This thread and that slow motion video isn't helping me not want one of these things. The first time I saw one I thought they were just ugly AK knockoffs. Now I see they are different and probably higher quality rifles. If they accepted AK mags I would be all over them. I still want one, but the only one I've seen was way too expensive and didn't even have a bayonet lug. I have gained a nice appreciation of Czech guns over the years. I knew that before WWII they basically made copies of German designs, but I was surprise that they continued that tradition even after the communist take over. When I first saw the Vz. 58 mechanism it reminded me more of the K43 than the AK-47. Even more so, it seems that their designs were even better. The Vz. 52 rifle seems better than the SKS, and I've heard the 7.62x45 was a better round too. It's the same way with pistols. They kept their original designs, just adopted the Soviet ammo. I would even say the Vz-82 pistol is better than the Makarov, but that's just me. Still, it's like the Russians did one thing, but the Czechs went ahead and did their own thing, and as long as they used the same Commie ammo everyone was happy.

Never ever use the one that came with the gun, at least on surplus rifles for the reasons mentioned. I've never removed the rods from my WASR or any surplus rifles. They're just accessories or decoration at this point. At one point a hundred years ago the US even issued two cleaning rods for rifles. One was steel and kept with the rifle to use out in the field, while a proper wooden one would be kept back at camp. Plus modern cleaning rods and bore snakes are just much better than those old ones. Those ones are good enough when you're living in a hole in the ground for a couple months, but when we're living in nice modern homes we have no excuse not to give our rifles a proper cleaning.
