That kind of confused me reading it the first time through. I was like "So what happened, did he break it or absorb it into his body or what?" I'm going with absorbed, but it's still rather unclear.

He took the samurai dude's stab in to his palm (possibly deliberately) and it went all the way up his arm, which he then hardened and moved to break the sword. That is one epic gently caress you move.

Regarding that special chapter though... I think the most hilarious thing amidst all the is the fact that Natsu dressed up in her clothes. That is seriously the silliest drat thing

Well, that's a nice twist. Mest is still sort of an enemy, but it looks like he'll have to join forces with Fairy Tail for the short term. Can't wait for the arc to start really heating up.

Is anyone else concerned about how stupidly-easy it was for the evil guild to utterly destroy a ship full of supposedly high-level mages on their way to the island to arrest a group of supposedly high-level mages? That was just too easy.

It's industry standard. The only point of powerful non-protagonists is to get their asses kicked in order to demonstrate how totally badass and powerful the new villains are.

The mages were superpowerful but the ship was not! Also they all don't know how to swim.

Alternatively they do know how to swim, and they all turn up (bedraggled and pissed, naturally) just in time to turn the tide later on. Unlikely though.

As soon as Mest pointed out a magical battleship I knew it was going to explode at any moment. Anyone who didn't see that coming should probably read the manga (or at least the beginning of the Nirvana arc) over.

On the other hand Mest being a member of the new council instead of the dark guild did honestly surprise me. Well played Mashima.

Mest is a weiner, but apparently not a Gerard.

Well, color me surprised. Will this be the first major arc since the demon island to avoid a Gerard appearance?

There sure are a lot of people in this thread who think having a twist by heavily hinting at one thing and giving no evidence whatsoever of what it really is is great writing. It's more interesting than the obvious possibility, but not exactly a masterful narrative technique.

I just realized that the erza/mirajane exam fights defy the normal shounen ONE VERSUS ONE ONLY thing. Except since the people fighting aren't really main character's and Natsu's fight was 1v1 it doesn't really matter

Any sort of plot twist that doesn't involve a surprise Gerard appearance is breaking new ground for FT.

I thought a chapter just before this arc started up involved the council meeting and talking about disbanding fairy tail? It's not out of left field unless my memory is worse than I thought.

Still dancing, still singing, and still surprised by joy.

Ooh, the plot thickens! The heavy hitters of a Dark Guild and the law on the island? Shaping up to be a good one!

And, yeah, we haven't seen anything genius from this manga thus far, but the writing and characters have been consistently entertaining for... well, for pretty much the whole series for me. Yes, Gerard was annoying and it's too much to hope we won't see him again, but he has not reached the levels of toxicity and instantly-groaning Oh-Christ-Not-You-Again that other *coughSasukecough* shounen *hackAizenwheeze* characters in the other big series have reached of late.

Yasser Arafatwa: No sir, you are not wrong and nor is your memory bad; we have indeed heard of the Magic Guild moving against Fary Tail, making this particular plot twist not as pulled from the rear end as some of you goons seem to think.

Yeah the Magic Council has been on the case of Fairy Tail ever since the first few story arcs, trying to find ways to disband or break them up.

I thought it was pretty well done. Above and beyond that, yeah, we already knew that the Council was moving against Fairy Tail, we also knew that Mest was bad news somehow thanks to his who-are-you-again nature: never once did he appear anywhere in crowd scenes before this arc, so the reveal of his powers and the fact that he was not a FT member wasn't a surprise. This was a good way to indicate an even more complicated plot in this potential three-way battle.

So if the Council continues to be part of this arc, I think it was very good. If it turns out that Mest and his Explodium-based battleship just showed up to make us understand that Grimoire Heart are bad news and very powerful... eh, that's not good writing. Hard to know which way it'll go right now. I'll still read and enjoy it, either way, because I love this manga's energy and breakneck pace.

Mest was never going to be an outright bad guy though because when Wendy teamed up with him she said something like "I don't sense any evil in him" and if a protagonist says that it automatically means they can't be bad. Protagonists hunches are never wrong.
