Gears of War 3 is Epic Game's biggest new project exclusively for the Xbox 360. Their intentions this time around are clear; to push the 360 to its graphical limits, to deliver a bigger cooperative campaign experience, and to provide a multiplayer to make up for their admittedly sloppy iteration in Gears of War 2 by going leaps and bounds above player expectation. The game has been delayed from its initial April 2011 release to be closer to the Holidays, probably because Microsoft is a fan of money. The good news is, this allows time for a multiplayer beta and tweaks to be made prior to the game's release, hopefully avoiding Gears of War 2's incredibly lovely start.

QUICK INFO FOR THE BUSY/IMPATIENT READER:
  • Dedicated servers are confirmed for competitive multiplayer modes.
  • Said dedicated servers will have backup host migration in the event servers suffer from a hiccup or downtime. Peer2Peer Matchmaking will still be available for anyone out of server range or during server downtime.
  • A multiplayer beta is confirmed for early 2011
  • Horde mode returns along with Beast Mode, a class-based version of horde mode where you play as the locust and creatures who fight against AI human forces.
  • Campaign is up to 4 player co-op.
  • The XP system is vastly fleshed out, as well as unique weapon and character skins earned through levels.

>>>Here is a quick and easy timeline that will explain the events before, during, and after Gears of War 1 and 2<<<

Story overview
  • The game's story will be written by Karen Traviss, the author of the Gears of War novels.
  • The setting is 18 months after the events in Gears of War 2.
  • Imulsion, the world's fuel source, has essentially taken control of the world and any locust or creature sorry enough to be affected by its infectious nature.
  • The lambent are the dominant force, having similar advantages to the Locust's "E-holes" by popping up out of stalks in the ground.
  • Queen Myrrah and her locust horde are still surviving, but many locust are becoming feral and berserk, possibly from being forced to inhabit the surface.
  • Everyone is on their own, the world has gone to poo poo, the COG (Coalition of Organized Governments) has disbanded, and humans and locust alike are struggling to survive.
  • The game's opening setting takes place on Raven's Nest a group of tankers and warships strung together and built into a floating stronghold/home for Marcus and crew.

Gameplay
The entire campaign is up to 4 player co-op (But still only 2 player split screen). Multiple times throughout the game you will change characters as the story arcs between Marcus and Dom, and Cole and Baird. The campaign is said to be longer than GoW2 by far. You also gain experience just by playing the campaign and with mutators (think skulls in Halo) you can change the way the game is played and either up the difficulty or add some fun. Example of some mutators in game:

-Headless chicken: Beheaded enemies run around and attack their allies for a short time before dying.
-Scavenger: Only ammo available is what enemies drop
-Actives only: Each reload is limited to only the small active window
-Laugh tack: A laugh track is played throughout gameplay.

You can add goon's gamertags for specific game types based on their preference. Post your GT and the spot you'd prefer to be under and I'll add it to the list:

If you're eager to add a metatag then a goon has made one just for you:

Kali11324 posted:

I just created a Meta, GoonsOfWar3 password is ilikegoons

Or if you're interested in JUST Horde, you can add the meta: HordeOfGoons

This game runs on dedicated servers for ranked competitive multiplayer modes
Campaign, horde, beast, public, and private games still run on host-based connections, but host migration is available.

Ribbons and Medals

Ribbons are bonuses for completing small tasks during gameplay and are not limited to competitive multiplayer. They range from obvious awards like 2 quick kills in a row, or a 5 kill killing spree, or drawing first blood, to the strange and extreme, like leaving a match with the most headshot deaths or grenade tagging an opponent charging with the Retro lancer. There's nearly 100 unique ribbons in the game.

Medals are long-term achievements that unlock specific titles that appear next to your name in multiplayer. Most medals have 4 tiers of unlocks and titles and are usually based on how much you kill with a weapon or complete a specific objective in a match. If you plan on getting Seriously 3.0, you will have to get an onyx medal, the highest tier, for every single medal.

Executions

Every single weapon has a unique execution this time around and you will need kills with that weapon to unlock them. Performing a lengthy execution also nets you bonus XP. Some executions can last nearly 10 seconds, forcing your opponent to watch the entire time before they can respawn.

Event Calendar

There will be a calendar showing upcoming events tweaked in multiplayer modes. XP events, Horde changes, and unique multiplayer game types will be created regularly. As an example shown above, Easter Holiday had everyone wearing bunny masks. Also included was a special game mode "Torque Bow Tag", all pickups were torque bows.

Competitive Multiplayer
  • Team Deathmatch: Two teams of 5 face off in an attempt to deplete the other team's respawns. Each team shares 15 respawns; they are not divided per player and can potentially be eaten up by a single player who dies constantly. Once all spawns are depleted, you must kill the last remaining players to win a round. 2 rounds to win a match.
  • Capture the Leader: 1 player on each team is designated the leader (Chairman Prescott for COG, Queen Myrrah for Locust) and must be downed and taken as a meatshield. If a player can hold the leader successfully for 30 seconds, they win the round. If a leader is dropped, the timer resets. Leaders get a few special perks; They cannot be killed. Explosions and instant kill weapons will only down them. In addition, they can use tac-com (Left bumper) to see allies AND enemies through walls. This makes the leader an integral part of strategy when flanking or defending. Infinite respawns, first team to 2 captures wins.
  • King of the Hill: Objective rings pop up one at a time throughout the map. Each ring has points that slowly deplete every second. A team that stays in the ring long enough will capture that ring and all points that deplete while captured go toward their total score. Captured rings can be left and do not require a player to stay in it, but if an enemy enters they will break the ring and begin capturing it for themselves. Infinite respawns, first team to earn a total of 170 points wins the round.
  • Wingman: 4 teams of two face off in a small team-based free for all. Each player only gets one life per round. Points are earned in 2 ways; 1 point for killing an enemy, and 1 point for being the last team alive. Map-based weapon spawns are delayed by 30 seconds from the start of a round due to the scattered spawns, preventing weapon advantage. first team to the required score total at the end of the round wins (you can reach the score goal first, but if another team gets higher than the goal total by the end of the same round, they win).
  • Execution: Execution is up close and very personal. Each team's player has only 1 life per round and must be killed with either an instant kill (explosive, gib, headshot) or be downed and then executed up close. Shooting a downed enemy from a distance will result in a buzz and do no damage. Downed players will get up on their own.
  • Warzone: Similar to execution, but enemies can be killed from a distance even when downed. Downed players will die if they are not revived. 1 life per player per round.

  • Social Matches: Unranked social matches of each game mode will also be present, replacing empty character slots with bots until more people join in. This allows you to join a game already in progress, without the need to wait for a maximum of 10 players.

Respawning game types are a fusion of warzone and execution rules; You can shoot and kill a player from a distance, but that player can also self revive themselves without bleeding out.

Cooperative Multiplayer
  • Beast Mode: Easily described as "reverse Horde", but nothing like it at the same time. You play as a number of different Locust and beasts, ranging from the suicidal ticker, to a mace wielding mauler, all the way up to a near invincible berserker, fighting against AI human characters. Players in this mode have infinite respawns, provided you have the tokens to afford your beast. Tokens are earned with more points and kills, and stronger classes will require you to spend more tokens. As the waves progress, newer and stronger beast classes will be available, such as the dual-boltok-wielding armored kantus, or the lightning fast serapede, a gigantic centipede like creature with an electrical melee.
  • Horde Mode: Horde is back with tower defense elements twisted in. Each point your gain from killing enemies goes towards your cash total. You can use cash in between horde rounds to build movement hindering barriers, large turrets, makeshift decoys, and buy weapons and ammo. Every 10th wave is a boss wave, consisting of berserkers and brumaks. Waves also no longer have a rhythm to them; anything can spawn on any wave.
  • Arcade Mode: Once you have completed the campaign, you can play it again in arcade mode for points and try to beat your friend's scores with objectives popping up as you progress to add incentive. Mutators can be activated to increase fun, because who doesn't want to see Cole in DK mode?

And a catalog of purchasable skins can be found Here: http://epicgames.com/community/gear...3-weapon-skins/

New Weapons
  • Retro Lancer: The old model of the Lancer, used pre Emergence Day in the Pendulum Wars. Has the highest damage output of all three rifles but has the worst accuracy and highest recoil as well. Shooting from the hip is near impossible to control effectively. The gun has a standard melee but can also charge at running speed with the bayonet extended by holding B. When you start to scream during the run, the momentum is powerful enough to impale and kill anyone you run into.
  • Sawed-Off Shotgun: A powerhouse or a paperweight, depending on how you use it. Get within arm's distance of 1, 2, even 3 enemies and let the wide spread kill them all in one hit. Any further than that, and your bullets won't even touch them. It's got 1 shot per reload, and a very lengthy reload timer. The sawed off will not down a player at full health, it will either kill or damage them.
  • Digger Launcher: Think of it like a boomshot that can fire bullets underground. A piranha-like creature is fired from the gun to dig to a point, then emerge in the air and explode. This allows it to go underneath cover and flush enemies out. Fire it directly at someone and watch their chest get eaten in seconds before blowing up inside them.
  • One Shot: A heavy weapon like the mulcher and mortar, it does as its name implies and kills anything in one shot, regardless if it has a meatshield or boomshield. It has a targeting laser with a distinct beep, alerting enemies of the danger. It requires a good second or two of aiming before it can be fired.
  • Incendiary Grenade: A low-tech molotov style grenade. It has no timed detonation and will explode the moment it meets a solid contact. It sets an area on fire for a period, dealing damage over time. It has a small radius instant kill zone at the point of impact when it detonates making for quick kills with little telegraphed presence.
  • Retro Turret: A makeshift turret with 4 retro lancers strapped to it. Provides relentless firepower without the inaccuracy of a normal retro lancer. These are only map-based and horde-based.

Returning Weapons
  • Lancer: Trusty as always. The Lancer features the highest RPM and stopping power to balance its weaker damage output. Its signature chainsaw can be activated with B and, once full revved, will chainsaw anyone you walk up to for an instant kill. You can be shot out of the initial revving of the saw, but once fully revved you will not lower your saw due to damage.
  • Hammerburst: The Locust standard in assault rifles. The gun is semi-automatic and has very accurate shots with low recoil and medium damage. Clicking the right stick while aiming zooms in to the gun's iron sights, a hammerburst specific feature, giving you extreme range on your shots.
  • Gnasher shotgun: A powerful shotgun with very high damage output in close quarters. Carefully aimed shots at mid range can deal considerable damage, but point-blank shots will deliver a juicy and satisfying instant kill.
  • Gorgon SMG: Formerly known as just the gorgon, it has evolved from a burst fire pistol into a fully automatic one. It works nearly like a miniature lancer and can be fairly deadly when paired with a boomshield or meatshield.
  • Boltok: A six-shooter revolver with high accuracy and damage. The gun is capable of head popping headshots and is extremely deadly in the right hands.
  • Boomshot: A large grenade launcher wielded by the locust Boomers. Fires very powerful rocket propelled explosives that slowly arc over a long distance. Most effective when aimed at the enemy's feet.
  • Torque Bow: A very powerful crossbow with explosive tipped arrows. Holding RT will charge an arrow and bring up a directional laser showing the arrows trajectory. After a short charge, the arrow will be able to fly straight and stick into enemies, exploding them for an instant kill. If shot in the head, the arrow will continue through the body and stick where it lands, leaving potential for multiple kills.
  • Longshot: A long range sniper rifle. It fires accurate shots aimed either over the shoulder or down the scope. Moving dramatically decreases accuracy. Best used as a support weapon, as it does extremely high damage and will take very few shots afterwards on a full health player to down them. Headshots from any range are an instant kill and are the main highlight of the weapon. Must be reloaded after every shot.
  • Mulcher: A heavy rail gun that cannot be picked up and stored. It's an extremely high damage and fire rate without the need to reload. It is a cumbersome yet portable machine gun turret that can quickly down enemies or even gib them if they are mid range or closer. Continuous fire overheats the gun, which can be cooled by pressing RB.
  • Mortar: Another heavy support weapon. Press LT to plant it on the ground and hold RT to begin setting its trajectory. The longer RT is held, the farther the shots will go. After screaming into the air, the shot splits into multiple instant kill and high damage explosives that extend in a straight line toward the direction you fired. Extremely good for objective control, but you are extremely immobile and helpless during and after the shot. You can also fire it unplanted, letting loose an unpredictable and dangerous explosive ball.
  • Hammer of Dawn: A targeting laser gun that requires open air to be used. Once a section of ground has been targeted for a few seconds, a satellite laser beam shoots from the sky, dealing large area damage on impact. The beam can be guided very slowly across the ground while aiming, but only deals direct damage after it has touched ground.
  • Ink Grenade: Like the incendiary grenade, the ink will detonate on contact, leaving opponents no warning beep or time to flee when one is thrown. The ink corrodes an area with toxic fumes doing damage over time. Any enemy near the detonation will cringe and grab their heads, immobilizing them in the toxic fumes. This is especially deadly when combined with team fire.
  • Frag Grenade: A powerful explosive grenade. Once it has remained stationary after a throw, it will beep and detonate in a wide area, killing anything inside its blast and heavily damaging anything just outside.
  • Smoke Grenade: A happy balance has been made to make the smokes useful without being mind numbingly broken or irritating. Players caught in a smoke explosion will grab their head, preventing them from shooting for a couple seconds, but allows them to retain movement to escape danger. It will also cause you to drop meatshields and heavy weapons if it goes off next to you. The smoke cloud is also a bit thicker and lasts longer than Gears of War 2's. Lastly, anyone unfortunate enough to get tagged by a smoke grenade will go down as if they sustained critical damage.

By the way, the story for the 3rd game is being written by Karen Traviss, the author of the Gears of War book series. Makes sense. The story promises to flesh out more background with Marcus and his father, and even background story on good old Cole Train.

Mark Rein from Epic talks a bit about Unreal Engine 3 and Gears 3, saying they really plan to use their extra time to make a better multiplayer. Hopefully this thread will be more bustling by the time Reach beta dies down and E3 hits.

What?

You know what would be awesome? If Epic would just quit it with the artsy-pretentiousness and admit that Gears of War is just a big hyper-macho action movie. I would like GoW and CliffyB a lot more if they did that.

You mean the entire game series, right?

But if you actually read the novels, it's a very interesting universe. Especially for the fact that Sera's history is almost revolved around war except for two periods: the short peace between E-Day and the end of the Pendulum Wars, and the Era of Silence.

Now, I have not read the novels, but I heard they are a good read if you want to understand the backstory of the games.

A lot of stuff has leaked about this game. Cliffy B is attempting damage control by saying "Don't trust leaks" but when they have ingame screenshots it's hard to question them. It's all from a Russian magazine with sites having translated the article (it's multiple pages) to get all the info from it. Various things that may/may not be true:

-There's a mech you can pilot (Silver Back). It's fully armoured from the front but exposed from behind and carries a machine gun (infinite ammo) and grenade launcher (limited ammo).

-Story: Humanity is splintered into tribes and Marcus' homebase with the others is on an aircraft carrier (Raven's Nest) which you have to defend from attack at points in the game. Marcus' father apparently is still alive and has a way to save humanity

-There are three types of grenades (smoke/frag/ignitable) that can be combined. For example frag+ignitable will roast a closed environment.

-The Lambent are able to battle two-to-three Gears at the same time and once they're close to death they'll charge and explode on the nearest human.

-New weapon: Grenade launcher that fires organic bombs under the ground to bypass cover.

-Almost every gun will have its own unique execution move, from throat-slashing bayonet kills with the Pendulum Lancer, to a neck-breaking shotgun move, head-squishing mortar smack and a flame thrower manoeuvre that sets people on fire from the inside.

-With the meatshield you can now shove a grenade inside a captive Locust's armour and kick him towards a crowd of baddies.

-Multiplayer environments now constantly shift and crumble during battles.

-Players can now swap ammo and weapons with each other.

I hope all of that is goddamn true.

Holy poo poo. Not suprisingly, that combined grenade idea is extremely similar to one of the ideas that has been passed around in the official Gears forums about igniting an ink cloud with the flame thrower.

Though that one screen scan of an Anya-like character is actually a concept art for her design. That picture has been around for a while, I hope they aren't trying to pass it off as new characters or designs.

True enough, at least:

Anything that Cliff "debunks" is more just clarification on the facts. Chances are all those concept pictures came straight from Epic and at least a handful of that info, if not all of it, is true. Neat.

Edit: I love how the box in the magazine scan pointing to the Raven's Nest picture has "Don't mess with my tomatoes!" sprinkled amidst the Russian. What the hell.

This woman is a terrible author and I really don't want to play this now, despite owning and loving the hell out of GoW 1 and 2.

Calm down, man. Just wait and see what happens. It's Gears of War anyway, it's not like the story has to mean a great deal.

Yodzilla posted:

I sure hope adversarial multiplayer is fun in this one because boy howdy did Gears 2 suck in that regard. Co-op was fantastic though.

I've not played either game in co-op, and prefer it that way really. While I'll give four player co-op a go, it's really a single player game for me.

Well think of it this way, it's not like the Gears story could get any worse is it?

This is info from the Game Informer article apparently, confirming a new mode called "Arcade Mode" that lets you replay campaign with friends with points in mind.

"It is a way that the players can compete against each other in campaign mode. It adds points and stat tracking features, encouraging a competitive and challenging replay of the campaign. Onscreen indicators clearly highlight fellow players with over-the-head carrots to help them navigate. Objectives and other highlighted objects are clearly marked at all times, sacrificing the normally lean presentation for quick directions and a clear sense of purpose."

Arcade mode also has mutators -

"Mutators also become part of the game in arcade mode, allowing for dramatic and sometimes humorous gameplay in arcade mode. One of our big goals is to add re playability of the content. Mixing up the gameplay simply by changing the rules through mutators are a way to do that, whether you change gravity, the sizes of the heads, sound effects, or whatever else you want to play. As you play through arcade mode, pop-ups appear on you screen showing you accomplishments that your friends have managed and daring you to beat them - a feature lifted from EPIC's shadow Complex."

Also, there is apparently going to be a multiplayer level called "Thrashball", which will be designed after a field Cole has played in. Rumor has it there is a scoreboard in the middle of the map that can come crashing down.

Updated the OP with new info on weapons, characters, and storyline with news from the GI article (That I haven't really gotten yet). I'm not putting anything spoiler worthy in the OP, if you wanna see into the story that badly it's not too hard to find.

The GameInformer Hub will be constantly updating new bits of info as the month goes on. One supposed to be out today but it's taking a long time.

Edit: it's up and wow, as someone who never read any of the books, this quick read gets you practically 100% up to speed on the story before, during and after Gears 1 and 2, up to the beginning of 3.

Little heads up for anyone still playing Gears 2, the 6th title update is coming and a list with all its features is going to be announced early next week. This update has been in the works since late 2009 and according to Rod Fergusson it's got "lots of good stuff inside. Besides TU3 where we added the level system, this is our biggest TU yet." He also goes on to say they fixed the bug that reset's people's rank and drops them to level 1.

Pointing out what is probably the most obvious change, my guess is they are adding an option for player matches. Reason being, if you see any friends playing Gears 2 now, it says "Playing in a Ranked Match" as opposed to "Public match", like it has since launch. We'll see in the next few days though.

Here's a friendly reminder of how glitch infested Gears 2 used to be and how I'm so glad that none of these are left in the game (But a handful of less exploitable/harmful glitches still are).

Any word on when they'll fix the stun bugs? They've been there since launch and Epic hasn't done squat to fix them.

Stun in what way? You mean what most people refer to as the "sticky walk" where when you do certain actions and try to move away you jitter in place for a few seconds? That's something they claimed to fix in past updates and while it isn't as bad, it's still persistent.

The only 2 bugs I still see on a regular basis are when you down someone and everyone sees them as standing up while the player is permanently DBNO. You need an explosion or close range shotgun to kill them. The other being when you kill an enemy there's an extremely rare chance that enemy will magically kill you by taking you as a meatshield, resulting in your body standing straight up despite being dead.

This game looks fun. I hope the servers are not plagued with internet aids.

That also, but I mean the stun bug whereby you are stunned and do the animation for it and then get locked into a loop even though there is nothing stunning you. Happens to me frequently and near enough every single game I play. It's quite frustrating since my character will do the stagger/stun animation and then if I hit the fire button I stagger again, then again and again and again. It's been in the game since it launched and it's just baffling that they haven't fixed it yet.

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. Like, the chainsaw stagger? Or the stun from being punched? What causes it?

Err yeah the best I can relate that to is the chainsaw stagger like Ah Pook said. If you get hit while chainsawing and keep holding B you continuously stagger for like 3 seconds, but thats intended. maybe SOMETIMES in a really laggy match I will get melee'd and the stun from the melee will look like I stagger twice, but in a match that laggy it doesn't really matter anyway.

The only thing that can "stun" you in this game anymore is a near miss from a hip fired mortar. Smoke nades don't stun and I know there used to be a glitch where you'd be permanently stunned, but all those are so old news but now.

I'll probably kick myself for saying this, but I love the Gears of War setting/most of the story to death. It's all grotesque and hosed up, and at the same time has that best buds forever thing going on. It won't win any Pulitzers or anything, but it's better than most people give it credit for.

Kinda, it's where you get stunned with the chainsaw but then you get stuck repeating that stun animation over and over and over again. Like you release the B button then push something and it repeats it all over again, and keeps on doing it. That 3 second stagger basically being looped every time you push a button. This happens regardless of whether it's a laggy game or not as well, I mean there's nothing you can really do now except just laugh at how ridiculous it is but it baffles me how something like that has been in the game for such a long time now.

On the note of chainsaws however, I also hate that bug where pushing B makes your Lancer fire instead of revving the chainsaw. I'd love to know what makes that happen

Hey!

Tell me if I'm gonna have connectivity issues with this new game, like I've had with the old ones!

I'd be with in the trenches duking it out with yall a lot more often, and a lot more seriously, if it weren't for all the lag.

I dunno, this literally has never happened to me. Easy fix for that problem is use the hammerburst, an obviously superior weapon anyway.

I'd be happy to play with you more often if you didn't chat to your roommates during every game and go AFK or drop out all the time, especially when you're host. You were good at Gears 2, too. Mack misses you.

Listen man, if you can't understand my complex strategy...

No, seriously, if you've ever wondered why I do that stuff, its cause of the lag, (and I'm a dick) but mostly, because of the lag. I play MW2 and I hardly have any lag at all, so I know it can be done. Anyway, I'll quit bitchin' about the multiplayer and instead I'll pose a question: Care to guess how will Carmine be killed in this installment?
