I said come in! posted:I don't understand how the blu-ray doesn't look better then the Canal+ H.264 screen shot. At least to me, I see a lot more detail in the blu-ray. Remember, mousing over is the blu-ray. The blu-ray is slicker (and in the right aspect ratio), but they blew out a lot of texture. Look at the close-up up his face in screenshot 5 - in the Canal+ one you can see eyelashes and pores and stuff. When they minimized the grain on the blu-ray, all that disappeared. He's a waxy-faced weirdo. The Canal+ version isn't amazing, but it's a much warmer, less processed image.

I don't think it's artifacts on his face in 5. I can't really tell either way from any of the other pictures, but the close-up really favors Canal+, I think.

Neither impress me or upset me much, but his face looks weird as poo poo in the blu-ray. It's not Predator-bad, but it's not a good thing they did to it.

Peaceful Anarchy posted:5 is the one with Biff in poo poo right? I don't see the pores you refer to, but if you look at his teeth and lips, especially on the left side the artifacting seems pretty clear to me. Same thing on Fox's face in 7, look where his face meets his jacket. It's clearer when you look in darker areas as that's where everything turns blotchy in the HD stram caps. Is 5 Biff in poo poo? I was talking about the one where he's looking at his disappearing hand.

Aliens doesn't matter that much, but Alien is a big gently caress difference, if only for the Dallas scene, which is great in concept but has probably the worst effects in the film and just feels flat.

Aliens is even better than the screenshots suggested. I've never seen it look anywhere near this good -all the problems it had with murkiness are totally gone, and there's no DNR waxiness. If anything, it looks even more textured than before.

I feel like with every new generation of media, I'm reintroduced to Aliens. I first saw it on a beat-up old VHS where I could barely make anything out, then a slightly less beat-up VHS of the special edition which blew me away at how much story I was missing, then a nice DVD where I saw it in widescreen and was amazed at all the background detail, then the restored DVD from like '06 where it was as good as I ever imagined it getting, then this loving Blu-Ray where I didn't even want to blink while it was going on. For the next generation of media, I fully expect it to do my laundry and suck my dick.

In genreal it behooves you to see the theatrical Alien and Aliens first, and workprint Alien 3. Aliens director's cut is really cool but the pacing is problematic, and Alien director's cut is whatever. Alien 3, however, really needs to be looked as an incomplete movie like Mr. Arkadin, and the workprint is the closest we'll get to what it would've been.

It's grim as gently caress and it's got Klaus Kinski blowtorching a guy's dick off. Also, I've never seen Deodato's contribution to the genre but it has one of the best posters I've ever seen.

The cave paintings are just incredible in how they bend and wrap around the cave walls. I liked the film so much I saw it again at a cheap theater in normal non-3D and definitely felt it lost some of the effect. The best part is the shimmer of the crystals.
