What Is Drum & Bass?
_________________________________________________________________________________

Drum & Bass (DNB) is a subgenre of electronic music that came about in the UK in the 1990s as an evolution of another subgenre, jungle. DNB is usually categorized by fast tempos (BPMs of 160-180) and prominent sub-bass (bass at low frequencies that you feel more than hear). Many DNB tracks feature samples.

Here's an informative video about some key elements/history of DNB:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac

The Amen break isn't required to make DNB, but if you've heard music with it before (which you probably have at least sometime in the last 25 years or so, even if you weren't aware of it), you already have a pretty good idea of what DNB sounds like.

Auspex posted:

Generally drum and bass songs have a minute or so long intro building up to a drop where the bassline kicks in. Most tunes feature a breakdown and a second drop. There is a huge amount of energy in these drops and a DJs job is to keep building and releasing tension by controlling the flow of the drops and breakdowns while mixing from one tune to the next.

What Does Drum & Bass Sound Like Today?
_________________________________________________________________________________

The lighter side of DNB is referred to as "liquid" (Liquid Funk) and contains more layers of instrumentation. I suppose that darker DNB could also be liquid, but that's usually not the case.

Hospital Records, who've been around since 1996, is the biggest label on that front. Artists currently signed to Hospital include High Contrast, Danny Byrd, Nu:Tone, London Elektricity, Logistics, S.P.Y, Fred V, Grafix, Metrik and more. Hospital hosts "Hospitality" live events, including some of the biggest drum & bass festivals in the world.

Hospital also has a sub-label, Med School, for more experimental DNB. Artists on Med School include Bop, Etherwood, Keeno, Whiney and more.

Other notable liquid artists include Cyantific, Matrix + Futurebound, Netsky and Calibre.

Examples:

Cyantific - Don't Follow [ft. Diane Charlemange]
(off Cyantific's album "Ghetto Blaster")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xATnABqp3M

Metrik - Chasing Sunrise
(off Metrik's album "Life/Thrills")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBBly4My8p0

Logistics - Take Me To Another World [ft. Stella Attar]
(off Logistics' album "Electric Sun")

Fred V & Grafix - Comb Funk
(off Fred V & Grafix's album "Oxygen")

Matrix & Futurebound - Fire [ft. Max Marshall] [Extended DJ Edit]
(off Matrix & Futurebound's "Fire" single)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aikWr4Vibig

On the darker, dirtier side of DNB are artists like Noisia, Dieselboy, Black Sun Empire, Calyx and Evol Intent. Darker DNB is usually more simplistic and focused on strictly drums and basslines rather than layers of instruments like liquid is (but not exclusively).

Examples:

Calyx & Teebee - Enygma
(off Calyx & Teebee's album "Anatomy")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGwbLY-MazM

Dom & Roland - King of the Hustlers
(off Dom & Roland's album "Last Refuge of a Scoundrel")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7yzvuK3Wcg

Dieselboy + Kaos - Barrier Break
(off Dieselboy's album "The Human Resource", as well as the Need For Speed: Most Wanted soundtrack)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzueWghQiRs

Noisia & The Upbeats - Dead Limit
(off Noisia & The Upbeats' "Dead Limit" EP)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz_OgmkbCXg

Artists that toe the line between liquid and dark DNB include TC, Pendulum, Delta Heavy and Sub Focus.

Examples:

TC - Storm Brew [ft. Stylo G] [Whiney Remix]
(off Hospital Records' "We Are 21" compilation)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMnFFGGjTzg

Pendulum - Blood Sugar
(off Pendulum's album "Hold Your Colour")

Sub Focus - Last Jungle
(off Sub Focus' self-titled album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDp7Znr8iRs

Delta Heavy - Tremors
(off Delta Heavy's album "Paradise Lost")

What Should I Start With If I Want To Get Into Drum & Bass?
_________________________________________________________________________________

Personally, I started with a couple compilations: Dieselboy's HUMAN Resource (darker/dirtier stuff) and Tayla's Soul Survivors, which included some DNB pioneers like LTJ Bukem, Makoto and Future Engineers.

Really, it depends on what side of DNB you think you'll lean more towards. If you've listened to the examples I've posted in here, try to gauge what sounds most appealing to you. I'll recommend a few albums/mixes here:

High Contrast - Tough Guys Don't Dance: This is probably my most listened to DNB album. Every track is a banger in some way and the album has never gotten old for me despite listening to it since 2007 when it was released. To me, this is refined liquid DNB at its best.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvmnYId1ckI

Sub Focus - Sub Focus: As a first album, this is a really killer effort. It isn't strictly drum & bass, as there are some tracks from other genres on it too, but the drum & bass tracks are the real standouts, I think.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziU0rc3-yU4

Pendulum - Hold Your Colour - This is one of the first few DNB albums I ever heard, and it's definitely one of my favorites. I don't think I could think of a better album to recommend someone interested in checking out drum & bass. It's a great showcase of the genre in different forms.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZR2p-DhSX4

Evol Intent - Era Of Diversion - These guys are a supergroup of sorts. It's 3 members, and each has a different background. What they bring to the table across multiple genres is absolutely massive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrxQ_Suypns

Netsky - Netsky - Netsky burst onto the scene in '09 when he signed to Hospital, and his first album (released in 2010) quickly became one of my favorite DNB albums ever. Each time I listen to it, I never skip a track on it. Some are better than others, sure, but they're all great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCC_AvmHpR4

Dieselboy's The Destroyer mixes - 2 mixes (one from 2014 and one from 2017) which showcase Dieselboy at his best, seamlessly mixing together some of the filthiest DNB you'll hear.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xouOnHxYUw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJxKXOTNXjc

Submerged - Ohm Resistance Spring 2019 DJ Mix (HEAVY AS FUUUUUUUUUCK)

S.P.Y's BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mM03G5kJTg

Andy C's Ultra 2014 mix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1yB5QV-mHU

The Hospital Records Podcast is a great way to get turned onto new tunes/artists. It usually comes out weekly, is usually an hour long or more and is usually hosted by Hospital co-owner/London Elektricity himself, Tony Colman. It's also fantastic to work out to!

How is DnB released?

Drum and bass is generally released in one of 3 ways.

Singles. These usually consist of two tracks, you can buy these on vinyl with one track per side and most come out on digital download as well. Sometimes you get vinyl only / digital only releases but this is mainly stuff from smaller record labels.

EPs. These are usually 4 tracks, again coming out on either 2x12" vinyls or digital release. Usually fairly hyped up by the labels.

Albums. These usually consist of around 12 tracks as you might expect from a normal album. Releases for these are a bit different though. Generally albums will get released on CD and digital download with all 12 tracks, but for the vinyl release usually 6 of the tracks will get selected to be pressed to vinyl. These will usually be the big dancefloor tracks of the album and sometimes you get a vinyl exclusive track. Extreme levels of hype from the labels.

Each release has its own "Catalogue number" from its record label which is really useful for tracking stuff down. For example, ram records releases all its singles with the catalogue number "RAMM###" where ### is the specific number of the release. A specific example is RAMM078 which is the Sub focus - Rock it/Follow the Light single. You get the idea. A great website for checking this stuff out is http://www.rolldabeats.com which is an encyclopedia of dance music releases, you can search by catalogue number, artist name, record label name, track name etc to find out whatever you might need to know.

Quite often DJs will hold on to tunes for quite a long time before releasing them so if you hear a song when you're out or on youtube and you cant find it to buy anywhere this is probably why. It's loving annoying for the rest of us small time DJs because by the time you can get your hands on a tune its already been rinsed for several months by the big boys.

Netsky - Memory Lane

I'm hooked on Spor's Overdue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FACB8jh_T24) at the moment. For some reason I've really been into female vocals in my dnb lately.

In short, Hospital is the premier liquid funk (lighter style) dnb label. They also have a few sub-labels such as Med School and M*A*S*H. Other labels you might want to check out would be Breakbeat Science, RAM Records, and Metalheadz just to name a few.

You should look into Shogun Audio. They sometimes ride the line between light and dark, but they have been doing some very big things lately:

Alix Perez - Contradictions (from the 1984 album)

Total Science & SPY - Above the Clouds

Subwave is also featured on Hospital's "Future Sounds of Russia" album from last year

Breakbeat Science is probably finished as a label, but if someone is looking for good CDs and singles from the past, yeah, I would seek out the BBS stuff. Used CD shops might be a good place to score the CDs.

A mention of Soul:R and V Recordings (they are slowly putting out new releases) would be good for the lighter fare.

Maybe a nod to the resurgence of minimal, namely the latest output on Critical Recordings and some of the stuff on Shogun Audio (which I have always viewed as a culmination of several sub-genres), and specifically artists like Rockwell, Sabre, some of Alix Perez's material, Icicle, Code 3 (e.g. Jubei, SP:MC and Danzou), hell, most of the stuff on Exit Recordings lately.

Also, I am a Commercial Suicide fan, great label to check out regularly. Almost at their 50th release, and I think Subtitles Recordings is up to about release 75.

Pendulum - Fasten Your Seatbelts

Sub Focus - Last Jungle
(off Sub Focus' self-titled album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFdyfUgy9Cc

These two I would probably pull, for these reasons:

• Pendulum - "Fasten Your Seatbelts" is a breakbeat tune (kind of tearout breaks, at that), tempo is about 132 BPM and not in the usual range of drum'n'bass (usually around 170 to 175 BPM, although the mid to late 0's stuff was sometimes in the 165 to 169 range, and earlier then that, it was 150 to 160).

• Sub Focus - "Last Jungle" is like a throwback, retro tune, runs around 145 BPM. It has the feel and sound of old jungle, which has seen a little resurgence in the past year. A few other recent examples of this include:

– Skream's "Burning Up" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi-4Fd187bs) on Digital Soundboy

– Cluekid's "The Sound" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btRBJ6M0JVI) on Aquatic Labs

– Goth Trad's remix of Skream & Cluekid's "Sandsnake" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJrLsr5aJys) on Disfigured Dubs

All of those artists are generally associated with dubstep, but they are exploring outside of the stereotypical definition of dubstep, in my opinion. And I am sure there are ton of artists doing this, that I am not even aware of.

Any suggestions for what I should add to the OP? :)

I know one thing I forgot: As far as DNB mixes go, there are a ton of them out there, but here's a few I can recommend:

All the Hospital Records Podcasts. I've only heard a few of these myself, so I'm not really sure which one exactly to recommend first (maybe someone else here can help me out with this), but every one I've heard has been stellar.

Hospital Records' "Sick Music" - A really solid double-album full of mixes featuring Hospital artists, as well as up-and-coming DNB artists. The consensus in the last thread was that this mix is fantastic, and I agree. Definitely check this one out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKBrW5tqqH0

High Contrast's FabricLive25 Mix - High Contrast is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to DNB, mainly because of how well put together everything he comes out with is. The energy never stops flowing with this one. The end is arguably my favorite part, HC's track "Days Go By" (his version of Stevie Nicks' "Edge Of Seventeen"):

we get it, you're too busy fellating Gabe to put yourself into someone else's shoes
Sick Music 2 has been leaked and is also killer. There are some craaaaaazy tracks. If you can track down and locate the bbc radio one essential mixes of pendulum (or you can ask me about them via AIM) they are both hugely hugely stellar.

High Contrast and Netsky are probably my favorite two artists currently producing, and if I recall both netsky and HC have releases slated for '10. If HC does anything close to Tough Guys Don't Dance (I don't care if you even like dnb get this album now) I will be blown away and so happy. Netsky has been pounding out great tracks for a while now, and Hospital's signing of him has gotta be a huge bonus.

You might recall earlier in the thread a 16bit remix of Noisia, which was ruinous. I'm a more liquid-minded guy, but after I linked the remix to a buddy he pointed me toward a 16bit single (dubstep, but dnb and 'step are pretty closely linked so why not). I was pleasantly suprised. I would also love to see that melody remixed into dnb.

Already listed 4 in my OP, but here, have another 6 in addition to those:

TC's Evolution
Tayla's Soul Survivors
Cyantific's Ghetto Blaster
Noisia's Split The Atom
DJ Fresh's Escape From Planet Monday
D.Kay's Individual Soul

Keep in mind that these are just a few DNB albums that I think are cohesive. This is also just one way of listening to drum and bass. There's a large percentage (I think larger than the percentage of albums) of singles/mixes, so just take this as an introduction.

There's too many different subgenres of DnB to compile such a list, plus everyone's tastes are different. Personally, i'd get Hold Your Colour by Pendulum and then branch out from there. As I posted in the old thread, Liquid DnB is pretty big at the moment and there's a LOT of it out there. As for compilations, get Nightlife 2 by Andy C. You won't regret it. His other Nightlife compilations are great as well, but Nightlife 2 has something for everyone.

EDIT - TC's Evolution is indeed, a killer album.

That's another thing I didn't put in the OP, 90s DNB. Here's some to rectify that:

LTJ Bukem - Music: This one was also included in Tayla's Soul Survivors mix that I recommended earlier in the thread.

Roni Size & Reprazent - Trust Me: From their album New Forms, which is widely regarded to be one of the best DNB albums of the 90s.

Goldie - Timeless: From his album Timeless, also one of the best DNB albums of the 90s, and considered by many to be the best DNB album ever. This is just half of the song because YouTube only allows 10 minutes, but you can get a sense of the scale of this track, even though it's only a preview of sorts.

There's also the radio station MSX FM from Grand Theft Auto 3, which contained a pretty good mix of DNB/jungle tracks. This track's from 2001, but it's still got that older DNB style to it:

Thirding the Dieselboy suggestion, also check out the Therapy Sessions mixes, any recorded Renegade Hardware sets you can find, and the Lifted Music podcasts.

edit: forgot about the Barcode Filthcasts and Dylan and Robyn Chaos' Freakshow podcasts which are also worth listening to if you like the really heavy side of drum and bass.

The Mechabyte Podcasts are sometimes a little hard to find, but they give a good flavour of the darker, heavier side of eastern European/Russian DnB, which is where an awful lot of talent seems to flow from. Very much a different sound to what you might hear out in a club with artists like Andy C headlining.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out as soon as I'm not relying on my phone for internet. I do like Dieselboy, but I've only heard one album, I think it was System Upgrade or something like that. I remember really liking the Stakka & Skynet tracks on there.

I stopped listening to Filthcasts and blame my entire year of 2009 bad juju on Current Value and his "satanic military" snare drums.

Also, maybe add a link to Roll Da Beats in the OP? It is a great resource for drum'n'bass discographies, can help you find new stuff to check out too, e.g. you like Stakka & Skynet, so you look them up and see that they also go by Kraken and Profound Noise, as well as other related artists:

I've checked out a few of your radio sets and enjoyed them, but this is definitely above and beyond. It's very technical and has a near-perfect flow. Great stuff man, hope you win it!

Thanks guys :)

I feel like I'm getting back in to form with DJing. I guess the main thing with this little mix (which a few friends are asking I make in to a full mix) versus the radio show sets is that I just wing it on the shows, where as this mix I worked out what I want to play and work out the mixes a bit before recording.

It's always been one of my favorites :)

I love the way it seamlessly blends together jazzy elevator music and DNB. It's so relaxing to listen to, while also getting the blood flowing. On paper, it probably doesn't sound like a great idea, but the way it's executed is just marvelous.

I really want him to make another album, but Individual Soul is great, and if that's the only album he comes out with, I'd be okay with that. It's a few years old and I still haven't worn it out.

That's another thing I didn't put in the OP, 90s DNB. Here's some to rectify that:

LTJ Bukem - Music: This one was also included in Tayla's Soul Survivors mix that I recommended earlier in the thread.

XWR3HppFUxM[/]

Roni Size & Reprazent - Trust Me: From their album New Forms, which is widely regarded to be one of the best DNB albums of the 90s.

CxeStgwA6gk[/]

Goldie - Timeless: From his album Timeless, also one of the best DNB albums of the 90s, and considered by many to be the best DNB album ever. This is just half of the song because YouTube only allows 10 minutes, but you can get a sense of the scale of this track, even though it's only a preview of sorts.

dxbLIgQft_I[/]

There's also the radio station MSX FM from Grand Theft Auto 3, which contained a pretty good mix of DNB/jungle tracks. This track's from 2001, but it's still got that older DNB style to it:

Omni Trio - First Contact

I love all these tracks and artists. My first dnb album was Conversions by Kruder and Dorfmeister from like 1996, which was just a 10 track mix of a bunch of jungle artists that were big around that time (Omni Trio, Aquasky, Roni Size)

That 90s' jazzstep sound is still what I listen to the most when I play jungle, shame it's not as popular anymore. Liquid is pretty drat good too though, and luckily there's tons of it.

And then there's their remix of The Prodigy's Voodoo People, which is actually epic in the literal sense (both the song and the video):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKXKWBcaV3A

Seriously, Pendulum has some loving massive tracks.

I know In Silico gets poo poo on a lot for not being "real drum-and-bass" or whatever (as evidenced in the old thread), but listen to tracks like Midnight Runner and tell me that's not some goddamn awesome DNB.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaDvEWawcCA

Anyway, most DNB fans are more taken with Hold Your Colour. It's got both dark/hard AND light/liquid sounding stuff, so it's accessible to basically everyone who listens to DNB. And it's one of the most essential albums for any DNB fan for this reason. 14 tracks, most of which are extremely memorable, with songs on both sides of the spectrum. What's not to love?

I've never talked to a fan of drum-and-bass that didn't like Hold Your Colour, honestly.
