Elected by Dogs posted:edit: also, contribution quote, my post from another thread: "There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth or disk space, it's essentially a lie. As soon as you start using any you're kicked off. Also, in addition, all of the major "unlimited" hosts show you prices with default range set to 2year+ prepay (some up to 10 year prepay) - when you pay monthly there's typically a huge setup fee plus it costs nearly double or triple the price you were shown." they're just rare and almost certainly have other problems (massive overselling, weird software, unreliable networks) that may make it not worth it

DNova posted:HostDime has an anti-IRC policy, which is pretty ridiculous. But you allow game servers, which makes so much sense, right? Hell, ServerOrigin takes it one step farther: quote:ServerOrigin.Com does not allow torrent clients or trackers due to copyright issues and resource abuse. Background daemons such as IRC bots, eggdrop, BitchX, XiRCON and any other program that interferes with normal server operation are not allowed on web servers. Web proxies are also not tolerated due to resource abuse. When using an account with shell, you are not allowed to run any servers or services on the ServerOrigin.Com network. Servers are defined as perlbots, proxies, bitchX, psyBnc, root exploits, DDoS scripts, Shoutcast servers, etc. Running any of these will face an immediate suspension, and users will be subject to a fine no less than $50.00 USD, and no more than $100.00 USD.

Fayk posted:As a hobbyist though, I wish they almost snuck a cheaper/budget plan in at the new bottom-end. There are cheaper VPS hosts, but they all just seem like such fly-by-night operations. I was thinking (short of the $5 shady ones) that rackspace cloud stuff sounded decent for the ~$11 range. Maybe my standards are mis-calibrated. The WHT VPS Offers forum is an easy way to find a cheap VPS and be able to easily check if they're fly-by-night; if their account is old they're probably not going to run off with your money. (Though they might still suck, lol Santrex)

Anybody know where to find lists of/info on VPS hosts with servers in Russia? Or other east-Europe countries. I've found Heihachi (reseller of 2x4 reseller of wahome) but I'd rather not go with them since they are A) slightly sketchy, and B) openly involved in cybercrime. (If you Google their address, the second result is their site. The first result is them admitting they allow botnets, and being accused of hosting child porn) Malloc Voidstar fucked around with this message at 13:55 on Dec 10, 2010 |

take boat posted:I'm in the market for a cheap US server to do supplemental file hosting for a site I run. Minimum specs would be: I'm on one of their OpenVZ plans: http://quickweb.co.nz/vps-linux-plans (VZ1, got it at an absurd discount of something like $65/year) Paid monthly, for $15 you get 20GB of space and 2TB of bandwidth on a 1gbps port. Discounts for paying in advance. They're generally high rated and very popular at LowEndBox. (I can't decide if that's a back-handed compliment or not.) I'm only using mine for very minor file hosting (<150GB/mo), though, so do research. Alternatively, just read WebHostingTalk.

Does anybody know a good, simple image-upload script I can drop on my server for my own use? So I don't have to use SFTP then SSH in to move the file. I tried to look for a PHP script to do this a month or so back but literally every script I found either had a current exploit available, or its previous version was vulnerable and its current version was a year+ old, or it was an unnamed script that I assumed was exploitable. So I guess I'd prefer Python or Perl or something. I don't care about auth, I'll have lighttpd handle it. nex posted:Resource and bandwidth usage will be low, so network stability is my main concern. lowendbox may also be useful. If an offer is cheap but the resources given are also very limited, they're probably not overselling anywhere near as bad as, say, Santrex. (who suck) Of course, the $20+/mo providers are more likely to provide solid service. I prefer to spend time looking for a cheap-but-reliable provider (by trying multiple), but you might prefer to just go with a known-good provider. For example vps hosting like myhosting.com and vpsland.com are incredibly cheap - even when considering their windows server 2008 options... almost too cheap to be true. $20-30 prices for base packages. That is half what most everyone else charges. How are they getting away with this and what features would I be losing. http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

I'm using WTFdns but just noticed that one of their two nameservers doesn't resolve, so I'd prefer to switch to something before the other one decides to die too.
