drzrma posted:I thought half the point of the DC-3 was to lose the third engine and its associated noise, vibration, and fire hazard compared to Ford Trimotor and the like? Not to say I wouldn't love a turboprop converted DC-3, though a turboprop PBY luxury yacht is much higher on the list despite the utter impossibility of it. There are plenty of twin-turboprop DC-3 conversions out there, the Basler BT-67 seems to be among the more recent (they were still doing them in like the late-2000s I believe.)

So a guy who works for the amazingly named 'Unicorn Aerospace' - responsible for the XIALJet Mk-1 which "is a hybrid manned fighter interceptor and unmanned precision targeting elimination platform for zero collateral damage effectiveness.".. - thinks he know where MH370 is. He's basing this on some apparently amazing Russian spy satellite tech which found something. MH370 is at a “Site of scientific discovery of identical size proportion and primary material substances of aluminum, titanium, copper, engine alloys, hydrocarbons and steel alloys as that of MH 370 located in a depth of 1100 meters as first appearing on remote satellite imaging technology 52 hours after 14:30 March 8th.” That's quite some sat tech. Huff post has the article. Good 'ol media giving the voice to the real experts. Mind you, it's only marginally less insane searching where they are, so

I love how the article goes on further to claim that MH370 was shot down by the United States because hackers had taken over the plane and were going to crash it into Diego Garcia, something that very likely would have gone unnoticed by everyone there for several hours' time. "Hey, I see smoke, did another B-1 land gear up and no one noticed?"

What would you even crash it into? The marina?

A quick google search tells me one last squadron flies them and they're switching to Growlers this year.

Add together supposed Black Site detention areas, the rumor of forward-deployed nuclear weapons, the security of an airbase where even the most secret of aircraft can land for refueling/maintenance, and the sum equals a trifecta of crazy. When in truth, getting based at Diego Garcia generally means one of two things: 1) your detailer hates you or had no other choice (meaning you're single or recently divorced), or 2) you hosed up and it's your punishment. The British own that island and if you break any laws you'll find yourself in Her Majesty's Brig fairly quickly. Plus, the highest-ranking person on the island is always British. edit: and our lease on that island expires in 2016 so it's not much of a long-term storage solution for MH370

I've heard someone contend that the F-16 will go down in history as a disappointment. Conceived as a simple light-weight dogfighter it's instead been relegated to a life as a cheap bomb truck which seems to entirely go against its intended design. Is it actually any good in that role?

There was beautiful Hawker Hunter practicing for airshows in our skies earlier this week. e: and it's doing it today, THAT BLUE NOTE Locals went "OH GOD THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING" and media had to go out and explain that no no, it's just a jet fighter introduced 60ish years ago practicing. The good old J29F Tunnan they have out there flew Monday, wish I hadn't missed out. Ghosts n Gopniks fucked around with this message at 18:15 on May 29, 2015 |
