The Soup is a weekly round-up the best/worst in reality TV, soap operas, talk shows, and whatever sort insanity that is broadcast weekly. It features all sorts of great segments, inside jokes, inside not-jokes, and dreamy host Joel McHale. Prior to Joel...

wikipedia posted:

Hosts included Greg Kinnear (1991–1995, the final year concurrent with his hosting stint on NBC's now-defunct late night series Later), John Henson (1995–1999), Hal Sparks (1999–2000) and Aisha Tyler (2001–2002). Various celebrities filled in as guest hosts from 2000 to fall 2001, with Donna D'Errico standing-in regularly for summer 2001. Guest hosts included Ryan Seacrest, Roger Lodge, Janeane Garofalo, Jenna Jameson, Jason Lester, John Henstein, Scott Lasky, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Teri Garr, and Survivor contestant Susan Hawk.

Never refer to it as "Talk Soup".

From the greatest bedroom filmmaker of our times, director of "Wigga Please", "Feminazis II: Space Master Race", comes "Video Game: The Movie: The Game: The Movie". Directed by Alan Smithee. Written by Alan Smithee. Starring Alan Smithee. Produced by Skoolmunkee

I can't believe we don't already have a thread for the closest thing to an SA tv show (except the host is way too good looking). What the hell happened to Jon Henson anyway?

I also watch it every week, but it's mainly because of the lady. Joel McHale is pretty funny, but some of the jokes are extremely long-winded and overblown.

I can't argue with the quality clips, though.

I always love it when they throw in a Seacrest reference out of nowhere.

Also, the Roman Polanski joke Joel made a while back was amazing.

I like how relaxed it is. If Joel breaks a joke because he's laughing so hard, he just gives the signal to fastforward the prompter and they keep going.

The crew playing a different song everytime for the "My Stories" intro bit always gets him and makes me laugh.

Absolutely

I came across it by accident and i had just started watching Community so stuck around and now I am hooked, but i have missed so many eps which i will never get the chance to see. I think i probably miss a lot of the jokes because I am in Australia but the way he gives so much poo poo to Ryan Seacrest is brilliant, and i don't even really know who he is. And all the in jokes are great, most of these shows they rip on are not even shown here and I am usually stunned by the sheer amount of ridiculous reality shows on (I Love Toy Trains)

What bothers me is that so many things are edited, like i figure he gets out a gun and shoots that intern guy, but the gun is blurred out and the sound is edited out also, is it the same in the US?

Uh no, that's really weird. I wouldn't expect Australia to be that uptight about guns. Don't you guys have a lot of hunters there?

Haha, what? No, not at all. Nothing is blurred or beeped and they always just laugh at how terribly the guy dying lined up with the sound effect or something. Is Australian gov't really that lovely?

Australia is usually much more relaxed when it comes to what we show on TV compared to the U.S. Shows with heaps of violence and language that are only shown on Cable in the US (like HBO) are shown on our free-to-air channels so i dont know why this is censored in particular, seems really strange to me.

It's the unnest of the un-jokes. Who(m?)ever is blurring this out doesn't get comedy.

The Soup is one of the few reasons to turn on the TV. I can't help but find it ironic that the show is on E, and yet it lampoons basically everything that E produces or represents.

Stains was a classic moment. I must of watched that clip dozens of times. I love all the Seagal riffs... I just wish that he would come on the show; although apparently Seagal is too good for the Soup. Which is odd, considering the shlock that he puts out on a yearly basis.

It's not just Australia that has censorship, I get it here in the UK as well.

It's pretty much the same thing, they blur out the Gun and a couple of other things (The logo on the Steven Segal can is blurred over for example - but you can't fool me, I'd recognize that can anywhere).

And he's grating on that. I like Wipeout, because I like watching annoying people hurt themselves, but the straight guy is funnier than him. His entire gimmick for the show I guess is that he has an IQ of 70, I don't know if it's sadder that he took such a demeaning job, or that it's the only job he could get.

I think so. I never watched the show when Hal Sparks was involved, because if VH1's clip montage show countdowns are any indication, he most likely wasn't very funny on The Soup, either.

To be fair, no one on those godawful clip shows are particularly funny, let alone entertaining, but I do remember him being pretty funny on Talk Soup. Unfortunately all I can find on youtube are a couple of skits he did on the show, and those have always been somewhat painful to watch no matter who hosts. I'd rather just watch them talk poo poo about all the awful stuff on TV the entire time, it's not like there's a shortage of material to work with.
