This is a very, very stupid question:
For Gears 2, which button triggers the unique, weapon specific executions? I've got 9 of 11 for the achievement, but (god help me) I forget what to press to initiate them.

Is anyone else finding hardcore difficulty a bit too easy? Not that I'm complaining but it seems like the AI allies are really overpowered and do a lot of the hard work for you.

I believe it's Y. If you're using the alternate control scheme it's right stick click.

Crusher, I thought so too, but when I press "Y" it turns the dude over and pummels their face in with punches.

I'll double check to see if I changed the control scheme by accident. I think I'm on default though.

Well having 3 AI allies instead of 1 really helps out, makes you less of a target too. I'm only playing on Normal, but that's nice to know about later difficulties being a little easier because of it.

This may be a dumb question, but can you customize the appearance of your character in multiplayer?

Well you can pick which character you want to use on either side. If you mean things like adding bits of armor or whatever then no. There are multiple versions of some characters though.

It's important to note that (Once you unlock all the weapon specific executions) the only way to do the team specific extended beatdown (locust arm rip or cog face punch) is by equipping a grenade or the snub pistol. Those are the only weapons without their own execution.

Cold Sprunk posted:

Aside from picking a specific skin (i. e. Marcus or Gears 1&2 Marcus), no. No interchangeable hats or armor doohickies.

I apologize if this has been asked recently but this thread moves pretty quick now. I have a financially destitute friend who's going to be getting this for a short while off Gamefly- does the co-op campaign on Live require the online multiplayer pass? Or is the pass deal just for if you want to kill each other?

Nope. The season pass is simply a preorder discount for DLC that will come out in the future. The retail game disc is complete and has everything, none of those Cerberus Network shenanigans.

Yeah thank god this game doesn't have any of that multiplayer pass stuff. Just lots and lots of micros transaction stuff that someone renting the game will never have to worry about.

Yeah I was a bit, 'aww, WHAT?' at the preorder exclusives considering that I preordered at GameStop. While the commando Dom looks like the least of them all, the irony here is that Dom is my favorite Gears plot character.

In today's Penny Arcade news post, Gears of War 3 got some surprising praise from Tycho, mostly regarding the characterization. I know a lot of goons dislike the PA dudes for whatever reason, but here it is for those interested:

Tycho from PA posted:

You should know that the game’s lead writer, Karen Traviss, loves The “Cole Train” - whose full name is Augustus Cole, and who in conversations with me she has referred to simply as Augustus. I knew this anyway, but another way you can tell is that she gives him the best line in the entire game. I mean, far and away the best line. She also gave us Bernadette Mataki and Samantha Byrne - she’s done her unstoppable thing, which is to ask real questions of these impossible spaces, and then answer them with a narrative. That’s her in a nutshell. There’s a reason why she keeps getting these jobs: she has a tremendous heart for the soldier, and telling their stories is a kind of overriding personal mission.

Cole? The best line in the game? poo poo, man. This is a Gears title, so I'm not expecting anything truly groundbreaking with regard to the story, but you guys know how much of a pedant Tycho is, so that's some high praise (in my eyes, anyway).

Having read the novels, I'm really excited to Karin Travis' really excellent work brought into the game world.

She really is excellent in the books at bringing new, subtle depth to many of the Gears characters.

So I just beat the campaign. In my opinion, it definitely lives up to the hype. There's one section which I think most people will see as "the junker section", but it wasn't offensively bad, just stretched out a little. There were some great boss battles, and I think it finished really strong.

I started playing around 1:30 this afternoon, took a break for something to eat. I'd say around 8-9 hours on Normal.

Also I didn't get my "Complete the game on Normal" achievement, not sure if it's just me or if the achievement is glitched

I thought Gears 2 had a god drat awful story. Actually, I didn't really like Gears 2 in general, but after watching the Quick Look for Gears 3 and reading some opinions on it, I'm convinced this is a return to form (and possibly even an improvement over Gears 1, at least in multiplayer and story).

My biggest gripe about Gears 2's story has always been the terrible ending. RAAM was a loving awesome final boss. The Lambet Brumack was awful.

I didn't really hate Gears 1's story, but I really wish they would've went all-out with it. I think ending the game on a train ride was sort of a misstep. I remember being so hyped for the game and its rich world, the "destroyed beauty," seeing ages-old conflict and discovering the stories behind characters, and the universe has it, but the game didn't do a very good job of presenting it.

Yes, Gears 1 was me overhyping it to myself.
