ColonelCurmudgeon posted:And it's hard for the indies to protest, too. "Start supporting independent shops again! This charitable organization is stealing our business!" They do complain about it, you just don't hear it because happens at the planning stage. We have an oxfam bookshop in our small town and the council had to be convinced that they wouldn't put the indie bookshop down the road out of business. I prefer the oxfam shop by a long way though, as the indie shop seems to go out of its way to stock nothing of interest whatsoever.

There's this group http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/28438.The_Book_Barn_2010_Roundup but it doesn't get much traffic. I'm using goodreads for the same purpose as Hedrigall. Not doing too well so far though.

I would advise reading Atwood or Chabon or PD James type take on the genre, unless you're determined to go for some space opera type schtick. It's far more rewarding then revisiting Snow Crash, which was horribly flawed when it first came out, never mind now.

How about the The man who loved children by Christina Stead? It's just been reprinted after a review by Franzen, so I'm interested in seeing what the fuss is about. e: or not, since the poll is already up. knees of putty fucked around with this message at 12:59 on Jul 16, 2010 |

Is the how to be pretentious thread a test of some kind? It seems to be drawing out some of the funniest stuff I've seen in a while. Plus, I hope someone ends up quoting Dylar's synopsis of Great Expectations.

Ouch, that's a lovely summer you've got planned for yourself. Read Kesey and then do anything you can to avoid the rest of the crap.

7 y.o. bitch posted:words That's pretty interesting. I struggle mightily with finding a decent reading/discussion group. I have no background in literature, just a healthy interest, so I have no ready-made group of friends who like to discuss this stuff. I couldn't find anything locally, so I've made do with internet forums, but it's not the same as actually talking to people. I'd kill to find a group of like-minded people in my city.

These ideas all sound good. I like the idea of short stories or autobiographies. The more challenging and interesting the better.

Encryptic posted:Yep, and it's one of the reasons that TBB continues to not achieve some perceived "higher standard", because nobody wants to put in any actual effort to do something besides bitch about it. The complainers should just find another community that might be more inline with their particular tastes or STFU. Well most of the criticism of TBB I've seen focusses on the predominance of SF/Fantasy, and it's hard to argue against when you have this type of thread http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3345499 which consists of recommending all the named threads in the forum.

Is there an ethical online UK based alternative to Amazon that can be recommended? I'm not sure local bookstores exist anymore, certainly not round here anyway.

It's true, looks like the Shire - even comes with twee Gaelic pipe music and bagpipes for greater authenticity! In the end I used the Hive. Looked a good alternative to Amazon. In terms of local independent stores, only one and the rest are specialist bookstores.
