I don't know how to review this film without giving much away. I haven't read the comic but from what I heard from people who have after the screening said they had mixed feelings with the story but the violence was spot on. Nicolas Cage does a good job at being Nicolas Cage but when he plays characters that don't have to be taken seriously, he's awesome! The movie does a good job at mixing in realistic situations with impossible "shoot-em up" style "holy shits!". Things happen in the movie that also are result in "oh my god that was loving badass!" moments. I was on the edge of my seat during the entire blackout night vision hit girl FPS I'm going to kill 50 bad guys in the dark scene. I can't wait for this to come out so I can pay to go see this again. The red band trailers and clips set my expectations and the movie delivered more! 5/5

Kick-rear end was an absolute blast from beginning to end. Had a perfect mix of comedy, action and even genuine drama and emotion, while commenting on the superhero genre without descending into mindless parody. There were punch-the-air awesome moments scattered throughout. Also the soundtrack was fantastic, both the score and the choice of songs. 5/5

This movie was the most entertaining movie that I've seen in a long time. Hilarious but poignant and with plenty of awesome moments. The strobe scene was perhaps my favourite movie scene ever. 5/5

The movie had all the needed pieces to make a very fun movie yet dark/realistic at the same time.. Instead they put in too many awkward, unnecessary scenes leaving the really cool scenes few and far between. You can't really go into a full review of this movie without giving too much away.... so I will simply suggest you go into the movie to see 30% of the movie you wanted to see and try to ignore the 70% you didn't. 2/5

This was a fun film to watch, but too cliched and too many moments where I'm thinking "I've seen this before a thousand times". It's a comic book movie, but it plays itself off as more reality based (at least at the onset). The problem is that the plot goes from barely plausible to barely believable in the 2nd half of the movie. Good performances all around, but I didn't care for "McLovin" being cast in this. Summation: good movie, worth the price of admission. 3.5/5

The plot does get a little outlandish toward the end, but that didn't stop me from loving every moment of it. Going from humble beginnings to the ultimate badass is what every superhero movie is about, and they managed to pull it off in a way that was vaguely realistic. It's a perfect mix of goofy teen comedy and graphically violent actioner. So badass. Hit Girl is the best action character in a long, long time. Every scene with her was absolute genius. 5/5

I can't believe how well they marketed this movie. There's absolutely no way I can talk about it without massive spoilers, but the previews give away very little about what really happens, and in a good way. There were a lot of times where I thought "drat, I didn't see that coming" despite it being somewhat cliche in some parts (but really, we're in year 2010- it's hard to NOT be cliche anymore). Very well done, this movie definitely lives up to its title. 5/5

Kick-rear end's preview lead me to believe that this was going to be a movie about a teen-aged boy who one day decides to dawn a costume and fight crime. Then others are inspired to follow his lead becoming costumed heroes them selves. The preview also lead me to believe that it was going to be a comedy in the vain of Mystery Men. Maybe like the American Pie version of Watchmen or something like that. Instead the movie is more just about a teenager becoming a mask hero and getting in over his head, and the movie is much more drama/action than it is comedy. I am not saying its a bad movie, its just not at all what I expected and kind of was a let down. I was expecting a movie with a lot of super hero wantabes, but totally the movie only had 4 masked character. 5 if you count the Bird-Man who jumps to his death in the opening scene Speaking of which, the opening scene of the movie really set a comical tone that the movie doesn't really follow. I think all in all, this movie has just made me want to watch Mystery Men again for a funny Super Hero movie, and Watchmen for a serious one. Because I don't really feel like this movie accomplished either as well as it could have. 3/5

This movie is loving awesome in every possible way. There is nothing I didn't like about it, at all. If you even remotely enjoyed shoot-em-up, please watch this movie. People wielding polearms are loving AWESOME. 5/5

I'm actually kinda laughing about the movie since Atomic Comics is a real place (or rather a chain of stores) in Phoenix. I know the owner, but haven't talked to him in years. How they got so much product placement in this movie is beyond me, but I can say this for sure - Atomic Comics looks NOTHING like it does in the movie, and it does NOT have a built in coffee bar (although I wonder if they'll be building one now that the movie is doing well). Now that that's over, I have to say that the movie was so-so. I agree that there are indeed some really great bits in it (the whole "I know I'd definitely gently caress his brains out if I had the chance" exchange was priceless), and every bit with Hit Girl is awesome. But all this is overshadowed by the titanically large amount of unimpressive filler. Edit: Gotta love the placement of the theme from "Sunshine" too. Good song and all but I've always thought it was cheating to steal another film's score (although I shouldn't have considering the Cocoon (or was it Cocoon 2?) soundtrack. Overall 3/5. When I first saw the trailer my expectations went sky high - all because of one quote: "I'm Kick-rear end". I just had to see it, the quote gets me everytime. The movie Kick-rear end is extremely self-aware, and although it involves a badass 11-year old girl, the film does not end up as a cheeseball. Every fight scene is a delight to watch - they are entertaining, violent and over the top. I enjoyed them even better than those in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill. Also, there is a beautiful reference to Kill Bill in it! As an action movie, this movie is up there with The Dark Night, although smaller in it's scope. As a comedy, it's a joyful and thrilling ride with a lot of amazing moments. As a superhero movie, it's the opposite of Watchmen - no deep bullshit. The philosophy breaks down to a simple question: "Why has noone ever tried to be a superhero?". Kick rear end is the new classic. It may be the best action movie to come out yet this year. 5/5 clearly not a horse fucked around with this message at 23:26 on Apr 25, 2010 |

I loving loved this movie. Christopher Mintz-Plasse was the most annoying part, I don't think he's the best actor but I guess he's on par with everyone else in the film. He just kinda annoys me. Anyways, worth seeing. Great movie if you're a nerd and/or you like comics and superhero type poo poo. 4/5

This movie was great. I had previously read the comic before knowing about the movie and was very impressed with how well it was put into a film. I enjoyed Nicholas Cage for once and thought that Hit-Girl was VERY well done, Christopher Mintz-Plasse did a great job himself and the director did a good job by not giving him more spotlight than needed. I am overall very satisfied with the production of the movie and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to take a break from the typical super-hero movies that have recently plagued the cinemas. Stayed very close to the comic and well executed. 5/5

There is so much to like about this film. Every scene with Chloë Grace Moretz in it is fantastic. Nic Cage also does a great job as well. Didn't buy into Christopher Mintz-Plasse's character at all or the "romance", but that doesn't change how loving awesome this film is. 4/5

It was NOTHING like the source material. Which in a way, pissed me off. Alot of missed opportunities with the story. 1/5

This movie is so loving good it's ridiculous. The score was amazing and it ended up being nothing like the trailer made it out to be, but all the same the trailer pulled me in regardless. It was a bait and switch, but in a totally bad rear end way. It's like I only had money for a $50 fat crack head hooker, and was gonna do it, but I end up with $2500 a half hour hooker victoria's secret model look alike by mistake and she was prepaid for the entire night. 5/5 Alizee fucked around with this message at 08:13 on May 14, 2010 |

I agree with someone above that was upset with the changes from the source material. The superhero side I was more or less ok with the changes except the Jet Pack? . But the relationship with the girl in his personal life was way too Hollywood happy when in the book it was a train wreck that kept getting worse and worse. Basically they took a good comic and then took all the Mark Millar out of it. Still very decent for a comic book film and infinitely more true to form than "Wanted" was. 4/5

This movie was hilarious and I enjoyed every minute of it. The juxtaposition between an incredibly light hearted atmosphere and comic narrative with the brutal violence and sinister characters create a very unique dark comedy. The movie never takes itself too seriously, and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. Solid performances, good pacing, and a refreshingly new premise make for a ludicrous yet entertaining film that somehow manages not to get too stupid. Who honestly gives a poo poo if the film deviates from the source material? Understand that a movie is an adaptation, as print and film are totally different mediums. I'm so tired of hearing that pointless comment, just shut up already. It comes across as being so damned pretentious. 4/5

I thought that at nearly 2 hours this might drag on a bit, but it was a riot from start to finish. Having not read the comic, I can't comment on any differences (although I certainly agree it's pointless trying to compare them anyway). Hit-girl is an excellent character, and a surprisingly good actor for a 13-year old. The violence is very well done, and while there were a few "300"-style moments (no bad thing) they avoided The Matrix bullet-time cliches. The comedy is also great, even down to simple stuff like Kick-rear end' funky dancing in Red Mist's car. Brilliant and entertaining. 5/5

Kick-rear end is a movie that thinks a lot more of itself than it really deserves. It's an inept movie that tries to deconstruct (I hate using that word but I can't think of a better one) the idea of a superhero by having some random loser try to be a masked crime-fighter and get the poo poo kicked out of him for it. Of course, the movies spends the rest of its time focusing on how awesome Hit Girl and Big Daddy are and holy gently caress that 11 year old girl just killed that dude holy poo poo this is so awesome. It doesn't have the obvious admiration for the works it parodies like, say, Hot Fuzz, and substitutes that for smug cynicism and unwarranted self-importance. The actions are really good (the one which takes place in a pitch-black warehouse in particular stands out) but when the credits rolled I just felt empty, like I had watched a smart concept for a film derail. Disappointing. 2/5
