I'm kind of wary about them adding stat tracking and a ranking system, but on the other hand I really like Tripwire and I'm glad they're trying something new. Have they hinted a release date yet?

Have they hinted a release date yet? Something new would be something not set in the WWII eastern front. Can we get an RO-style game in a new setting, please? Maybe next game? Having said that, and after reading the article, I really, really like what they're saying. RO:OST and KF and shown me that Tripwire actually understands what makes multiplayer games fun to play. I like that they're thinking about realistic details such as peripheral vision, and I REALLY like that they're able and willing to take as much time as they need to make the best game they can. Yeah, I'm a slobbering Tripwire fanboy, but they haven't steered me wrong yet.

Some of the things didn't sound like stuff I would want in my RO :oldman: but I really trust Tripwire to make a solid, fun, intense multiplayer game. The hero ranking poo poo especially put me off. Maybe if they do it in a way where there are limits on these 'bad rear end' dudes instead of everyone just ranking up like in CoD:MW2 it would be pretty inspiring for your team to know you have some loving super gamer on your side. I'm sure it could work the other way around as well. Now that ROOST is old and the community is smaller, I've definitely looked at the scoreboard and seen a few names that make me think, "gently caress *name* is there sniper/tank". The linked battles idea sounds pretty bad rear end, and I'm hoping the voice chat is improved in a squad type BF2 system. Have they said anything about the player size they are shooting for? I'd be a little disappointed if it was less than the current 50. I'm just really glad Tripwire won that UT2004 contest to get their ball rolling. Even if Air Buccaneers was the best mod of all time.

I'm hoping for this to be good. I like the first person cover system and how they have freeaim with irons. And better setting of bipods on terrain geometry. Hopefully the hero system won't be stupid.

I'm thinking "Hero" will probably be a class of sorts limited to the first pick AND dudes with the highest ranking on the server or something. That seems like a pretty sensible way to implement it.

I'd love it if they would just make the hero stuff something like: your guy gets an ear necklace or skulls/killscores on his helmet, or when in tanks, you get more bushes or cool poo poo on it. Better yet, make the "super-dude's" bullet ricochets and whizzes just slightly different than others so you know xX-Va$i1i Z4ie7ev-Xx is shooting at you. Asthetic things would be cool, everyone likes trench-coats. Another cool aspect, perhaps your taunts and commands are voiced by Jürgen Prochnow, Putin himself or someone cool if you are the top bastard on the team, and by some pants-pissing schoolboy when you are a simple private.

Air Buccaneers started with Friendly Fire defaulted to ON and essentially ensured they were dead on arrival. It was a great and original game but it needed to thrive long enough for people to understand the cooperative nature of the gameplay. But they murdered it with one boneheaded default option. I'm pretty excited for this namely because of the interface changes they've been working on. Direct environment interaction with weapons is really the great barrier to be crossed. Since Infiltration had their first foray into weapons being more than intangible sprites I've been dying to see a game well and truly make it work. I mean, one of the big reasons there's so much variation in weaponry is because of how and where you'd use it. People go room clearing carrying around sniper rifles and big old BARs because why not. It's not like you'd need a carbine or a pistol in tight corridors and spaces. Really excited about this.

Maybe if you are top on the server, your name is on the plaques of statues on the maps. Maybe the name an objective after you next time the map is played.

those gamemodes look like worthwhile twists on tired fps staples. i can't think of any games with the countdown mode, not offhand. It sounds like it'll be a blast, as long as the system specs aren't too high.

I really hole they steal their cover system wholesale from Call of Juarez 2. It was seriously clever there - no buttons involved. If you just aimed up while behind appropriate cover, you'd automatically crouch down. Lower your gun, and you'll slowly peek further and further up over the edge. It was a proper, clever, analogue cover system that worked on anything tall enough to crouch behind, and even corners.

Yeah, there's no other game out there that really focuses on the realistic tanks where to be really effective, you need a full crew in each tank. Which is why tank maps sucked, because everyone ran off by themselves with their own tanks.

I'm not sure if tanks will be in the game at all, they havn't said anything about it. U3 is a monster of an engine so I don't know if they can get the player count high enough to make vehicles a possibility.

Well if they have tanks they'd better have deformable terrain in too. Nothing more annoying than driving a heavy tank that gets stopped by the tiniest tree or bush like it's a brick wall.

Yes. Been waiting for more news on this. Like some others I'm not too sure about the stat-tracking, leaderboards and hero development. I've played enough Battlefield to see that these features seem to draw hackers like nothing else.

UE3 can support up to 64 players without breaking a sweat so I doubt that'd be a limiting factor. Also RO without tanks would just be odd. Sure some maps were more suitable to not having vehicles but larger maps would just be odd without vehicles.

I hated levels with lots of tanks like Arad. The first reason was because I sucked at using tanks and the second was that tank focused maps were boring in gameplay and visuals (as in flat and open). I do like the levels where there are a few tanks just as a support role. Infantry can take them out a lot easier but tanks can be nasty with the right amount of infantry support. Maps like these were about medium sized a felt pretty good.

I just heard about this game now. I played RO forever, still play it on occasion. The problem I had with the original was the AI. I usually just played offline, but the AI was so completely retarded. I hope the single player for this new game has better AI than the original.

^^I think they are making an actual single player campaign with story ect. Nothing more annoying than driving a heavy tank that gets stopped by the tiniest tree or bush like it's a brick wall. I'm not sure that is a possibility in UE3, but the Darkest Hour mod for ROOST made a pretty good compromise. For wooden fences/some trees you could simply drive through them in a tank as if they were not there. For infantry they still would block progress. It was a little goofy but a nice improvement. I also really loved the way they made panzershrecks work, you only get 1 rocket and you load really slow by yourself. But if you have a buddy come and 'reload' you in the way you give ammo to an MG it puts the rocket in quick. It's really fun to have your little 2 man AT team sneaking around. I never got U3, are there servers that run with 64 players? I liked only a few of the big maps especially Berezina. It had a bunch of early war tanks so not everyone is sitting back sniping away, and plenty of halftracks. For the germans to win their plentiful armor actually has to charge forward because they can't shoot it out from long range with the russian armor. It is a big map but it has a good sense of progression as you battle your way across it. Many of the big tank maps are poo poo because all the points remain re capable which makes the map a huge merry-go-round. It is also the only map where I've seen pub server co-operation across multiple tanks and infantry. Captain Beans fucked around with this message at Mar 19, 2010 around 22:09 |

Berezina was an utterly glorious map. Easily my favourite of the community maps that got added into the game - such amazing long fields of fire for riflemen, nice combined arms stuff, the AT guns, trench clearing, all good. Couldn't stand any of the tank-only maps though.
