North American release date is March 23rd. March 26th for Europe.

Demo is out now for 360, PS3 and PC via Steam. PC version will require DirectX 10 (Windows Vista or 7 only, no XP)

What is Just Cause 2?
Just Cause 2 is an open-world sandbox-type action game and a sequel to the original Just Cause, released in 2006.

The original Just Cause was released for the Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2 and PC. It was appreciated by some but bashed by many for having technical issues and "open-world jank". Since then they've been hard at work making Just Cause 2 and it looks really awesome.

Shamelessly stolen official features list:
Unique vertical gameplay -- Take to the air like no other game. Experience total aerial freedom with the unique parachute and dual grapple.
Unbelievable adrenaline-fuelled stunts -- Freefall, BASE jump, vehicle surf, parasail, skydive, grapple, slingshot, leap between vehicles, hang from helicopters, scale buildings. The impossible is within your grasp.
Upgraded dual grapple -- Your best tool is now a weapon. Fire two shots with the grapple hook and attach unwilling enemies to high-speed vehicles, hang them upside down from buildings, or tether objects in mid-air. The possibilities are as vast as your imagination.
The secrets of Panau -- Explore the island paradise from sprawling cities, secluded beaches, and towering mountain peaks. There's more than 400 square miles of your own personal playground.
Experience true freedom -- Hundreds of objectives can be completed in any way or order that you choose. When it's time for a break from Agency business, kick back and enjoy all the attractions that Panau has to offer.
Massive selection of vehicles -- Catch air on a high-speed dirt bike, race across the sea in a power boat, or fire a spread of rockets from an attack chopper. More than 100 land, sea, and air vehicles are yours for the taking.

Specific Videos:
Freedom trailer
E3 2009 demonstration
11 more minutes of narrated gameplay
Another 10 minutes of narrated gameplay (sorry, can't find it anywhere besides IGN)

The PS3 version will also be able to capture and upload video to Youtube. You can either start a recording at any time, or pause the game and upload the last 30 seconds, if something really awesome just happened but you weren't recording. It looks cool, here's a video of that being explained

Gibbed's Goon Challenge Times List

gibbed posted:

So I'm working on a site where you can upload your JC2 save and it'll pull out your challenge times for friendly ~competition~ with other goons. It's still very much a work in progress and I'd like to get more user data to test against.

I guess goon GandH is attached to this, it's a trainer with versions for both the full game and the demo!

Gibbed's awesome mods:
Gibbed is modding the poo poo out of this game and is making it even more incredible.
All of his mods are here: http://mod.gib.me/justcause2/retail/, see mods.txt for file descriptions (mods_spoiler.txt for mods that are spoilers).

A few of my favorites:

SHADES

gibbed posted:

Two quickly made mods to satiate blackmarket hunger.

gibbed_blackmarket_free.zip -- weapons & vehicles free, upgrades are not free.
gibbed_blackmarket_unlocked_and_free.zip -- weapons & vehicles & upgrades free and unlocked by default.

I'll do a one that adds all vehicles eventually.

gibbed posted:

"Mistikman posted: I really want a mod to drop the Black Market cost to 10% of what they currently are. My options currently are for it to be completely free with a cheat or to have it comically expensive in vanilla. I wish I knew how to mod games like gibbed or GandH so I could just make my own."

gibbed_blackmarket_cheaper.zip

Also he made some demo stuff:
Download this and extract it so the folder inside is in your Just Cause 2 Demo install folder, probably C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\just cause 2 demo\
If your game has no grapple or explosion sounds after you start it, die and respawn and they should be fixed.
Among other things, it does the following:

gibbed posted:

http://mod.gib.me/justcause2/gibbed...hackpack_v2.zip

- Demo time limit 'removed'.
- Demo map limit removed.
- Introduction cutscenes removed.
- All vehicles in the demo available through black market for free.
- All weapons in the demo available through black market for free.
- Upgrades for vehicles and weapons are free.
- Spiffy black market images for all of the vehicles since the demo didn't have
them.

Preorder Bonuses
Yep this game is dumb and has store specific preorder bonuses, but at least they're cool and made a trailer to go with them.

Hey! Quit touching my junk!

I would like to post a rebuttal to the last thread, and have us leave it at that.

I never once said that this is a terrible game.

It's not - it's a pretty fun game, but it's difficulty come endgame makes it a lot less fun than the demo. Imagine playing GTA IV where EVERY cop in the game is a SWAT officer by the end, and doing anything to incite chaos results in them piling onto you and killing you in seconds. It is possible, but difficult to get away.

Missions in the game are fairly repetitive, with a few exceptions as gems. They're playable though, and since you can cherry pick missions, you don't have to do them right away.

Yes, I put a lot of time in a short period into the game. 24 hours is a respectable game length, and a perfectly reasonable time in which to be satisfied with how much I've played. Considering "Mercenary Mode" gives you no reward apart from a glowing, taunting % meter, there's not all that much appeal to keep playing. Sure you can on and off, but you're on an island filled with the same town, all that need to be brought to 100% before you die, or all the enemies re-spawn.

Some people cited using a trainer as a solution to bypass the difficulty. It's a shame that's not an option for console players.

Is it worth buying? Yes. Is it worth playing through? More or less. The endgame is underwhelming.

Literally the first game I've bought on release since Crysis or Bioshock, I think. Seriously, if you have a PC that can run it, get the PC version. You're doing yourself a disservice by not playing this with Gibbed's mod and BoloPATCH.

Well! Blew through my cheaply-bought copy of Just Cause 1 just in the nick of time.

Most of the cutscenes were "Your two support characters do nothing but sit around and tell you what to do while having a barbecue" but the last cutscene fighting El Presidente got a few chuckles out of me.

Basically I can safely say that you're probably not missing too much if you didn't play it, though. The grapple/parachute gimmick was inventive, I'll definitely give it that. Parasailing on cars was oddly relaxing.

Steam is saying right now at 11pm that the game will unlock in 15 hours. That means 2pm Central Time tomorrow?? gently caress

Edit for some first page content

I'll add screens when I figure out how, but after about 3 hours this is pretty much one of the best games I've ever played. I don't think everybody will like it, though. I'm a fiend for grand theft auto style games, and this one takes every cool element from that series, and adds a grappling hook and regenerating parachute for you to do some crazy poo poo. The graphics are also pretty great, with a high view distance and good effects. I think it takes a decent system (PC) to turn up the graphics though, as on mine I'm getting around 35 FPS if I can trust the benchmarks they put in.

Edit 2: I was able to skid down one of the guy wires that hold up the radio masts by accident, it was weird

I don't know, this game feels a bit off to me, the controls aren't quite right, the POV is awkward. Maybe that's partially a result of being a console port, but the first game had the same issues on the 360 as I recall. Plus, it's kind of irritating trying to 100% a settlement and searching for the little destroyable/collectible object you're missing. I don't know if that matters that much, but I was irritated by that in the demo. Sort of reminds me of Saints Row, with the awesome over the topness combined with a lack of polish, but I think this might be even less polished.

The floaty controls are sometimes due to performance problems. You can also adjust the FOV if it bothers you. Put "/fovfactor=1.5" in the launch options. Tweak the number to your liking.
