable for further questioning after I posted. She is much too busy taking a nap on my bed.
