They are only stand-alone in the sense that they aren't part of a trilogy story like the first three books (which really were just a prologue to the larger story he is developing). They are very much books 4 and 5 of the larger story, though, and should be read in that order. I have never understood how people can jump around a series that is being told in order. It never pays off for the reader to do that. EDIT: He honestly should just start having the books labeled as part of an ongoing series.
