What a whiner. Gears was the first shooter I played where getting close to an opponent wasn't an anomaly that lasted a fraction of a second. Imagine that, excitement in a video game. He's wrong as hell, too. Before Annex got execution rules in Gears 2, the hammerburst had the majority of my kills.

I said come in! posted:I agree too, it is balanced. This is the problem with the people that play games these days. No one wants to think critically about a videogame. You have the rare individuals that want a game based on skill and strategy, but for every one of those type of players you have 100 more who just want instant gratification. No 'team work' or 'learning how to play to get better', they are the 'press butan win game' players. You see the same thing in other games like BF3, where developers are having difficulty balancing the game around the competent players and the 'casual' players (which is a misnomer really since you can be a casual player but still a competent player that doesn't need everything handed to you).

How do you not find the HOD or Mortar Strikes useful? If you have 5 Command Centers at the ready for Boss waves and use them all back to back you'll have nearly nothing to deal with.

You have to play the right maps, certain maps tend to suck for the HOD like Thrashball. Also call the HOD as soon as the round starts and you hear the Locust scream (that's when they spawn), because when they spawn they're bunched together and you have better chances of each strike getting more kills. Also we managed to kill a Brumak with a Mortar strike once, no clue how that happened or if it was a fluke.

Hactar posted:Gears of War has literally the worst writing in games. Can't read that article at work, but I honestly can't agree more with the title. Them basically saying "All your questions will be answered" and how satisfied and complete things will feel at the end of Gears 3, only to be told that the most vital portions of the plot, portions that the in-game character's themselves question, is basically left ambiguous on purpose. Why is Myrrah human and undisputed Queen of the underground and its inhabitants? What were the sires and what was the purpose of the lab that held them? How could no one have ever noticed any of the underground activity and the fact there was an entire ecosystem of creatures that could both dig and fly? There can be boatloads of cool speculation, but none of it has a concrete answer because it was written that way. The game is based off of implied epic scale and story. The setting, characters, and themes all give off a really important feeling, but there is absolutely nothing to back any of it up, at least reasonably. I'd say the best thing they did was make a good chunk of memorable characters, unfortunately all they can do is scream catchphrases and mannerisms in a very confusing and aimless setting.

That's how most video games are written these days. I think with games, story always takes a back seat to gameplay. It's just there, presented in cutscenes as a way to give the player a chance to breath in between levels. There are some exceptions to this of course. I personally don't get bothered by bad storylines in video games anymore. There use to be a time where I would get visibly pissed off, and start screaming in a demonic language (like what Mass Effect fans did over ME3 for example) if one tiny little lore question wasn't answered to my satisfaction. Then I realized the game industry doesn't care, and will never deliver the kind of story telling that gamers really want.

I think it's more common in the co-op college guy shooters. All you want is a shiny glowing objective to shoot and tear your way through until you can press/destroy/activate it and do the next one with more poo poo to kill. It doesn't leave much room for immersion and developement like you'd find in Uncharted. Granted, they tried harder and did a bit more with Gears 3, but 2 games in it was already too late and the story wrote itself into a dead end. It's not very common a game makes me feel like I want the main villain to die as much as everyone in the game. The last time I can recall that feeling was with Luca Blight in Suikoden II. Actually, Gears 3 made you feel pretty much like the bad guy at the end, with both sides simply struggling to survive and locusts feeling rightfully threatened by the magical global science purge beam that would kill them as well as their problem.

Personally I simply wanted some answers regarding the overall Gears story. And anytime it appeared we where going to get it, Marcus would just yell NOT NOW WE GOT poo poo TO KILL, all that tells me is that not even Epic knew how to finish it, hell one of the major reveals was done in a forum. Understable though, hard work coming up with effects and colors for your guns, who can write doing busy work like that.

The story is all "there", it just hasn't been explained in any reasonable capacity. A while ago one of the level designers spilled some beans and the time line is something like this - Imulsion miners start developing rustlung, researchers start working on a cure at the New Hope facility, mutagenic effects start becoming more apparent, facility is classified and continues exposure tests, subjects start becoming Sires, things get out of hand and the researchers and Sires are sent up into Mount Kadar (except for the few left in the stasis tanks for later study), Sires eventually become first tamed locusts and little baby Myrrah eventually pops out of one of the researchers.

Last night I finally learned about chainsawing Corpsers and shooting Serapedes in the face to stun them. That would have been really handy months ago. Made it to wave 41 last night on Blood Drive during this crazy weekend of mass Corpsers, Serapedes, Wretches, Reavers, and Bloodmounts. Silverback is an amazing piece of weaponry now that we can have rockets on it.

Most of their events revolve around "shotgun only" variants of current gametypes. Get Gnashty was good practice though if your shotgun game is weak.

So the Xbox Live dashboard is saying that a lot of GoW3 stuff is on sale in the marketplace - am I better off just getting the Season Pass for 2400 points and getting everything, or grabbing the 2 add-ons that are on sale?

It really depends on how much Gears you play, if you only want RAAM's Shadow it's worth picking up on sale, but it's short, you only get to play as RAAM twice and the story is forgettable. If you're not into multiplayer or Horde mode I wouldn't bother with the rest of the map packs. There's some fun achievements if that's your thing too, some grindy and some require 5 players. So basically if you play a lot of Gears it's worth it, otherwise, eh.

I just picked up RAAM's Shadow during the sale. It's disappointing you only get to play as RAAM twice since I just finished the second portion last night before quitting so I'd have something to play today. It's a pretty decent length (about 3-5 hours depending on player skill). If you enjoy Gears and the idea of controlling a boss for a couple of short sections, the rest being the typical firefight scenarios present in the rest of the game (only not playing as Marcus) than go for it. You also get a bunch of new horde/multiplayer skins and an exclusive brown tiger gun camo. As someone who's not going to buy the horde command pack or any of the multiplayer exclusive content I'd say it was worth it.

Figured this is worth the bump. The new Game Informer cover features two Onyx guards escorting a prisoner, so looks like a new Gears of War title is getting ready to be announced. Personally I hope it has more to do with the Pendulum Wars era, but who knows, it could just be a Gears game for Kinect at this point.

Uhhh hmm. Seems kinda early for something like this, don't you think? Gears 3 isn't even a year old yet. To think the beta was only a little over a year ago. I mean if the cover is as black and white as the story, it'll be about when Marcus was arrested during the P-Wars and all that. I have a gross feeling in my gut knowing Rod Fergusson will have reason to get more face time from game press in the coming months/year...

Also you're putting a lot of faith in Epic following their own fiction. The announcement has reminded me that I haven't played Gears 3 in loving ages. This is a teambased shooter, if you're getting dominated by a very predictable strategy, that's your fault, not the games. The article implies that all it takes for one person to control a game, is to use the gnasher. I've never seen this to be true.
