Fix posted:If it's a difference between citadel paints and the crap apple barrel stuff, it's probably your fault. I don't know that I'd go that far, but I've never used citadel paints as they are cost prohibitive, but I cannot see how you would get better results from something as thick as Apple Barrel as you can with something designed specifically for miniature paints, but it's been said many times that the paint you use has to fit your painting style, and maybe PhotoKirk's painting style does in fact benefit from cheap paints. He's not the first Btech painter I've seen recommend hobby store paints over miniature paints.

PhotoKirk posted:I thin the paints with water. I learned it from David Fanjoy's site. The issue of contention here is that even GW, Vallejo, and P3 paints are thinned before applying, but they have a higher pigment count than Apple Barrel, or other hobby store general use acrylics. I don't doubt that you find them useful for your purposes, but it's hard to say that they are the best for painting minis. I'd ultimately say that anyone new to painting minis should try out a variety of acrylics. I find Vallejo Model color to be the best for me. Others swear by Citadel paints, others would say use P3, and I've even seen others like PhotoKirk recommend Apple Barrel or whatever equivalent hobby story paint. In the end it's really the preference of the one painting.

Played an 9 person Clan 3050 Grand Melee game tonight. I took a Summoner A and singled out Rick with his Timberwolf A for single combat. I followed zellbrigen even though those around me disregarded it. on round seven i jumped next to him in the woods and tore off his arm with a gauss slug while he removed my right torso, and I declared no physicals because it was dishonourable. The next round, after enduring eight rounds of whithering fire I missed the critically wounded timberwolf by rolling 3's on a to-hit 5's... before being cored by an errant ERPPC wielding Adder Prime. Barrels of fun.

Tomorrow nights game will be a competition of custom mechs. Tournament Level rules, not advanced. TW ammo, plus precision. Rules are: * Inner Sphere tech base with TOURNAMENT level rules (no advanced/experimental). When you design a mech, make sure SSW is set to tournament level * No more than 3 of any given weapon, excepting 3025 small laser and machine gun types. * All Total Warfare rules ammo, with the exception of precision ammo. * Must use an XL engine. * Pilot skill as per the grand melee table. Using this skill table. ![]() I need to make a cheese mech. Can anyone suggest an optimised custom mech? I was thinking of this: code:Or: code:

Skip the second one - the last rules revision toned the pulse/TC combo down to just minorly broken instead of completely. I'd skip the hatchet, too. The phrase 'TSM hatchet' in my experince is synonmous with 'concentrate fire'. I suggest a small, fast mech completely decked out with flamers, inferno SRMs and plasma. I'd be willing to bet most of those super-machines others are going to field are gonna be tuned VERY close to the edge with heat management.

I took the TSM hatchet mech with the intention of cleaving some faces, then i found TSM activates at 9 heat, not 10. so my weapon loadout made it quite hard to manage that heat. i also only used the stealth armour once. game was 10 turns. I did however manage to hatchet with TSM active 5 times, once in the CTR. most opponents took pulse/TC combos or were TSM. Heaviest mech was 65t. noone died.

So I played the hell out of Crescent Hawk's Inception on my Amiga 20 years ago, and a lot of D&D 10 years ago. I have just enough friends to where learning a new incredibly complex tabletop game would be fun and exciting as long as there was beer. Is there a starter box I can buy? The OP mentions something happening "soon" but I wonder if its out yet, all the Battletech websites look like they're 15 years old. Also, as far as the lore is concerned, is that something I would have to get the actual game materials to start out with, or could I go to my local Half-Price books and get a shitload of the novels for $1 each and just go nuts?

This is the official Starter Box, currently it looks out of stock, but that website is the official source of them. http://bg.battletech.com/?wpsc-prod...ductory-box-set You might be able to find a game shop that has them (ahahahahaahhaahahhahahahahaha) or someone on ebay or amazon willing to part with it. The other option is to just buy the source books and use tokens (also known as the poor kid btech) for mechs.

There's the 25th Anniversary Intro Box Set but it's literally always out of stock due to some huge production issues, from what I've read. You can also download the quick start rules here, which is a pretty decent, but limited, overview of the game rules. Downloads page. It'd be enough for a few games, in any case. Otherwise you'd have to pick up a copy of Total Warfare, some record sheets (probably 3039), and some maps / unit tokens. With lore, the rule books have lore and events dispersed throughout them, and the starter has a larger guide to the universe. Apparently the books are hit and miss at best, and in general focus on a pretty tight timeline with no shortage of Mary Sue characters.

In terms of the lore, there's a lot of it. The box sets have a pretty basic primer in them, but Catalyst's website has most (if not all) of that little booklet up on their website here. For the mechanics, there's the quick-start guide here, which is free and at least will let you look over the basics without having to shell out or hunt down. This also reminds me to update the OP, I haven't in a while. I'll get to that.

Realised something making up Mechwarrior RPG characters, using the 3rd ed Life paths documents. A clan character born after 3050 has a moderate chance of dying due to Reaving, Genetic Virus or orbital bombardment before they are 25. A character i made had to end their life path at 16 because they were a trueborn drop out dark caste bandit on Tranquil, which was nuked by the Vipers in 3071.

The 25th Anniversary Intro Box Set looks like it's finally coming out. Battletech.com Street date is Jan 25th, MSRP $59.99 Contents include: 24 unpainted, ready-to-play plastic BattleMech minis 2 unpainted, premium-quality plastic BattleMech minis One 12-page full-color quick-start rulebook will have players into the action in minutes 36-page book of pre-generated BattleMech Record Sheets One 80-page full-color rulebook Inner Sphere at a Glance, a 56-page full-color book of universe background and BattleMech technical data One 16-page full-color Painting and Tactics Guide Two heavy-duty cards of compiled tables Two 18″ x 24″ game-board quality maps In my opinion, the 26 minis and two mapsheets makes this worthwhile, even if you have some of the rulebooks. The minis aren't the highest quality, but they're more than adequate and offer a huge selection. You can preorder here, from their official store. I have the old starter box, and I'm probably going to pick this up anyways, just for the mechs and map boards.

Yeah, that's the same 25th anniversary box that's been out for a few months now. They were just having production problems, and now it looks like they're finally getting a new shipment out of the door. We've talked about it quite a bit in this thread. The plastic IS mechs are alright, the plastic Clan mechs are great, and the cardstock maps are fantastic.

So I finally got one mech finished.![]() ![]() It's sure not pretty, but I haven't picked up a paintbrush since elementary school so it's a start. I was attempting a Hell's Horses scheme, since black, grey and red seem harder to mess up. It's gonna be a while before I really know even the basics of painting. I was pretty much just slapping the brush against things, hoping it would work out. There was a pretty nasty mold line I didn't notice until I primed and started painting, so I'll probably strip this and fix it up at some point, and try again. In the mean time I have all these guys to practice on.
