Char if you don't watch CCA. Some characters in Giant Robo get this. I can think of a villain in Naruto that gets that sort of character development

More specifically. Do you mean characters that seem villainous but are revealed to be heroic or villains that develop to be heroic?

Not like a villain redemption, but rather they were a "good guy" from the beginning but due to a conspiracy or circumstances had to act evil to goad the protagonist into saving the world. MGS 3 is really the best example I can think of at the moment, or even MGS 4 with Ocelot.

Then ignore the Zeta rec. With the other two though, the characters that undergo that aren't exactly the main characters or villains though, so it might not be what you want exactly?

Just go watch Giant Robo

Battle Angel Alita fits your requirements perfectly, if you're okay with manga.

Also just to throw a completely out-of-forum-context suggestion, have you watched Farscape?

That's not that true at all, assuming you're referring to Desty. It's more that he's so morally gray that he's just switched allegiances; he wasn't a good guy all along, he was just himself all along.

By absurd shonen standards, and assuming I'm remembering correctly and none of his experiments in the original series were on unwilling subjects I'm willing to at least call him "not actually a villain."

E: He also has the "threaten the protagonist to bring out as much of her potential as possible" clause down to a science.

Sure, okay, but we're not talking about good and evil. We're talking about good guys and bad guys, which is a fuzzy but not completely undefinable fictional construct.

Anyways, I think the character should scratch the "supposed bad guy ends up supporting the hero in some way" itch. That's my recommendation.

I'm on page 8 of this thread at the moment but figured I would make a request anyway-

Does anyone know of any really great translated horror manga? I've read every single translated work by Junji Ito I can find and would like something in the similar vein. I absolutely adored The Drifting Classroom as well.

And piggybacking onto that- really great horror anime series or one-shots? I really love anime but I haven't seen a ton of really great horror series out there. Any suggestions?

It's been a long since I've read anything by Ito so this is kind of a shot in the dark but the original Devilman manga? Not in the same vein but Berserk, Hellsing, Wolf Guy and Zetman if you're not reading them already.

As for anime Mushishi is pretty horrorish at times. The Kara no Kyoukai movie series not only has some of the best anime movies in it but it's horror too. Ghost Talker's Daydream was a decent OVA it's about a dominatrix that exorcises sprites as a side job. Call Me Tonight was a wonderful one shot horror comedy about a call girl who is asked to help find a way to stop a guy from turning into a monster when he's aroused. Neither Call Me Tonight or Ghost Talker's Daydream are porn which is weird considering most horror in anime is porn.

Fuan no Tane. I forget where I found it, and its licensing status but it is very very good. The fantastic and terrifying thing about these Japanese stories is that they revolve largely around these malevolent urban environments and this lovely universe that has no fairness or logic to its cruelty.

+1 to that! I am yet another victim of School Days thanks to this forum. Yet another mind hosed. I did spoil myself quite a bit because I knew poo poo was gonna get real, the part around episode 10 where Kotonoha starts to get that dead-eyed look? That poo poo me up, and I had to find out more about what was gonna happen. it was still amazingly when I saw it. I just.... there are no words.

It would be better to be unspoiled when watching the series, but even though I kinda knew what to expect, it still hosed with my head, because it started off so unassuming, then you got little hints of WTF as it went on. The atmosphere is pretty freaky if you marathon it. There are so many "oh poo poo" moments, even when you don't factor in episode 12.

Also, Poor Sekai? She introduced Makoto and Kotonoha in the first place, then was all like "oh lol actually I like you, i'll let you practice sex on me". I really don't have any sympathy for her.

Has anyone seen the game's alternate endings? You should look them up if you've seen the whole thing, pretty much all of them are on Youtube. SOme of the other "bad endings" are ridiculous to the point of being amusing.

Can I just say School Days is by far the best anime I've ever seen and everyone who likes anime should watch it. this is not sarcasm btw. Eventually I'll write a long rear end post about what makes it so great, but basically the whole thing just destroys otaku culture and most anime as misogynistic, empty, and actively destroying Japanese society. School Days is sort of like the anime equivelant of Funny Games, where it repeatedly breaks the 4th wall through fanservice and anime bullshit only to bring you down and make you feel like poo poo for watching it. For now let me stop with this image, which I feel summarizes the show perfectly.

You might as well check out the other movies by those directors:

Summer Wars, which has the same studio and director as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Not quite as serious as TGWLTT, but it has the same charm in the characters. An absolute blast of a movie.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices of a Distant Star were both directed by Makoto Shinkai, the guy behind 5cm per second. Voices is a particularly interesting one because of the context behind how it was made: it was written, directed, and produced entirely by Shinkai himself on his Mac computer. There are really only two characters with speaking parts in the movie, and they were originally voiced by Shinkai himself and his girlfriend. Personally of all his works, I like TPPiOED the most.

Also seconding Kara no Kyoukai because that set of movies were amazing and may be my favorite "series" to come out of the 2000's.

I'll echo the recommendations for Mamoru Hosoda films, Makoto Shinkai films (5cm/sec: the prettiest movie about the ordinary you will ever see), and Kara no Kyoukai.
But I'll add Satoshi Kon films (particularly Perfect Blue), and Denpa Teki na Kanojo (although it's an OVA).

Actually, he did preform experiments on a lot unwilling people. When Ido first visited him to get back the berserker body, he was disgusted by what Nova was doing to people. Then there is the room in Granite Inn with all the prisoner's of Barjack who were used as test subjects for his research, with Kaos mentioning that over ten times as many have had the same thing done to them since Nova left Tiphares.

I'd definitely say that Nova was a villain in the original, though he would never consider himself one.

Paprika is another solid Satoshi Kon flick. It's also much more colorful and fun than is usual for him. As for Tactics, shounen ai is pretty much all garbage due to strict adherence to lovely genre conventions.
