Not like a villain redemption, but rather they were a "good guy" from the beginning but due to a conspiracy or circumstances had to act evil to goad the protagonist into saving the world. MGS 3 is really the best example I can think of at the moment, or even MGS 4 with Ocelot.

Then ignore the Zeta rec. With the other two though, the characters that undergo that aren't exactly the main characters or villains though, so it might not be what you want exactly? Just go watch Giant Robo Unmistakeable Fire fucked around with this message at May 5, 2010 around 10:13 |

We're talking about good guys and bad guys, which is a fuzzy but not completely undefinable fictional construct. Anyways, I think the character should scratch the "supposed bad guy ends up supporting the hero in some way" itch. That's my recommendation.

I'm on page 8 of this thread at the moment but figured I would make a request anyway- Does anyone know of any really great translated horror manga? I've read every single translated work by Junji Ito I can find and would like something in the similar vein. I absolutely adored The Drifting Classroom as well. And piggybacking onto that- really great horror anime series or one-shots? I really love

It's been a long since I've read anything by Ito so this is kind of a shot in the dark but the original Devilman manga? Not in the same vein but Berserk, Hellsing, Wolf Guy and Zetman if you're not reading them already. As for anime Mushishi is pretty horrorish at times. The Kara no Kyoukai movie series not only has some of the best anime movies in it but it's horror too. Ghost Talker's Daydream was a decent OVA it's about a dominatrix that exorcises sprites as a side job. Call Me Tonight was a wonderful one shot horror comedy about a call girl who is asked to help find a way to stop a guy from turning into a monster when he's aroused. Neither Call Me Tonight or Ghost Talker's Daydream are porn which is weird considering most horror in anime is porn. Guyver fucked around with this message at May 6, 2010 around 07:40 |

Hey, so after re-watching Spirited Away I started remembering about a lot of other Anime movies I had seen and enjoyed. Princess Mononoke, The girl who leaped through time and 5 Centimeters Per Second really grabbed my interest. I was wondering if any goons out there had other recommended viewing. Got anything I should see?

Got anything I should see? Summer Wars, which has the same studio and director as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Not quite as serious as TGWLTT, but it has the same charm in the characters. An absolute blast of a movie. The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices of a Distant Star were both directed by Makoto Shinkai, the guy behind 5cm per second. Voices is a particularly interesting one because of the context behind how it was made: it was written, directed, and produced entirely by Shinkai himself on his Mac computer. There are really only two characters with speaking parts in the movie, and they were originally voiced by Shinkai himself and his girlfriend. Personally of all his works, I like TPPiOED the most. Also seconding Kara no Kyoukai because that set of movies were amazing and may be my favorite "series" to come out of the 2000's.

Which reminds me, if you really want to drown in ennui, symbolism, and shameless pseduo-intellectualism you could always give some Mamoru Oshii flicks a shot. He did the original GitS movie and his recent The Sky Crawlers was actually pretty good in it's own way imo.

Was poking around Hulu for something to watch when I don't feel like finishing Eureka Seven and saw a few interesting looking shows. Was wondering if any of you guys had seen or had any opinions on these. If they suck I'd just rather spend my time watching Gurren Lagann or Sengoku Basara or any of the other definitive good shows. Birdy The Mighty: Decode seemed kinda cool. Has some ...interesting attire choices for Ms. Birdy Dance the Vampire Bund's first episode pretty much sold me in just the way it was presented but I'm still not 100% sure on how it is going to turn out later on. Casshern Sins the concept sounds decent enough but I haven't started it.
