I wouldn't say it was just a coincidence. The network model repeats itself throughout nature.

From some of the earliest forms of life on the planet, the creation and expansion of cities, to the connection of neurons in our brain leading to the inevitable creation and success of the internet, and more recently the proposed model of our universe.

It's pretty short sighted to call it a coincidence.
